96 pp, 9 3/4" H, soft cover. ISBN 1855328348 Profusely illustrated in colour and b&w with photographs, reproductions, maps/battle plans. " 'If there is no objection, I will take my Division tomorrow and go to Gettysburg.' With these words Major- General Henry Heth set in train the course of events culminating in the titanic clash around the small Pennsylvania town of Gettysburg. On 1 July two Confederate Corps swept towards this strategic crossroads as Federal troops fought a desper a t e d e l aying action. The men of the Army of Northern Virginia were the best in the Confederacy. Under Robert E. Lee they had whipped every Federal force sent against them, and they were confident this time would be no exception. As the firs t at ta c ks s we pt forward full of confidence they were met by a storm of fire. Judging from the determination of their bluecoated adversaries this was going to be no ordinary fight." "(This series) presents the military enthusiast with a new a ng le on th e m ajo r b attlefields of history. Supported by comprehensive organisation diagrams the forces involved are examined unit-by-unit, including the 'tooth' combat elements and the vital 'tail' support troops. The objectives of the operat ion ar e a nal ysed and thi s 'theory' contrasted with the realities of the battle itself." 4 Brimelow, Peter. THE PATRIOT GAME: NATIONAL DREAMS & POLITICAL REALITIES.
Toronto Key Porter 1986 1550130013 / 9781550130010 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
310 pp, 9 1/2" H. "(A)rgues that Canada ought to be a second Switzerland, with a living standard actually higher than that of the U.S. But in fact it is embroiled in a tangle of regional and linguistic quarrels, mainipulated by both the Liberals and their Mulroney Tory imitators, and an elite in Ottawa that truly represents neither Anglophones nor Francophones. 'The Patriot Games' offers an unconventional view of Canada that will shatter many myths. Brimelow endorses the argument of Goldwin Smith's 1891 classic 'Canada and the Canadian Question' that our country is 'rich by nature, poor by policy'. He demonstrates that this is a direct consequence of fatally-flawed political institutions, which have created divisive polices like bilingualism and Canadian Nationalism. He shows that, paradoxically, English Canada is the dispossessed and colonized nation within a weakening Confederation. In a provocative portrait of the Trudeau era, he describes how the Liberals imposed an artificial bilingualism policy on an unsuspecting country, alienating the West and having little effect in Quebec. (This book) challenges us to come to terms with what being a Canadian means." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. "The fall of Khartoum and the death of General Gordon at the hand of the Mahdi's army constituted one of the most colourful and controversial episodes of Britain's military history - a seemingly unfeeling Imperial government had 'let down' one of the nation's heroes. Here, Donald Featherstone, well known for his many books on military subjects and wargaming in particular, focuses especially on the battles fought by the relief columns." "The Osprey Campaign Series presents concise, authoritative accounts of the great conflicts of history. Each volume begins with an assessment of each commander's campaign stragegy, then recounts the progress of the fighting, blow-by-blow. More than 90 illustrations, including maps, charts and colour plates accompany the text, and a series of three-dimensional battle maps mark the critical stages of the campaign. Each volume concludes with a brief guide to the battlefield today, and detailed notes for wargamers." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. 8 Fenton, R.S. MERSEY ROVERS: THE COASTAL TRAMP SHIP OWNERS OF LIVERPOOL AND THE MERSEY.
Gravesend, Kent World Ship Society 1997 0905617843 / 9780905617848 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
344 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, b&w profiles on endpapers, colour reproductions of flags & funnels. "In 'Mersey Rovers' will be found many of the owners of bulk-carrying steam and motor coasters which were primarily engaged in, for want of a better word, the tramp trades. All began their shipowning careers at Liverpool or another Mersey port; several migrating from Wales to do this, others succumbing to the lure of Liverpool after a successful start at a minor port on the Mersey. Several important Liverpool owners covered in past or planned World Ship Society publications have been omitted, including the Coe, Kennaugh, Monks and Monroe families. Also left out are owners of craft engaged largely in regular liner services and in river and estuarial trades. As the inclusions and exclusions are likely to become confusing, all the local coastal shipowners of significance have been listed in the Miscellany section. The emphasis in this book is on steam and motor coasters and, for reasons explained in 'Cambrian Coasters', sailing ships will not be found in the fleet lists, although some are referred to in the histories. (I) have attempted to examine common strands in the histories of Mersey coasters and their owners and the Introductory Survey aims to place the ports, trades, owners and ships of the river in an historical and geographical context. Writing this, I have tried to answer the question, 'Why did the Mersey become such a centre for coastal shipowning?'." From the Foreword. Light waviness to edges of text block, book is lightly cocked, slight wrinkle at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, some light wrinkling at top edge.

10 Gough, Barry M., editor. THE JOURNAL OF ALEXANDER HENRY THE YOUNGER, 1799-1814. VOLUME II - THE SASKATCHEWAN AND COLUMBIA RIVERS.
Toronto The Champlain Society 1992 0969342519 / 9780969342519 Limited Edition Hard Cover Near Fine
Volume II only. Pagination runs 329 - 781 pp, large 8vo (9 5/8" H). Orange/red cloth with gilt lettering/crest on spine, top edge gilt. No. 0531 of an edition of twelve hundred and fifty. "This second volume of the Journal of the North West Company fur trader Alexander Henry the Younger portrays Henry against the larger panorama of the North American fur trade. We find him in the first entry, that for 8 August 1808, taking his leave from the Pembina post in the Red River Valley. He is destined for the Saskatchewan country and a different departmental assignment from that he previously had. We trace his route upstream along the waterways of the Saskatchewan River system, and we follow him into the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in what is now southwestern Alberta. In the course of these trading activities that cover the years 1808 through 1813, Henry meets the surveyor and discoverer David Thompson, and on occasion the latter features heavily in the narrative. During these years on the prairies and plains of western North America Henry writes extensive commentary on various native peoples. The last phase of the Journal, comprising the years 1813 and 1814, brings Henry into the watershed of the Columbia River and the Pacific Coast.. The Nor'Westers were in a very insecure position owing to the threat of United States naval intervention during the War of 1812 and to the rivalry of John Jacob Astor's Pacific Fur Company. The tension of the narrative builds with these enlarge-ments to Henry's activities, and it ends in his accidental death." From the Editor's Note. Minor rub on fore-edge of text block otherwise clean and bright.

GUNS ACROSS THE RIVER: THE BATTLE OF THE WINDMILL, 1838., Graves, Donald E. Additional research by Arthur J. Robinson.
12 Graves, Donald E. Additional research by Arthur J. Robinson. GUNS ACROSS THE RIVER: THE BATTLE OF THE WINDMILL, 1838.
Prescott Friends of Windmill Point 2002 1896941214 / 9781896941219 Reprint with minor corrections. Soft Cover Very Good Christopher Johnson, maps - marine art by Peter Rindlisbacher..
263 pp, 8" H x 9" D. B&w photographs, maps, drawings. "In 1838, seeing political turbulence in Canada as an opportunity, members of a clandestine American organization, the Patriot Hunters, launched a series of attacks across the international border. The Hunters hoped to duplicate the success of the Texas rebellion two years before when their heroes Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie fought to establish a republic in northern Mexico. Destesting 'tyranny and oppression wherever manifested', they believed that all it would take was 'a good stand maintained for a short time' by Americans and then Canadians would do their own fighting to win freedom from the British yoke. The most ambitious Hunter attack was launched in November 1838 when a force of more than 500 armed men, commanded by a European soldier of fortune, set out from northern New York in a flotilla of chartered and hijacked vessels. Avoiding the naval and miitary forces of two nations, they occupied a stone windmill near Prescott, Ontario, confident that Canadians would rally to their standard. Their hopes were doomed. After five days of heavy fighting, British regulars and Canadian militia captured this 'Alamo of the North', and those invaders who survived were imprisoned in Fort Henry at Kingston and tried by court martial - eleven were executed and sixty deported to an Australian penal colony. (This book) tells the full story of this bloody but forgotten military action and the undeclared war of which it was a part. (It) traces the rise of the Patriot Hunters in the northern United States, describes their odyssey down the St. Lawrence and provide a detailed account of the five-day battle that followed. (P)acked with fascinating information about a colourful time in North American history and about the men who fought at the windmill - their personalities, tactics, weapons, uniforms, and even the songs they sang." A GREAT FLEET OF SHIPS: THE CANADIAN FORTS & PARKS., Heal, S.C.
15 Heal, S.C. A GREAT FLEET OF SHIPS: THE CANADIAN FORTS & PARKS.
Vanwell, St Catharines, Ontario, 1999, first edition.
312 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1551250233 B&w photographs, drawings, plus large fold-out plan: "General Arrangement Standard Steamer" in pocket at rear. "The era of the Canadian Forts and Parks has long since passed into history. While it lasted, it engaged a great deal of effort and capital on a scale never seen before in our country; from the men and women in the shipyards, to the crews who manned the ships, and the industrial leaders who transformed the s h i p y a r ds from very small-scale producers into world-scale shipbuilders for their day. By 1941 Canada's small shipbuilders had begun to turn out a fleet of 10,000- and 4,700-ton merchant ships which in every way were the equal of those from Br it is h an d Am erican shipyards. At the height of this great effort the Canadian yards were delivering one new ship every three days. Not only did we send to sea a large fleet of Park ships under the Canadian flag, manned by Canadian crews and ma nag ed by Ca na dia n managers, but we also bare-boat-chartered a similar size fleet of Fort sister ships for British management and operation. These Fort and Park ships were to be found in every theatre of war from 1942 on, at all times willi ng w orkh ors es of t he ocea ns, unheralded, unsung and later, like their crews, usually ignored by historians and government alike. While the postwar survivors of this fleet sailed under many flags, they did constitute an important element in reb uildi ng th e pe ace that fo llowe d. And now that Canada is no longer an owner of deep sea ships under the Canadian flag, it is timely that we remember our achievement of over fifty years ago. It was a unique undertaking that will never be repe ated i n a wo rld n ow s o diff eren t." M oderate bump at top of spine/rear hinge area. MOUNTAINS AND A MONASTERY., Holmes, Peter.
16 Holmes, Peter. MOUNTAINS AND A MONASTERY.
Geoffrey Bles, London, 1958, first edition.
191 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, 2 fold-out maps. "Spiti is a mountainous desert province, on the borders of Tibet, inhabited by a backward hill-folk whose way of life has not changed in a thousand years. It was there, in the village of Ranrik, that Peter Holmes, his wife Judy and their party met Shiring Dawa, the twelve-year-old boy who by his determination had escaped the fate of younger sons in Spiti - to be shut up in the Buddhist monastery at t h e a g e of eight and to remain there for the rest of their lives. The author was struck with Shiring's exceptional intelligence and his ability to grasp facts which were beyond the imagination of most of the villagers, and through him was able to l e ar n a g reat deal about village life and the influence exerted by the monastery. Spiti, however, was only one stage on their journey, and Peter Holmes goes on to describe some hair-raising adventures in the Himalayas. They succeeded in sc ali ng se ver al f or midable mountains not before attempted and Peter Holmes' photographic record of the expedition has provided many unusual illustrations for this delightful book about the Himalayas and the people who live in them." ADMIRALS IN COLLISION., Hough, Richard.
18 Hough, Richard. ADMIRALS IN COLLISION.
Hamish Hamilton, London, 1959, first edition.
174 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations. "On June 22nd, 1893, the British Mediterranean Fleet, the greatest naval fighting force and the most powerful weapon in the world, was on peacetime manoeuvres off Syria. The weather was fine, the sea calm, the eleven great ironclads were cruising in perfect formation at moderate speed. Then, at 3:31 p.m. the order was given from the flagship to bring the fleet, through a delicate and complex evolution, to its anchorage off Tripoli, barely three miles distant. The calamitous result of this signal was to strike horror throughout Europe and America, and to bring into disrepute the conduct, the principles of tactics and of discipline, and the fundamentals of w a r s h i p design, in the Royal Navy. The author has explored deeply into the causes of this strange and obscure catastrophe that created such outrage, but was never satisfactorily explained then, and ever since has been the subject of controv e rs y an d pr ej ud ice. The incident concerned two battleships, crack men-o'-war that were hardly safe even in peace; two admirals, strongly contrasting in temperament, intelligence and authority; and a series of fluttering flags that initiated t he ex tr aor di nar y e vol ution. Richard Hough believes that the answer to the enigma must lie in the characters of these admirals, Sir George Tryon, K.C.B., and Albert Hastings Markham; the one imperious, intimidating and self-confident; the ot her ear nes t an d w ell- inte ntio ned, but anxious and fretful. This account of their backgrounds and service careers, which sympathetically reveals their personalities (sometimes with pungent humour) makes a story which can be read as the dual biog raphi es o f men who appe ar as dest ined for explosive fusion. The events of that sultry summer afternoon....make fascinating reading for anyone interested in the sea,and in men's behaviour in crisis."
