6 Beal, Bob & Macleod, Rod. PRAIRIE FIRE: THE 1885 NORTH-WEST REBELLION.

"(T)ells us about the Metis, who simply wanted the long-standing boundaries of their river-lot farms respected by the government as Ottawa divided up the land to sell it to homesteaders. It tells about the Indians, whose land had been sold by the government and tradition and self-support destroyed, and who were now literally starving while the government broke its promises or tried to tie them to concessions. It tells us of local government officials, who could not agree among themselves whether the Indians should be treated with discipline or with food. It tells us about the frightened settlers and townspeople, caught between the Indians and Metis they often sympathized with and the government they looked to for support. And it tells about the soldiers, who heroically set out to quell a rebellion, but whose greatest ordeal was the long train journey on which they were beset by freezing cold and extreme shortages of food." 183 pp, + photographs at rear, 16 mo (6 3/4" H). B&w photographs. "The virgin lands development is part of my life. It all began on a frosty Moscow day at the end of January 1954, when I was summoned to the Central Committee of the CPSU. The problem was familiar to me already and this was not the first time I had heard about the virgin lands; the new thing was that I would be entrusted with their development on a mass scale. The project was to be launched in Kazakhstan in the coming spring and the schedule was tight." OX BELLS & FIREFLIES: A MEMOIR., Buckler, Ernest.
11 Buckler, Ernest. OX BELLS & FIREFLIES: A MEMOIR.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1968 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Walter Richards.
302 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). B&w illustrations. "Oxen were still yoked to sledges and the scythe and the ax and the crosscut saw were common everyday tools when Ernest Buckler grew up on a Nova Scotia farm at the edge of the wilderness. (This book) recalls those days. With sudden stabbing immediacy it brings the reader a bird sound, an odor, acrid or delicious, a remembered vagary of wind or sun, the timbre of a voice, or the true look of the men and women who peopled the Nova Scotia of Mr. Buckler's boyhood. It brings back as well the whole texture of a life that now exists only in our memories of the snowbound world of Whittier and the farm life of our grandfathers' times - a life so deeply rooted in the eleentals of earth and rock, wind and weather, and so closely paced to the rhythm of the seasons, of birth, growth and death, that each change on the face of nature (a blood-red sunset, a frost at dawn, the first pales leaves on a silver birch) is resonant with meaning." Gift inscription and two small stamps on free front endpaper, small bump to top edge of front board, minor rubbing. Dust jacket is price clipped, has very light edge wear/wrinkling, two very small tears and one tiny chip.

PIGS I HAVE KNOWN., Carnegie, Sacha. Illustrated by Anne Gordon.
13 Carnegie, Sacha. Illustrated by Anne Gordon. PIGS I HAVE KNOWN.
Peter Davies, London, 1958, first edition.
254 pp, 8vo (8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w drawings. "This is definitely not a text-book on the art of pig-keeping. True, Major Carnegie runs a pig-farm not far from Aberdeen which he has built up, starting from scratch, into a paying conc ern. His credentials are thus established. But his object in writing (this book) has quite clearly been not to instruct but to entertain, and he has uproariously succeeded. In the pages of this very funny, very realistic, intensely human t a l e o f endeavour, we are introduced to a wide variety of pleasant and less pleasant pigs and pleasant and less pleasant people. There are trials and tribulations in plenty - in such plenty, indeed, that one wonders how the author found time in t he l a st f e w years to write his admirable books. But the accent is always on the humorous side of even the most desperate crises; and the story, after all, is in its modest way a success story. At the beginning Major Carnegie knew nothing wha tso eve r abo ut pi gs except that they grunted, and sizzled nicely in the frying-pan; by the end he knows, and so do we, that there is a great deal between the grunt and the sizzle. Those who in childhood were beguiled by Beatrix Potter's 'Pig ling Bla nd' wi ll l ove th e book; pig-keepers, large and small scale, will find it edifying to a degree; and indeed its appeal extends to all who enjoy the realities of country life and country matters." Previous owner's name address on free fr ont e nd pa per, bo ok sl ight ly c ocked, minor edge wear, minor rubbing. Dust jacket has wear, chips, small tears, creases/wrinkling , light fading to spine, rubbing, surface paper loss and is price-clipped. Very Good/Fair

Burlington, Ontario Windsor Publications 1988 0897812573 / 9780897812573 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
184 pp, 11 1/4" H. B&w and colour photographs, reproductions. "(The authors) describe Manitoba's beginnings as a fur trade empire under the Hudson's Bay Company. They depict the development of the province's resources and potential as a national priority when, in 1870, a very small Province of Manitoba was created to spearhead the development of a western agrarian empire. Working within a changing social and economic climate, entrepreneurs struggled to establish Winnipeg as the West's premier city, and situated that city as the hub of a transportation and distribution network that supported the province's heartland. Ranging forward, the authors' accounting of the province's role in agriculture, industry, hydro, mining, and tourism is given within the context of national and international forces. Roger Newman has prepared histories of selected Manitoba businesses and organizations whose contributions to the development of the Keystone Province should not go unrecorded." Minor wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling.

"(T)he story of a young Anglo-Irish beauty's visit to Delhi for the 1911 Royal Durbar, where a new King, George V, is to be proclaimed Emperor to reinforce the loyalty to the Crown of India's ruling Princes. For a fortnight of relentless ceremony, unheard of extravagance and imposing military spectacle, in the setting of a vast Tented City complete with its own farms, railway, telegraph and post offices, Lilah Wingfield meets many of the most remarkable colonial characters of the day, including some of the foremost Indian Princes, vying to stage the most lavish display to prove their devotion to the Raj. As the tents are dismantled, Lilah travels through India - to the dangerous Khyber Pass on the Afghan border, to Rajasthan, to the gory sites of the Mutiny and to stay with India's only female ruler, the Begum of Bhopal. Her diary shows her deepening awareness of the ambivalence of certain maharajahs towards British Rule even while she is being entertained royally in their lakeside palaces. Her Irish upbringing gives her an instictive feeling for the mixture of their longing for independence and an affection for the mother country." Minor wrinkling at bottom of spine.
