MERE ANARCHY., Allen, Woody.
2 Allen, Woody. MERE ANARCHY.
Random House, New York, 2007, first edition.
160 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 9781400066414 "Here, in his first collection since his three hilarious classics 'Getting Even', 'Without Feathers', and 'Side Effects', Woody Allen has managed to write a book that not only a nswers the most profound questions of human existence but is also the perfect size to place under any short table leg to prevent wobbling. 'I awoke Friday, and because the universe is expanding it took me longer than usual to find my robe,' h e e x p l ains in a piece on physics called 'Strung Out'. In other flights of inspirational sanity we are introduced to a cast of characters only Allen could imagine: Jasper Nutmeat, Flanders Mealworm, and the independent film mogul E. Coli Big g s, j u st t o na me a few. Whether he is writing about art, sex, food, or crime ('Pugh has been a policeman as far back as he can remember. His father was a notorious bank robber, and the only way Pugh could get to spend time with him was to a pp reh end h im' ), he is explosively funny. In 'This Nib for Hire,' a Hollywood bigwig comes across an author's book in a little country store and describes it in a way that aptly captures this magnificent volume: 'Actually,' the producer says, 'I 'd n ever se en a bo ok rema indered in the kindling section before'." SPLENDOUR AT COURT: DRESSING FOR ROYAL OCCASIONS SINCE 1700., Arch, Nigel and Marschner, Joanna.
3 Arch, Nigel and Marschner, Joanna. SPLENDOUR AT COURT: DRESSING FOR ROYAL OCCASIONS SINCE 1700.
London Unwin Hyman, London, (1987), Ist edition. 1987 0713526610 / 9780713526615 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
128 pp, 10 1/2" H. Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour with photographs, reproductions, drawings. "(P)rovides a lively picture of contrasting courtly scenes through the ages. It takes us from the paralysingly formal Court of Queen Anne to the outlandish ostentation of fifty years later when the Prince of Wales's dancing feet twinkled with 30,000 Pounds worth of diamonds attached to his shoe buckles. It conjures up the social butterflies of the Victorian age and a young debutante in the 1920's having difficulty tucking the essential three white feathers into her fashionably bobbed hair style. The fairy tale dresses and gold encrusted uniforms described and illustrated in this book have echoed or defied the fashions of the world right up to the present day. The last debutante to be presented at Court left Buckingham Palace in 1958, but in ceremonies such as the State Opening of Parliament courtly costume and tradition still linger with us." Spine is slightly twisted, minor toning on pastedowns. Dust jacket has light wear at bottom of front flap-fold, light edge wrinkling - mainly at top of rear panel, very soft crease down rear panel.

467 pp, 9" H. B&w illustrations. "A legendary work of religious scholarship and art history, available in English for the first time. This extraordinary - and extraordinarily beautiful - volume introduces readers to a compendium of animal symbolism that ranks with the greatest of classical and medieval bestiaries. (It) was the life's work of the French Catholic scholar Louis Charbonneau-Lessay, who combed the religious traditions of ancient Egypt, classical Greece and Rome, early and medieval Christianity, Gnosticism, Kabbalah, and alchemy to research it. First published in France at the outbreak of World War II and nearly destroyed in the war's devastations, this masterpiece of scholarship has been translated and abridged (from its original thousand-page length) by D.M. Dooling, the founder and editorial director of 'Parabola: The Magazine of Myth and Tradition', and includes 400 woodcuts by the author." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. HOPE IS THE THING WITH FEATHERS: A PERSONAL CHRONICLE OF VANISHED BIRDS., Cokinos, Christopher.
6 Cokinos, Christopher. HOPE IS THE THING WITH FEATHERS: A PERSONAL CHRONICLE OF VANISHED BIRDS.
New York Jeremy P. Tarcher / Putnam 2000 1585420069 / 9781585420063 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
359 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "There was a time when massive flocks of Passenger Pigeons blotted out the sun, and bright green Carolina Parakeets were so numerous that they looked, according to an early American pioneer, 'like an atmosphere of gems.' But these birds - as well as the Labrador Duck, the Ivory-billed Woodpecker, the Heath Hen, and the Great Auk - now live only as tantalizing but hazy legends. Driven by a desire to understand how and why this came to be, (the author) embarked on ten years of extraordinary detective work. Traveling from Bird Rock in the Gulf of St. Lawrence to Louisiana's tangled bayous in search of those who stalked these birds and those who tried to save them, he discovered strange stories and glorious quests, tales of scientific heroism and political stupidity, of inconceivable apathy and equally astonishing personal devotion. A compelling blend of science, history, politics, and memoir, (this) is a richly detailed and ultimately uplifting narrative of dedication, discovery, and wonder." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkle at top of rear panel.

DREAMCATCHERS: MYTHS AND HISTORY. (DREAM CATCHERS), Gottlieb, Julie V., Researcher
7 Gottlieb, Julie V., Researcher DREAMCATCHERS: MYTHS AND HISTORY. (DREAM CATCHERS)
Etobicoke Prospero 1999 1552678458 / 9781552678459 Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
128 pp, 10 1/4" H. Colour and b&w photographs, drawings. "In Ojibway tradition, mothers and grandmothers netted tiny circular cobweb-like charms from willow and sinew. These delicate charms were not meant to last but were intended to protect newborn children from 'everything evil, just as a spider's web catches and holds everything that comes in contact with it'. The beauty of dreamcatchers is reflected in their symmetry and natural accents. For generations, they have been crafted by making a hoop out of fresh wood, and then weaving a web inside the circle of deer sinew or colored thread. The unbroken strand of web/sinew is symbolic of eternity. Good dreams are also helped into the sleeper's dream world by feathers and colored beads that are attached at the bottom of the web. Careful attention is paid to leaving a hole in the middle of the web; if this is neglected, healthy dreams cannot find their way through to the dreamer." Contents: The Ojibway People; The Legend of the Dreamcatcher; Dreamcatchers and Children; The Dream Quest; Contemporary Issues - The Spiritual Legacy of Dreamcatchers; How to Make a Dreamcatcher; Notes and Bibliography; Index. Tiny dint on top edge of rear board. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling, one very small edge tear archivally taped, a few tiny dints on hinges.

9 Horak, Jiri and Carruth, Jane. Translated by Alice Denesova. FOLK AND FAIRY TALES FROM BOHEMIA.
London Hamlyn 1973 0601071387 / 9780601071388 Hard Cover Very Good Fair Jiri Trnka.
186 pp, 11 1/4" H. Dark plum cloth with silver lettering on spine, silver illustration on front board. Pictorial endpapers, full-page colour illustrations and smaller b&w drawings by Jiri Trnka. "No book of fairy tales is complete without its magic spells, enchanted princesses and deeds of daring. But in this collection of tales from Bohemia the familiar strains of fantasy are mixed with unusual touches of the humorous and the bizarre. In these stories you will meet the old childless couple who are given a hedgehog for a son; the magic whistle which can summon birds, animals and fish; the fiddle whose music is so spellbinding that whoever hears it must dance; and a white goose which turns into a beautiful girl. You will read of the twelve brothers' adventures when they find a magic castle and meet the twelve enchanted princesses; the dog Toby who tricks the wolf, and the clever cobbler who manages to outwit the devil. There is the story of the prince who finds a greyhound and a magic pouch, and the story of a blacksmith who works hard for a strange reward. These traditional favorites of Czech and Moravian storytellers have been virtually unknown until now in this country, and their translation and retelling are done with skill and charm." Toronto McGraw-Hill Ryerson 1976 0070823405 / 9780070823402 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good - Alan Daniel, cover art.
179 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). The award-winning Canadian author's first novel. " 'Every year a new mate; it is beyond imagining. New feathers to rustle, new beaks to bang, new dense, twiggy nests to construct.' muses Judith Gill as she and her husband and children watch a television program on birds. Every-thing, from the suburban house she and her family live in to her choice of friends, has been made along conventional lines. As she herself says, 'I never think anymore of the kind of life I once wanted to have'. She has built around her life a hedge of restraint, 'a violet-tinted reserve', deriving her pleasures from small, everyday ceremonies which add their own unique flavour and colour. That delicate balance between the obvious and the mysterious forms the focus as Judith observes and investigates the hidden drives and motives of her own life, the lives of the people around her and the life of the pioneer woman she is dissecting for a book, Susanna Moodie. Judith's husband is elusive, her children remote, her friends motivated by needs and aspirations she herself has long abandoned. Untangling the entrapment of facts and fictions leads her to heightened self- awareness and rather surprising discoveries." Previous owner's bookplate with blacked out name on free front endpaper, minor edge wear, one page with tiny corner crease, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, one small edge tear, very light rubbing/soiling on rear panel, a few tiny edge chips.
