9 Bailey, Hilary. CASSANDRA, PRINCESS OF TROY.
Jonathan Cape, London, (1993), Ist edition.
325 pp, large 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. Cassandra, having lived quietly on a farm for twenty years, begins to write her reminiscences of the past. It is a "tragic story, taken from one of the oldest and most famous tales ever told - the war between the Greeks and the Trojans. It begins with Helen's flight, with Paris of Troy, from her husband. It tells of how a Greek army crossed the sea to attack Troy and bring back Helen, of the fall of Troy and its terrible aftermath. In this wonderfully vivid historical novel the author imagines Cassandra, the Trojan prophetess, did not die as in the legend, but lived on in hiding for many years. As she begins to write, Cassandra believes she is free to tell her story, but it is not so - there are still secrets to be uncovered and her own tale has not ended...This marvellous and moving novel tells of the eternal forces of human life - about war and its consequences for men and women, about courage, feud(s), revenge and fated love." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling, light rubbing. VG+/VG

447 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "(T)he compelling saga of an artistic genius, a ruthless railroad tycoon, and a sordid crime of passion. In frontier California 130 years ago, English immigrant Eadweard Muybridge managed to capture time and play it back on a screen, inventing stop-motion photography and moving pictures, breakthrough technologies that ushered in our age of visual media. Bankrolling his endeavor was tycoon (and former California governor) Leland Stanford, who built the west half of the transcontinental railroad and personally drove in the last golden spike. Stanford's particular obsession was whether the four hooves of a running horse ever left the ground all at once, and with Muybridge he found an answer. But personal disaster overshadowed Muybridge's remarkable achievements. A visionary artist, and technically brilliant, he was also a murderer." Very light wrinkling at bottom of spine. THE CREST OF THE BROKEN WAVE: A NOVEL OF THE LIFE AND LOVES OF ROBERT BURNS. (VOLUME 4 OF "THE IMMORTAL MEMORY" SERIES.), Barke, James.
11 Barke, James. THE CREST OF THE BROKEN WAVE: A NOVEL OF THE LIFE AND LOVES OF ROBERT BURNS. (VOLUME 4 OF "THE IMMORTAL MEMORY" SERIES.)
Collins, London, 1953, 1st edition.
320 pp, small 8vo (7 15/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers. "....gives a vivid picture of Robert Burns at the height of his creative powers, acclaimed as Scotland's national bard and yet bitterly aware of the empty glory of that fame so far as any worth-while improvement in his immediate prospects are concerned. He has left the scene of his brief triumph in the Edinburgh drawing-rooms. He is a farmer again, trying to wrest a living from the grudging soil of Ellisland . . . H e h a s very much on his mind the cares of a wife and family, for whom he is determined to make a home. Through these pages the sterling worth of Jean Armour shines like a star. Bonnie Jean has hitherto had scant justice paid to her by b io gr ap he rs . He re her character is limned with admiration and affection. One understands the strength of the bond between her and Burns, and how it could withstand the devastating impact of Burns's infatuation for Anna Park, the golden-haire d H ebe of th e G lo b e T ave rn in Dumfries....But the story is concerned too with Burns's intellectual development, not only as a poet but as a thinker peculiarly sensitive to the fresh political breezes that are blowing in so strongly from Fra nce. ...T he b ook ends wi th the aba ndonment of the farm and of the life he had known since boyhood, the never-ending struggle with the land; already the shadow of his last tragic years in Dumfies lies darkly across his path...." LAND OF PROMISE., Blackburn, John H. Edited and with Introduction by John Archer.
13 Blackburn, John H. Edited and with Introduction by John Archer. LAND OF PROMISE.
Toronto Macmillan of Canada 1970 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
238 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "Alberta in the early days of (the 20th century) was the last, best west. Each year immigrants from many nations arrived in search of cheap, readily available land. Among them was the Blackburn family, which came from the United States in 1911 to settle on a farm at Tofield, near Edmonton. Not yet sixteen, John Blackburn immediately went to work helping his father with the many tasks that would create a permanent home on the virgin land - clearing, breaking, fencing, sowing, digging wells, and building a house and barns. A few years later he married a neighbour's daughter and began the cycle again on his own land at Lavoy in the Vegreville district. Here he farmed until the late 1930s, and from his experience he writes movingly of the farmer's ceaseless battle against time, economic fluctuations, and the hazards of drought, hail, and early frosts. Throughout his story he gives particlar attention to the essential role of the hired man in prairie agriculture. Nor does he negelect the part played by the farm wife with her never-ending work. But life was not all drudgery for the pioneer and his family; even in hard times an active community life provided them with many diversions to lessen the harshness of their existence. For the farmers there sometimes seemed to be more bad years than good, and the financial returns were often slender. But many of the people who lived through those years remember the simple, uncomplicated life of the pioneer as the happiest time of their lives. John Blackburn's account of pioneer farming in Alberta is typical of the experience of many prairie settlers, and is an important contribution to the history of the Canadian West." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, faint erased pencil mark at top of front free endpaper. Dust jacket has minor browning at top/bottom edges of flaps, tiny black ink speck on spine, minor edge wear/wrinkling.

ISBN 9780385665841 "Flavia de Luce, a dangerously brilliant eleven-year-old with a passion for chemistry and a genius for solving murders finds herself untangling two deaths - separated by time bu t linked by the unlikeliest of threads. Flavia thinks that her days of crime-solving in the bucolic English hamlet of Bishop's Lacey are over - and then Rupert Porson has an unfortunate rendezvous with electricity. The beloved puppeteer has had h i s own strings sizzled, but who'd do such a thing, and why? For Flavia, the questions are intriguing enough to make her put aside her chemistry experiments and schemes for vengeance against her insufferable big sisters. Astride Gladys, her trusty b icycle, Flavia sets out from the de Luce's crumbling family mansion in search of Bishop's Lacey's deadliest secrets. Does the madwoman who lives in Gibbet Wood know more than she's letting one? What of the vicar's odd ministrations to the catat oni c woman in the dovecote? Then there's a German pilot obsessed with the Bronte sisters, a reproachful spinster aunt, and even a box of poisoned chocolates. Most troubling of all is Porson's assistant, the charming but erratic Nialla. All clues poi nt toward a suspicious death years earlier and a case the local constables can't solve - without Flavia's help. But in getting so close to who's secretly pulling the strings of this dance of death, has our precocious heroine finally gotten in way o ver her head?" LUTYENS AND THE EDWARDIANS: AN ENGLISH ARCHITECT AND HIS CLIENTS., Brown, Jane.
16 Brown, Jane. LUTYENS AND THE EDWARDIANS: AN ENGLISH ARCHITECT AND HIS CLIENTS.
London Viking 1996 0670858714 / 9780670858712 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good-
276 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). "The great architect and his architecture are well known, but what about his patrons, his clients? Who were they? Why did they build? What did they pay for their buildings? From his earliest patrons, a stream of repressed gentlewomen of intelligence and means, through a galaxy of Edwardian heroes and villains, this book tells their stories. Some of them are famous, others unknown, except as Lutyen's clients: here are Herbert Jekyll, Jennie Churchill, J.M. Barrie, Hugh Lane, Victoria Sackville, lords, ladies, Souls, bankers, press barons, politicians, the beau monde of Edwardian England, as well as a schoolteacher who inherited a fortune and a prospering Bradford wool merchant. The complex networking of families and friends threads through the events and settings of Edwardian society, like a richly patterned embroidery. Everything of significance that Lutyens did had its roots in the Edwardian decade - and his clients turn out to be both the triumph and the tragedy of his career. (L)avishly illustrated with the human face of great architecture - sketches, drawings and photographs from family archives all over England." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, slight browning to spine, edge wrinkling - mainly at top edge.

192 pp, square large 8vo (9 1/4" H x 9 1/4" D). B&w photographs. "The immigrants who came to Canada in the ten years following the Second World War settled in a booming land with many new jobs to fill. The immigrants' reasons for coming here and their experiences in the new society were as varied as their own backgrounds. First were the war brides, some married after only a few weeks of courtship; there were refugees and displaced persons from e astern Europe and Russia; there were British and Dutch farm families, and thousands of others looking for a fresh start far from battle-scarred Europe. Then in the fifties came the Asians and blacks. Jean Bruce, herself an immigrant, tells through hundreds of in-depth intervies across Canada of these people as they fulfilled their dreams, and dispelled fears while establishing new roots. She has ranged the country in selecting photos from churches, ethnic organizations, private albums, the Public Archives, and diverse libraries and museums. In dealing not only with the immigrant experience, but also with changing attitudes towards immigration within Canadian society, (she) has raised issues which will continue to be important and controversial. But most importantly, she has created a portrait of Canada at a vibrant period in its history, a period which was to change the face of the nation forever." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor edge wear. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light rubbing, light browning.

302 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). B&w illustrations. "Oxen were still yoked to sledges and the scythe and the ax and the crosscut saw were common everyday tools when Ernest Buckler grew up on a Nova Scotia farm at the edge of the wilderness. (This book) recalls those days. With sudden stabbing immediacy it brings the reader a bird sound, an odor, acrid or delicious, a remembered vagary of wind or sun, the timbre of a voice, or the true look of the men and women who peopled the Nova Scotia of Mr. Buckler's boyhood. It brings back as well the whole texture of a life that now exists only in our memories of the snowbound world of Whittier and the farm life of our grandfathers' times - a life so deeply rooted in the eleentals of earth and rock, wind and weather, and so closely paced to the rhythm of the seasons, of birth, growth and death, that each change on the face of nature (a blood-red sunset, a frost at dawn, the first pales leaves on a silver birch) is resonant with meaning."
