204 pp, 9 7/8" H. B&w photographs, reproductions, drawings. "Of more than 600 Victoria Crosses awarded to British and Empire servicemen during the First World War, nineteen were awarded to airmen of the newly formed Royal Flying Corps and Royal Naval Air Service. Of these, four were posthumous awards and all but one of the total were for officers. Some of these valorous airmen were from humble backgrounds and with limited education, others were collegiate men from wealthy families, but in the words of one senior officer they all had in common 'the guts of a lion'. (This book provides fascinating insights into the lives of these bravest of the brave, and of the circumstances in which they won their country's highest award for valour." Clean bright copy.

208 pp, 10 3/4" H. "(H)ere in full nostalgic glory are the Farmans, Wrights, Dorniers, Sikorskys and Martins which created new thrills in a new industry out of man's struggle to fly. Palmer has built a rare book of adventure on the airways by presenting hundreds of (b&w) photographs from his collection which has taken him many years to assemble. With these is the story of development, told in a crisp, readable style with an appendix for the technically minded. Here are the gas bags and gyrocopters - the 'Char-a-banc' and 'City of Glasgow' - the first planes to pack the mail and the first to span the seas. You learn of the early German mosnters and the facts about Henry Ford's 'Tine Goose'. You find pictured the exteriors and interiors of airplanes that made one flight and of others still flying in these days of jets. You read about daring pilots and inventive genius." Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light rubbing on spine with some very light color loss, very light rubbing on panels.

FLYING THE OLD PLANES., Tallman, Frank. Preface by Ernest K. Gann. Introduction by Joe Brown.
9 Tallman, Frank. Preface by Ernest K. Gann. Introduction by Joe Brown. FLYING THE OLD PLANES.
Doubleday, Graden City, New York, 1973.
255 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0385091575 B&w and colour photographs. "Frank Tallman has flown them all - large and small, fragile and resilient, reliable and eccentric. And in this book, the 'King of the Stunt Pilots' takes you along, into the cockpit, on flights in twenty-five historic aircraft, from a 1909 Bleriot to the ubiquitous Flying Fortress of World War II, with a hot-air balloon and a Goodyear blimp thrown in for good measure. Using a skillful blend of prose and pictures, he demonstrates, for example, the unforgiving rudder of the Fokker Eindecker, the hazards of landing the narrow-gear Spad, the fantastic burst of power as the throttle is rammed home in the gull-winged Corsair, the speci a l c h a r m of the Maurice Farman - 'a gracious, tractable old crook'. Here, too, is the story of how Tallman rescued these grand old pioneers of flight for his collection of historic planes, the world's largest. Each detail was scrupulously s tu di e d, a nd a ll parts were checked for authenticity. His goal, in this book as well as in his collection, is to make the early days of manned flight not a group of hazy memories or dusty models in a museum, but a vivid experience of unique gra ce an d b eau ty. " Pre vious owner's name on front pastedown, wrinkling and light wear at top/bottom of spine, old tape residue at corners of free endpapers, tiny dint at top edge of front board book light cracked at pages 176/177. Dust jacket has be en pric e-cl ippe d, has light browning at edges and on hinges, small chips and tears at top/bottom of spine and hinges, minor soiling. Very Good-/Good
