2 Aubrac, Lucie. Translated by Konrad Bieber with the assistance of Betsy Wing. Introduction by Margaret Collins Weitz. OUTWITTING THE GESTAPO.
University of Nebraska Press, Lincoln, 1993, book club edition.
235 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations. "Lucie Aubrac was a young woman of Catholic and peasant background, teaching history in a Lyon's girls' school and newly married to Raymond, a Jewish engineer, when World War II broke out and divided France. Lucie and Raymond, living in the Vichy zone, soon joined the resistance movement that formed in opposition to the Nazis and their collaborators. 'We had the incredible good fortune', writes Lucie Aubrac, 'to l i v e a s ourselves - we did not have to adopt false identities or go into hiding - until the spring of 1943'. (This) is her harrowing account of the months of her most audacious participation in the Resistance: the months when, pregnant with her s ec on d c hi l d, she planned and took part in raids to free captive comrades - including her own husband, under Nazi death sentence - from the prisons of Klaus Barbie, the infamous 'Butcher of Lyon'." Prima, Rocklin, CA, 1992, first edition.
192 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1559581425 Map endpapers, b&w illustrations. "In German-occupied France in 1940, only a few people refused to give up the great ideals of their country - liberty, equality, and fraternity. O ne of these was Raoul Laporterie. Starting right after the fall of France, he supplied false documents, money, transport, and shelter to more than 1,600 people. Those rescued were chiefly Sephardic Jews of Bordeaux, but also included a co v e y o f n uns, some French soldiers evading prison camps, and Allied flyers fleeing captivity. He was assisted by his wife, Laure, and his daughter, Irene, his employees in his clothing stores, and all the residents of the village of Bascons, ne ar t h e bo r de r between Occupied and Vichy France, where he was mayor. Risking death daily, Laporterie managed to outmaneuver and fool the Germans repeatedly. A true Christian, he loved others regardless of the consequences. Today, at ag e 9 4, he ha s rec ei ved m a ny honours from the governments of France and Israel. This is his dramatic story." Minor edge wear, minor browning on bottom front edge. Bodley Head / Army Records Society, London, 1986, first edition.
456 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0370307380 "The events at the Curragh Camp near Dublin on 20/21 March 1914, and the drama continued in London over the following nine days, have a special significance in British military his tory. The outline of the story is well enough known: Brig.-General Hubert Gough and fellow-officers in the 3rd Cavalry Brigade threatened to resign rather than implement what seemed to them a policy of coercing Ulster into accepting Irish H o m e R u l e ; Gough secured a written guarantee from J.E.B. Seely, Secretary of State for War, that the army would not be so employed; Asquith's Liberal cabinet, however, repudiated the guarantee, which led Seely to resign, along with the Chie f o f th e I mp er ia l General Staff Field Marshal Sir John French and the Adjutant General Lt-General Sir John Spencer Ewart. Although sometimes erroneously referred to as a 'Mutiny', the Curragh Incident does remain one of the very few occasion s in mo der n ti mes wh en th e army asserted itself in face of the civil power in peacetime....The Incident has hitherto generally been seen in terms either of a Liberal plot to coerce Ulster or of a military plot to thwart the democratic process. By emp hasi si ng the wide r i mpa ct of the Incident on the army, this selection of original documents illuminates a number of aspects that have gone unremarked. The army's increasing concern that it might be drawn into civil war in Ulster is ill u str ated , and th e a ccep ted v ersi on o f events in Ireland and London is shown in a new light. New evidence shows the impact of the Curragh Incident on the army outside Ireland, and on the Royal Navy's attitude. The common assumption that A sq uith 's as suming the off ice o f Secr etary of S tate for War on 31 March 1914 closed the Incident is shown here to be false - the morale of the army and the officer corps continued to be affected by the Incident and its aftermath right up to th e out break of the Great War. (Thi s book) throw s impo rtant new light both on British militay history and the ever present Irish 'problem'." 212 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w plates. "(A) biography of a brilliant and impudent man living in eighteenth-century France: Caron de Beaumarchais. It was a life of fantastic adventure. Inventor, secret agent, politician, courtier, publisher and supplier of arms to the American colonies, Beaumarchais also wrote plays. Music lovers enchanted by Mozart's 'The Marriage of Figaro" and Rossini's 'The Barber of Seville' remember that they are based on the brilliant comedies of Beaumarchais. Born Pierre Caron in 1732, Beaumarchais was the son of a prosperous Parisian clockmaker. As a child, he was apprenticed to his father, became fairly famous in the field of watchmaking and invented several new and complicated devices. He soon found wider scope by buying an appointment at the Court of Louis XV, where he swiftly rose to the highest favor. The King sent him on a secret mission to Madrid, and he returned to find himself accused of forgery and embezzlement. He became emeshed in a series of legal actions in which he fought vigorously to maintain his honor. Louis XV, meanwhile, sent him secretly to London to stop a blackmailer from publishing scandal about the royal mistress, Madame du Barry. The next King, Louis XVI, gave him two similar missions; the first, to smother a scurrilous attempt to libel Marie-Antoinette, took him to London, Amsterdam and Vienna; the second, to recover some papers of the late King which were of explosive importance, involved him in London with the extraordinary Chevalier d'Eon, a secret agent who, on occasion, wore female dress and was widely (but wrongly) believed to be a woman. While in England, Beaumarchais allied himself with the cause of the American colonies; and when Louis XVI refused to aid the rebels openly, (he) organized a private firm to supply them with arms and munitions as well as ships, with astonishing results. Meanwhile, his play 'The Barber of Seville' had been acclaimed and its sequel, 'The Marriage of Figaro', so audaciously mocked the Government that for five years the King forbade its performance. But when public readings spread its fame, and when the ban was reluctantly lifted, all Paris fought to see it. When the Revolution broke out, Beaumarchais witnessed the storming of the Bastille. In 1792 false rumors caused an hysterical mob to invade his ostentatious mansion; he escaped to a friend's house. Later he was arrested, released through influence of a woman, and after further adventures he found himself a proscribed refugee in Hamburg. He returned to France in 1796 and died there three years later." "This is a new edition of Foster's recognized handbook, brought completely up-to-date, and incuding a full section on the 'Nullo' count, its rules and tactics." "Foster's Manual of Royal Auction explains the game instead of giving hard and fast directions which will surely mislead inexperienced players. Foster, by working out sample hands, shows how certain combinations of play result and trains the reader to make the most of his hand under any circumstances. After a perusal of this book one will have an understanding of the game which will give him superiority over players who stick to rules learned by rote." 226 pp, 9 5/16" H. "As an introduction to modern myth, (this book) masterfully encompasses a wide circle of historical and literary materials. John Greenway examines first the nature of time in the mythic consciousness, then the role of the Nordic past as a myth of origins from the Renaissance through the romantics. Only in the various forms of myth can man find identity, the author argues, and he sees the varying images of the Viking past as unconscious attempts by northern nations to legitimize their own values. Central to (his) methodology is his discussion of the sacred in language not itself sacred and the failure of modern myth to make the primitive distinction between the sacred and the profane. The author establishes the theoretical base of his discussion by examining the nature of time in mythic consciousness in terms of Norse myth. After suggesting several ways in which the mythic apprehension of reality conditioned medieval Icelandic narrative, (he) elaborates on the dialectical relationship between myth and reason, using as an example the conversion of the Germanic tribes to Christianity. Maintaining that myth is neither true nor false but always either expressive or not, Greenway traces the origin, rise, and fall of two great modern myths of northern birth: Swedish Gothicism in the seventeenth century and the Ossianic craze of the eighteenth. Both myths, one social, the other literary, illustrate the singular tension in the modern mind between mythic imperatives and the impulse to de-mythologize. Finally, 'The Golden Horns' traces the romantic belief in a 'new mythology' which synthesizes myth and reason from its early acceptance through its eventual repudiation. In his conclusions about the state of myth in the modern world, Greenway postulates that we have inherited the romantic respect for myth as truth but lack the romantic faith in transcendence necessary to establish myth's reality. We are trapped in a physical and moral world which we, as romantics, recognize to be symbolic in its representations, but we lack a belief in the transcendental reality of these symbols." "Transformed almost overnight from third mate on a tanker into a Royal Naval Reserve lieutenant, Murdoch Murray Magnusson found that with 1939 drawing to a close ne ither he nor the war itself seemed to be getting anywhere. But then a summons to London from Admiral Sir James Cockayne radically changed all that. The admiral wanted to know about Magnusson's knowledge of certain Scandinavian languages a n d a b o u t his apprenticeship in sail. The Navy needed information about German raiders and blockade runners operating in northern waters, and one of the places to get it was the neutral port of Narvik. Magnusson was to go there in a windjamm er : t he b ar qu e ' Oulu' which, furthermore, was to sail under false colours. On arrival, he was startled to find that 'Oulu' was not the only windjammer in the northern fjord. Soon he and the crew of the old sailing ship were to play a key ro le in t he his tor ic re sc ue of British prisoners from the notorious prison-ship 'Altmark', and then to plunge into the maelstrom of the German invasion of Norway...." 11 Hewer, Howard. Foreword by Group Captain Kenneth McDonald. Introduction by Flight Lieutenant William H. Dixon. IN FOR A PENNY, IN FOR A POUND: THE ADVENTURES AND MISADVENTURE OF A WIRELESS OPERATOR IN BOMBER COMMAND.
Stoddart, Toronto, 2000.
272 pp, large 8vo (9 5/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 077373273X B&w photographs, maps. "In 1940, 19-year-old Howard Hewer dreamed of being the next Billy Bishop, of piloting Spitfires or Hurricanes over Europe. His dream was shattered when he was selected instead for a career as a wireless operator. But his thirst for adventure would certainly be satisfied. He was not to be a pilot, but he would play a vital role in air operations in World War II over Europe and the Mediterrane an. Hewer's life in Bomber Command was never dull, and almost always bittersweet. During training, he fell out of a Fairey Battle, and held on by only one foot high over Lake Erie. In London, he survived a run-in with the infamous 'Piccad i l l y C o m mandos', then dug for victims of an air raid in the rubble of a dance hall. But Hewer found life in the belly of Wellington, or 'Wimpy', bombers the most hazardous of all. He and his crew of 218 and 148 Squadrons flew important nigh t op er at i on s ov er Germany and North Africa, dropping their deadly payloads while dodging enemy flak. All the while, Hewer was busy at the radio controls identifying his Wimpy's position and detecting false codes from Axis operators, who were al way s o n t he pr ow l t o lure unsuspecting Allied bombers into landing on enemy airfields. On perhaps his bravest mission of the war, as a driver for the RAF in North Africa, Hewer drove deep behind enemy lines, where he exchanged fire with I tal ian troo ps. An othe r t ime, in Suez, he became bored while on medical leave, and joined on as a wireless operator on another operation. Soon after takeoff, the plane took flak and crash landed on the desert floor. Hewer was trapped, his le gs c rush ed ag ains t hi s rad io, the e ngines of the plane threatening to explode. At times comical, at others tragic, Howard Hewer's stirring story will leave a lasting imprint on the memory of its readers." Dust jacket has minor rubbing. Nea r Fin e/Nea r Fine

96 pp, 9 1/4" H. Pictorial endpapers, many b&w and colour reproductions, decorations. "The enigma of Guinevere, a beautiful and courageous queen or a disgraced adulteress, has received less attention than the achievements of King Arthur, the adventures of noble Sir Lancelot and other knights, the magic of Merlin, or the sorcery of Morgan Le Fay. A key figure in the life of Camelot, this remarkable woman is seen variously as a scholar, seductress, warrior and gentle beauty by the countless artists and writers who have depicted her. Who, then, was Guinevere? (This) is an elegant anthology of poetry and prose, literature and legend, with commentary by Arthurian scholar Andrea Hopkins, accompanied by beautiful illustrations from medieval manuscript illumination to pre-Raphaelite masterpieces. An enlightening introduction describes the contradictory traditions of Celtic oral sources and the blending of these strands by medieval writers into the complex legend we know know. Guinevere's roles - as educated scribe to the court, hapless victim of circumstances, wise counsellor, devoted wife of King Arthur, and lover of Sir Lancelot - are explored through writings through the centuries by detractors and admirers alike." "This is the first book on the 'Tirpitz' to draw on the rich store of 'Ultra' signals, the German top secret coded naval signals that were decrypted by t he famous code-breakers of Bletchley Park and are only now being released to the Public Records Office. The transcripts of these intercepted signals put the story of the 'Tirpitz' in a fascinating new perspective, not only in revealing how th e y h e l ped the British to locate 'Tirpitz' and attack her, but also how faulty appreciation of them led to the disastrous scattering of Convoy PQ 17 in the false belief that 'Tirpitz' was about to attack it. The 'Tirpitz' and her sister-ship 'B is ma r ck ' we re the largest and fastest European battleships ever built. They were also the last. After a brief operation in the Atlantic, the 'Bismarck' was destroyed by British forces, and Hitler, worried that 'Tirpitz' would suffer a similar fa te, d ete rm ine d that she should be stationed out of harm's way, in a strategic position in the Norwegian fjords. There she acted as a fleet-in-being, presenting a continuing threat to the covoys carrying vital British war supplies to northe rn R ussi a w hich ra n a gauntlet on every voyage. "In this second and final volume 'composed' by Archy, the literary cockroach, the wonderfully whimsical insect and his fractious feline friend Mehitabel, engage in misadventures large and small and comment with quirky accuracy on the common state of humanity. Previously unpublished in book form and literally recovered from a steamer trunk by editor Jeff Adams, these stories are the product of Don Ma r q u i s , a New York columnist and raconteur who was one of America's most popular humorists during the early 20th century. Ungrammatical as they may be, Archy's wry insights are a true delight, for, as he puts it, 'one advantage to being a coc kr oa ch i s th a t i see things from the under side'. From that unique perspective we follow the continuing saga of Archy, the Cockroach Detective, a spoof on the gumshoe genre in which the six-legged private eye encounters a raja, his chorus-gi rl har em, Bo ls hev is t tw ins, an Egyptologist, seven sister manicurists, and a set of bejeweled false teeth. Accompanied by the inspired drawings of cartoonist Ed Frascino, these new Archy tales are, Adams writes, 'classic American humor, as v ivi d an d am usin g t oday as t hey were decades ago'."
