311 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0887621333 Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "On June 6, 1944, nearly 15,000 Canadians - at sea, in the air, and on the ground - joined the long-anticipated D-Day inva sion of Nazi-occupied Europe on the Normandy beaches. The piece of ground on which the Canadian fought so hard against heavily armed and entrenched German troops was code-named 'Juno'. On that day, the Canadians fought their way farther inland t h a n any other Allied troops. For Canada, this was an extraordinary moment of bravery, sacrifice, and coming of age in the nation's history....(This book) tells the story of Juno in the voices of the men who were there - young farmers from Manit ob a an d Saskatchewan, fresh-faced high-school graduates from Ontario, workers from mines and factories in the Maritimes, and eager recruits from Quebec and Newfoundland....In what might be described as 'Canada's longest day', we join the action ho ur by ho ur, minute by minute. We take to the skies with the airmen who flew fighters and bombers over the beaches. We ply the Channel with the sailors who swept the waters of German mines and navigated landing craft to the French coast line . We go in wit h troops who leapt off those craft into waters bristling with booby-trapped obstacles and raked by machinegun fire to establish a foothold on Juno Beach. Ted Barris has interviewed hundreds of veterans to piece together one of Canada's pro udes t day s , and one of the most significant battles of our time." LAND OF PROMISE., Blackburn, John H. Edited and with Introduction by John Archer.
5 Blackburn, John H. Edited and with Introduction by John Archer. LAND OF PROMISE.
Toronto Macmillan of Canada 1970 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
238 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "Alberta in the early days of (the 20th century) was the last, best west. Each year immigrants from many nations arrived in search of cheap, readily available land. Among them was the Blackburn family, which came from the United States in 1911 to settle on a farm at Tofield, near Edmonton. Not yet sixteen, John Blackburn immediately went to work helping his father with the many tasks that would create a permanent home on the virgin land - clearing, breaking, fencing, sowing, digging wells, and building a house and barns. A few years later he married a neighbour's daughter and began the cycle again on his own land at Lavoy in the Vegreville district. Here he farmed until the late 1930s, and from his experience he writes movingly of the farmer's ceaseless battle against time, economic fluctuations, and the hazards of drought, hail, and early frosts. Throughout his story he gives particlar attention to the essential role of the hired man in prairie agriculture. Nor does he negelect the part played by the farm wife with her never-ending work. But life was not all drudgery for the pioneer and his family; even in hard times an active community life provided them with many diversions to lessen the harshness of their existence. For the farmers there sometimes seemed to be more bad years than good, and the financial returns were often slender. But many of the people who lived through those years remember the simple, uncomplicated life of the pioneer as the happiest time of their lives. John Blackburn's account of pioneer farming in Alberta is typical of the experience of many prairie settlers, and is an important contribution to the history of the Canadian West." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, faint erased pencil mark at top of front free endpaper. Dust jacket has minor browning at top/bottom edges of flaps, tiny black ink speck on spine, minor edge wear/wrinkling.

427 pp, 8vo (9 1/4" H). "Through war, depression, and social upheaval, the first half of the twentieth century was a period of unprecedented turbulence in Canada. In this lively and perhaps contentious survey, (the authors) explore the political and economic forces that shaped this era of change. Beginning at the turn of the century, they consider the status of Canada in the empire and the world, the burgeoning growth of its economy, and the development of social and labour problems, up to the eruption of war in 1914. They discuss the political currents running through Canada during two wars, the interwar economic boom and depression, and the plans for post-war reconstruction, and assess the impact of these and other events on Canada's political, economic, social, and cultural institutions." Toronto Fitzhenry & Whiteside 1976 0889024014 / 9780889024014 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good Signed by Author
177 pp, 9 1/4" H. Signed by author on title page, under printed name. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "Between 1896 and 1914, the Canadian government carried out a vigorous programme in central Europe, Britain, and the United States to persuade people to immigrate to the Canadian west, 'The Last Best West'. Hundreds of thousands of prospective settlers from diverse and distinctive ethnic backgrounds responded, leading to an extraordinary mass migration which changed the face of Canada. This great campaign to populate the west is presented here by Jean Bruce, in a compelling and moving selection of more than 190 photographs of the period, together with short related texts. Her superb pictorial history gives a fine sense of scope and perspective to this vital period in the growth of Canada. We see all the paraphernalia of the government advertising campaign, the journey from the setllers' homelands, the first prairie homesteads, the development of western cities and industries and, above all, the people whose lives transformed - and were transformed by - the Canadian west." PIGS I HAVE KNOWN., Carnegie, Sacha. Illustrated by Anne Gordon.
9 Carnegie, Sacha. Illustrated by Anne Gordon. PIGS I HAVE KNOWN.
Peter Davies, London, 1958, first edition.
254 pp, 8vo (8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w drawings. "This is definitely not a text-book on the art of pig-keeping. True, Major Carnegie runs a pig-farm not far from Aberdeen which he has built up, starting from scratch, into a paying conc ern. His credentials are thus established. But his object in writing (this book) has quite clearly been not to instruct but to entertain, and he has uproariously succeeded. In the pages of this very funny, very realistic, intensely human t a l e o f endeavour, we are introduced to a wide variety of pleasant and less pleasant pigs and pleasant and less pleasant people. There are trials and tribulations in plenty - in such plenty, indeed, that one wonders how the author found time in t he l a st f e w years to write his admirable books. But the accent is always on the humorous side of even the most desperate crises; and the story, after all, is in its modest way a success story. At the beginning Major Carnegie knew nothing wha tso eve r abo ut pi gs except that they grunted, and sizzled nicely in the frying-pan; by the end he knows, and so do we, that there is a great deal between the grunt and the sizzle. Those who in childhood were beguiled by Beatrix Potter's 'Pig ling Bla nd' wi ll l ove th e book; pig-keepers, large and small scale, will find it edifying to a degree; and indeed its appeal extends to all who enjoy the realities of country life and country matters." Previous owner's name address on free fr ont e nd pa per, bo ok sl ight ly c ocked, minor edge wear, minor rubbing. Dust jacket has wear, chips, small tears, creases/wrinkling , light fading to spine, rubbing, surface paper loss and is price-clipped. Very Good/Fair

(Osprey, London, 1996).
96 pp, large 8vo (9 3/4" H), soft cover. Profusely illustrated in color and b&w with photos, maps, battle plans, reproductions, uniform studies. "In 1881 the tension between Britain and the Boer farmers of southern Africa that had existed for 75 years boiled over into open conflict. The British entered the war full of confidence, yet in a few short weeks they had suffered three separate reverses before enduring their final humiliating defeat on the isolated summit of Majuba. George Colley's force were swept off their 'unassailable' position and into headlong retreat. It was a defeat that sent shock waves reverberating around the Empire." "The Osprey Campaign Series presents concise, authoritative accounts of the great conflicts of history. Each volume begins with an assessment of each commander's campaign stragegy, then recounts the progress of the fighting, blow-by-blow. More than 90 illustrations, including maps, charts and colour plates accompany the text, and a series of three-dimensional battle maps mark the critical stages of the campaign. Each volume concludes with a brief guide to the battlefield today, and detailed notes for wargamers." 188 pp, 8 5/8" H. B&w photographs. "This fascinating story of the life of one 'ordinary' Canadian is social history at its best - a first hand account of the home life, entertainment, working conditions and methods, manners and morals of past generations. Born in London, Ontario in 1888, S.J. Ferns left school at age 13 to throw himself into the struggle for existence. He describes the Harvester's Special trains, the work of threshing gangs in the Weset, his apprenticeship as a bricklayer, and his subsequent travels around a young and growing country to find work. Many of the events which have become significant historically - Calgary's first Stampede, Alberta's first oil strike, the opening of Detroit's first Ford plant - gain new meaning when seen through the eyes of one who had some personal involvement or was personally affected by them." Montreal McGill - Queen's University Press 1979 0773503218 / 9780773503212 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good
246 pp, 9 3/8" H. Dark blue boards with lighter blue and white lettering on spine and front board - no dust jacket (as issued). Map. "(T)he first full account of a major social and political movement of the interwar years in Canada: the campaign for 'Maritime Rights' which erupted in the Atlantic provinces after World War I. (T)races the history of the movement from its origins in the decline in relative status and influence of the Maritimes that accompanied the rise of the West and the growing dominance of the Central Canadian metropolises. Maritimers saw their political influence reduced, the underpinnings of their economy - especially in the critical areas of tariffs, freight rates, and subsidies - whittled away, and Canada defined in terms that seemed to exclude them. Adopting a strategy characteristic of the progressive movements of the period, they attempted through organization and agitation to restore their position. Farmers, fishermen, manufacturers, and organized labour articulated their demands, through the provincial press, boards of trade, union locals, educational conferences, and mass delegations to Ottawa. Although their efforts were largely defeated by the conflicting interests of stronger regions, and by the King government's adroitness in defusing protest through a policy of study and delay, the author believes that the aroused Maritimers had succeeded in establishing their difficulties in the public's mind as a national problem." Light edge wear, tear at top of last index page archivally taped, light wrinkling on page leaf 123/124.

20 Grayson, L.M. And Bliss, Michael, editors. THE WRETCHED OF CANADA: LETTERS TO R.B. BENNETT 1930-1935.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1971 0802018254 / 9780802018250 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
199 pp, 8 3/4" H. "These are the voices of the people who suffered most in the Great Depression of the 1930s - the prairie farmers, the unemployed workers, the old, the sick, and the very young. They lived in shacks, patched their clothes, and went to bed hungry. Their lives were bleak and still. Even the ordinary escape-hatches of the radio, the newspaper, and liquor were closed for many of them. Theirs was life at the bottom, a single-minded struggle for survival, monontonous and dreary. The editors have carefully culled 168 of the most interesting letters of the many thousands Prime Minister Bennett received during his term of office. The collection is unique in that it allows the poor to speak for themselves, bypassing the middle-class spokesmen - union leaders, social workers, radical politicians - who too often sketched the poor in their own image. These letters strip away the tawdry glamour and stupid nostalgia that somehow clouds the 1930s retrospect. They reveal how bad the thirties were for some people in Canada: worse perhaps than most of the history texts and even the survivors remember. In a vivid and very personal way this collection gives both those who lived throught the depression and those who know only the prosperity of the last few decades an inisght into the human casualties of economic upheaval." Minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor soiling/rubbing on rear panel, a few tiny edge chips/tears, very slight darkening to spine.
