Toronto Champlain Society 1995 0969342543 / 9780969342540 Limited Edition Hard Cover Near Fine
cix, 463 pp, (xxiii), large 8vo (9 1/2" H), red cloth with gold lettering/banding/emblem on spine (no dust jacket - as issued). Top edge gilt. Limited edition of 1250 copies, this copy unnumbered. B&w illustrations, 3 maps (2 double-page). "This volume contains nearly complete transcriptions of the extant journals kept by John Franklin during his expedition to the unknown northern coast of the North American continent in the years 1819 to 1822. Only a few abstracts and tables of observations from the extant journal books have been excluded, and they, for the most part, are available in the appendices to Franklin's published 'Narrative of a Journey to the Shores of the Polar Sea in the Years 1819, 20, 21, and 22'. The present volume also includes transcriptions of a selection of correspondence written during the preparation for and execution of Franklin's first expedition. While most of the letters included here were written by Franklin, some were written by other correspondents to Franklin. A few highly selective pieces were neither written nor recieved by Franklin, but bear special relevance to letters that Franklin wrote. The Introduction provides short biographies of some of the men involved, and then establishes an historical context in which to situate the 1819-22 expedition. The sources of the various documents are next identified, followed by an attempt to understand what brought about the deaths of 11 out of 20 men under Franklin's leadership." Some minor wrinkling to fore-edge of some pages.

For three of the most critical decades of British naval history, Agamemnon was at the centre of events, fighting at the Battle of the Saintes, Copenhagen and, of course, Trafalgar. Later she served in the West Indies, participating in the Battle of Santo Domingo, and in South American waters until she was wrecked in 1809 in Maldonado Bay, off the coast of present-day Uruguay. 240 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w drawings, maps. "They watched and waited in nervewracking silence attack-ing only when stung. From treetops, from hostile beaches, from jungle camps, they saw it all and radioed what they saw - their network covering more than a half million square miles of island and ocean in the Japanese-held South Pacific. Hunted by enemy patrols, hounded by disease, starvation and sweltering heat, they risked torture and death from the heart of a Japanese-occupied tropical hell. Here are stories of incredible daring and brilliant leadership - of a hand-picked and highly unorthodox band of heroes who preferred the teeming jungle to the crowded regimentation of camp and office - told with gripping immediacy by the officer who led them. Follow the exploits of men like C.L. Page, the Australian planter whose reporting of the Japanese landing of Rabaul saved Allied lives, yet sealed his own fate - Lieutanant D.C. Horton, who hid 2,000 feet up on the mountainside overlooking the Japanese airfield at Munda and reported every aircraft that landed or took off - Blue Harris, a leader whose cool resourcefulness and legendary escapes were known throughout the islands." Dust jacket has minor edge wear, one tiny tear with old tape - two others archivally taped, very light browning to spine, light soiling and rubbing marks - mainly on rear panel, light remainder spray at bottom edge of flaps.

Weidenfeld and Nicolson, London, 1986, first edition.
410 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0297788957 Pictorial endpapers, b&w plates. "(C)harts Emma's life from her birth as the daughter of a Cheshire blacksmith to her death fifty years later in Calais in circumstances of poverty and neglect. (Fraser) deals in particular depth with the Italian period of Emma's life, when - as the wife of Sir William Hamilton, the affable, erudite British Minister at Naples - she became an intimate friend of the Queen of Naples and s at to all the portrait painters of Europe. The licentious climate of Naples provided an easy setting for Emma's famous romance with Lord Nelson: London Society's reaction to the affair is chronicled in fascinating detail. Flora Fraser sheds n e w l i ght on the shifting relationship between Emma, Nelson and Sir William at Paradise Merton, their home in Surrey, and explores Emma's later life - her strange, will-o'-the-wisp existence after the deaths of her husband and her lover. The a ut ho r h as h ad access to private manuscripts and illustrative material in England and Italy, and her extensive use of contemporary sources such as letters and diaries bring the period vividly to life." 14 Gelardi, Julia P. FROM SPLENDOR TO REVOLUTION: THE ROMANOV WOMEN, 1847-1928.
New York St. Martin's Press, 2011 0312371152 / 9780312371159 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
482 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs. "The years between the early 1850s and the late 1920s marked a turbulent and significant era for Russia. During that time the country underwent a massive transformation, taking it from days of grandeur under the tsars to the chaos of revolution and the beginnings of the Soviet Union. At the center of this tumult were four women of the Romanov dynasty. Marie Alexandrovna and Olga Constantinovna were born into the family, Russian grand duchesses at birth. Marie Feodorovna and Marie Pavlovna married into the dynasty: the former born a princess of Denmark, the latter a duchess of the German duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. These Romanov women, distinguished in varying degrees by their beauty and elegance, their wealth and power, savored a life of privilege and unsurpassed luxury. Marie Alexandrovna, Tsar Alexander II's pampered daughter, astonished her mother-in-law, Queen Victoria, with her strength of character. Thrust into the role of queen at age sixteen, Olga Constaninovna's altruistic streak benefited Greeks and Russians alike. Charming and vivacious, Marie Feodorovna, the mother of the ill-fated Tsar Nicholas II, excelled in her role as empress. Formidable and ambitious, Marie Pavlovna emerged as a rival to Tsarina Alexandra, Nicholas II's embattled consort. (This book) presents the unforgettable political and personal dramas of these extraordinary women. What began for them as a time of splendor ended after World War I with Russia destroyed by revolution." Small soft bump to top corner of pages 367 to 436, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine - two tiny tears at top, one very small corner bump. Dust jacket has very light rubbing, soft crease down front hinge area, light edge wrinkling - maily at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

291 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w illustrations. "(E)xamines the often stormy relationships (of the generals and politicians of the Great War), portraying the decision-making process on both sides. Many of the individuals involved remain household names today over eighty years on: Douglas Haig, Ferdinand Foch, David Lloyd George, Woodrow Wilson and the German Kaiser, Wilhelm II. The results of their endeavours led to the now legendary carnage in Gallipoli, on the Somme, in the mud of Flanders and the frozen heights of the Alps. How did these great men conduct their relationships and decision-making? To answer this, the chapters range widely to look at the Home Front, the Western Front and America at war. They also deal with the role of royalty and sideshows such as Italy, where Britian and France came to the aid of faltering allies. In all of this, defeat or victory would be decided by the most forceful and dynamic leaders willing to listen to and accept the wisest counsel. (This book) brings together the works of distinguished authorities on this ever-fascinating period and adds significantly to our understanding of the often complex relationships at play." Minor browning to edges of textblock, two tiny edge tears with crease at top of page 139/140 - archivally taped. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling.

Bodley Head / Army Records Society, London, 1985, first edition.
438 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 037030683X Two b&w maps. "Among the papers of Field Marshal Sir Henry Wilson in the Imperial War Museum are some 300 letters dating from his time as professional head of the British Army. W ilson was Chief of the Imperial General Staff, February 1918 to February 1922, and the correspondence selected for this Army Records Society volume reflects all the principal military concerns of the period. During the last nine months of th e F i r s t World War the great German spring offensive, the Allied successes in the late summer and autumn, and final victory in November dominate the letters. Post-war problems of demobilisation and army re-building were followed by the difficu lt i es o f me et ing wide-range military commitments throughout the world. At home domestic revolution necessitated that the army prepare for operations in aid of the civil power. Abroad military action had to be co-ordinated with the French in ord er to en fo rce th e peace treaty with Germany and support Allied policy in Eastern Europe. Further demands were made on the army by calls to repress nationalist unrest in Ireland, Egypt, Indian and Mesopotamia (Iraq), together with communal vio len ce i n Pa les tine . A ll these topics are covered in the correspondence, which in particular demonstrates Wilson's growing disillusionment with the government's Irish policy. Wilson was himself an Irishman with strong Unionist sympathies whic h ma teria lly c ontr ibute d to his assassination by Irish nationalists just a few months after retiring from the War Office."
