3 Arner, Frederick B., commentary. (William H. Armstrong.) Foreword by Charles T. Joyce. RED-TAPE AND PIGEON-HOLE GENERALS: ANDREW A. HUMPHREYS IN THE ARMY OF THE POTOMAC.
Rockbridge, Charlottesville, Virginia, 1999, first edition.
378 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1883522153 B&w photographs, maps, reproductions. "Regarded as anonymously written fiction when it was originally published in 1864, this rollicking story of the way it was in the Union 's Army of the Potomac is a thinly disguised tale of truth. It is, in fact, a scathing attack on the character and military ability of Gen. Andrew Atkinson Humphreys. The author, Lt. Col. William H. Armstrong of the 129th Pennyslvania Voluntee r I n fantry, risked a libel action to send his message, yet he recognized that abuses within the system could not be addressed without first being exposed. The tale also includes a vivid, firsthand description of the brutal history of the 129th a nd th e Tyler Brigade and poignant stories of its men - Frederick B Arner's perceptive and comprehensive commentary identifies the main players and units and taps primary sources that support Armstrong's point of view - A masterpiece of historic sl eut h ing a nd disciplined research, this volume may change the way some historians view General Humphreys." Minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very minor rubbing on rear panel. Near Fine/Near Fine

Although a few of Baltzly's photographs have appeared in print, they have never been examined as a body. 177 pp, 11 1/4" H. "Saskatoon began as a vision of the Temperance Colonization Society. Its members formulated a scheme for a colony in the West where a way of life free from the evils of alcohol might be fostered. Early in the spring of 1882, an advance party travelled by rail and wagon to examine their grant of land and to choose the administrative site for the settlement. By the beginning of the twentieth century, the temperance ideals had become secondary to boosterism. By 1905 discussions were underway to amalgamate the original Nutana settlement with 'Saskatoon' and Riversdale on the west side of the river. Their combined population of 4,500 allowed Saskatoon a charter under city status in 1906. By 1908 the city was served by three railway companies and the 'Hub City' station was one of the busiest in the West. (This book) brings the story of the city to life through nearly 300 photographs. It registers changes through two world wars, during the periods of prosperity and recession, into the optimism of the fifties and sixties and the more speculative expansion of the seventies." Christmas gift inscription in ink on front free endpaper, book is lightly cocked, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor glue residue at top edge of rear endpapers. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear - mainly at top/bottom of spine ans flap-folds, light rubbing including faint scratches, 2" edge tear with old tape on inside, two tiny edge tears.

12 Douglas, W.A.B. THE CREATION OF A NATIONAL AIR FORCE. THE OFFICIAL HISTORY OF THE ROYAL CANADIAN AIR FORCE. VOLUME II (2 - TWO).
University of Toronto Press, Toronto, 1986.
797 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers. ISBN 0802025846 Profusely illustrated with photographs and maps (some fold-out). "From a small militia organization the Canadian air force had grown by 1945 into one of the country's three major autonomous military services. In this second volume of the RCAF's official history, covering the years from 1918 to 1945, W.A.B. Douglas chronicles the force's rapid growth and provides a vivid portrait of the Battle of the At lantic as it was fought from the eastern shores of Canada. Military necessity had brought Canada into the air age. In the peaceful 1920s, civil more than military concerns governed the shape, size, and functions of the RCAF; in the followi n g d e c a d e the rise of international tensions forced the service to concentrate on its military role. During the Second World War the RCAF grew from a few hundred airmen to a force of some eighty squadrons and nearly a quarter of a million pe op le . RC AF s qu adrons, wings, and groups took their place beside other Allied air forces in many theatres of the Second World War, and in the process acquired capabilities in virtually every phase of air warfare. The roots of the RCAF's growi ng rep ut a tio n i n o ver seas theatres, especially in the Northwest Europe campaign, were to be found at home. Responsible for the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan in Canada, the RCAF trained large numbers of other Commonwealth and Allied air men as we ll a s Ca nadi ans. Charged with the air defence of Canada, it built up a big Home War Establishment which fought on the Pacific Coast and also played a significant part in the defeat of enemy attempts to destroy Allied shipping, par ticu larl y i n t he Ba ttle of th e Atl antic. The latter was a crucial role, sustaining Great Britain and the Allied forces in Europe. Directed from headquarters at Halifax, aircraft of Eastern Air Command ranged from the St Lawrence River to mi d-oce an, u ltim atel y thwa rting Germa n U-bo ats that nearly severed the North Atlantic under British Command. Douglas's account is the first to give proper credit to the RCAF for the part it played in these operations. It also incorporates ne w info rmatio n on perso nalitie s, tec hnology , and i ntelligence." A heavy volume which may require extra postage. Hodder and Stoughton, London, 1980.
271 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 034024299X B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "(The author), in this long, close and hard look at one of the events which shaped the course of the war, cogently argues that if the ful l truth had been known at the time, the nation's exultation at its deliverance would have been greatly dimmed; and that the Dunkirk spirit, which helped to sustain the British people through five more hard years of war was to a considerable e x t e n t b ased on myth; necessary myth, which was eagerly embraced by a nation under the spell of Churchill's oratory. For while the soldiers, or most of them, displayed fortitude, there was deception and trickery, conflict and contradictory ord er s at t he po litical and high command level. It can be argued that in war it is sometimes necessary to deceive allies as well as enemies. The reader will be able to judge for himself the morality of actions taken by desperate men as catastrop he lo ome d e ver nea rer. Nicholas Harman scrutinises the Dunkirk affair at all its levels. He sees it through the eyes of Cabinet ministers and military commanders; from the naval angle and from the viewpoint of those who manned the 'little shi ps' ; a nd h e ha s re s earc hed a wealth of revealing anecdote about the confused, exhausted soldiers who made the long retreat to the port, and who, on arrival in Britain, were welcomed as if they had been conquerors."
