1 Birrell, Andrew. BENJAMIN BALTZLY. PHOTOGRAPHS & JOURNALS OF AN EXPEDITION THROUGH BRITISH COLUMBIA: 1871.
Toronto Coach House Press 1978 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+ Benjamin Baltzly, photographer.
159 pp, oblong (9" H x 10 3/4" D). Illustrated with 71 of Baltzly's magnificent b&w photographs, plus a folded map (on thin tissue paper) - "Detail of map of British Columbia drawn by Joseph Trutch, 1871". "(B)rings together for the first time the photographs and journal of Benjamin Baltzly from his trip through British Columbia in 1871. Baltzly was a talented photographer working in the Montreal studio of William Notman. His trip to British Columbia was made with a party sent out by the Geological Survey of Canada to examine the geology along one of the proposed routes for the Canadian Pacific Railway - the North Thompson River through the Yellowhead Pass. Although a few of Baltzly's photographs have appeared in print, they have never been examined as a body. His journal, which appeared in 'The Gazette' of Montreal in 1872, is one of the very few written records left by Canadian photographers of the (19th) century. The photographs are probably the earliest taken of the rugged British Columbia interior." Two very small ink smudges on title page, tiny ink mark at bottom edge of rear pastedown. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, light wrinkle at bottom of spine and tiny tear at nottom of rear hinge.

THE LITTLE EMPEROR: GOVERNOR SIMPSON OF THE HUDSON'S BAY COMPANY., Galbraith, John S.
2 Galbraith, John S. THE LITTLE EMPEROR: GOVERNOR SIMPSON OF THE HUDSON'S BAY COMPANY.
Toronto Macmillan of Canada 1976 0770513891 / 9780770513894 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
232 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w illustrations, map. "For forty years the 'Little Emperor', Sir George Simpson, ruled a domain that stretched from Hudson Bay to the Pacific and the Arctic, wielding power a feudal king might have envied. An illegitimate child, raised by his father's family in Scotland, Simpson caught the eye of Andrew Colvile of the Hudson's Bay Company. Simpson was first sent to North America in 1820, that last year of uneasy rivalry before the North West and Hudson's Bay companies united. (He) rose rapidly in the Company's service; in an era of primitive communication he was given a great deal of latitude by his employers, and he quickly demonstrated that they could rely on his judgement. Ruthless and domineering in both public and private life, he made many enemies, but his undoubted business talents won wide admiration in Canada and in England. In his later years Simpson was increasingly involved in the business life of Canada, and by the time of his death in 1860, he was one of the leading financial figures in the colony."

4 Stech, V.V. Translated by Roberta Finlayson Samsour. BAROQUE SCULPTURE.
Spring Books, London, nd.
195 pp, large square 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour plates. "One of the most fascinating periods in European art history, the Baroque marks a triumphant break with the rules and restrictive for mulas of the Renaissance. Its genius was Bernini, whose sustained imaginative powers and incredible technical skill brought the Baroque style to its fullest maturity. In lesser hands, where the mastery of technique was not so assured and the cr e a t ive imagination not so well disciplined, the pitfalls are all too obvious. No style perhaps has ever captured the imagination quite so quickly; throughout Europe commissions poured in, wealthy landowners and rich merchants vying with each oth er t o express their ambitions and achievements in building, painting and sculpture, in itself an interesting sidelight on social history. The Czech lands were no exception, and the variety and high level of achievement in the contemporary Baroque st yle a re amply illustrated by the plates in this present volume. The accompanying text supplies a full documentation of Czech sculpture of the period and discusses in detail a number of important artists whose work deserves to be more widely k nown ." Boa rds are slightly faded at edges, small store label on front pastedown, minor edge wear. Dust jacket has a few small closed tears, light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, some minor soiling on front pane l, mi nor bro wning on flap edges, protected in mylar sleeve.
