Very light browning to endpapers, minor toning to edges of pages, small label from bookstore on rear pastedown, two small creases at bottom corner of page leaf 287/288, light browning to edges of text block - tiny soiling mark on fore-edge, light wear and wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor edge wear to boards, minor rubbing on boards, small shallow dent on front board. A collection of supernatural tales by British and American authors, including "Dickon the Devil" by Sheridan le Fanu. Each story has its own half title page, but no indication of authorship. Contents: Dickon the Devil; A Debt of Honor; Devereux's Dream; Catherine's Quest; Haunted; Pichon and Sons, of the Croix Rousse; The Phantom Fourth; The Spirit's Whisper; Dr. Feversham's Story; The Secret of the Two Plaster Casts; What Was It? Previous owner's signature, date (1896) and a very small number in ink on free front endpaper; the odd faint foxing mark on pages or tissues - mostly on preliminary pages; slight toning to page margins; moderate browning to spine; light edge wear; light soiling to boards; two very light corner bumps; minor lean to spine; browning to edges of text block. The historical vampirana includes accounts by such persons as a first-century Roman historian, a twelfth-century bishop, a Cambridge philosopher in the 1600s, the two major vampire experts - Calmet and Summers, and a nineteenth-century Yankee journalist. The literary pieces include: 'Carmilla' a classic tale by Le Fanu; a short story by Bram Stoker which was originally intended as the first chapter of 'Dracula'; a moving tale by Lawrence Durrell; and several thrillers by such masterful writers as Robert Bloch and Richard Matheson."
