373 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "The story of the Toronto General Hospital is intimagely and inseparably associated with the development of the city of Toronto and the support of its citizens. Dr. Crosbie traces the history of the Hospital from its founding in York, through its humble facilities on King Street, to the ornate Victorian structure on Gerrard, and finally to the great institution which today dominates the corner of College Street and University Avenue. Its early services to the victims of the War of 1812 and of the cholera epidemics of the nineteenth century, the problems of financing, the challenges of two world wars, and its relationship with the University and its medical schools are just a few of the factors governing the direction taken by the institution. Throughout this chronicle, the achievements of a distinguished body of medical staff in the fields of medical practice, research, and teaching are described in a context of contribution to the University and the city of Toronto, a well as to the international medical scene." 5 Falconer, Jonathan. Foreword by Murray Peden. STIRLING AT WAR.
Ian Allan, Shepperton, 1991, first edition.
128 pp, 4to (11 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0711020221 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, drawings. "Weaving his narrative around the detailed eyewitness accounts of aircrews, groundcrews and those who built the Stirling, (t he author) reveals the troubled life story of the Shorts' big bomber. Through the eyes of a factory worker at Queen's Island, Belfast, we witness the birth of one of the RAF's first four-engined 'heavies'. We climb the crew ladder, follow th e s k i p per up the long dark fuselage to the cockpit and fly with him and his crew on one of the first Stirling raids over Germany. Lie on your belly in the bomb aimer's position as the skipper dodges flak and fighters at low level: 'We crossed th e e ne my c oast at Wilhelmshaven and were soon flying at low level between two of the Friesian Islands - the guns on each island appeared to be firing horizontally or down at us.' Sit in on a top secret briefing for an SD Stirling crew at Tem psf or d, and fl y w ith them to a DZ 'somewhere in Occupied Europe' to deliver their 'Joe'. Freeze in the biting East Anglian wind with the groundcrews on dispersals as they try to change an exhaust manifold: 'The Bristol Hercules engines were su perb - the re w as v irtu ally nothing to leak from them. But it was a long way down to the ground if you slipped on the wings.' Fly in the greatest aerial armadas ever seen as you carry crack paratroops to Normandy on the eve of D-Day, or tow a lumbe rin g Ho rsa g lider thro ugh flak-peppered skies to Arnhem." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, tiny dint on bottom edge of rear board. 501 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. Inscribed on title page: "For John Watson, / with my very best wishes, / Peter Oliver". "As premier of Ontario from 1923 to 1930, G. Howard Ferguson was the most successful, the most colourful, and perhaps the ablest of Canadian politicians of his time. Largely as a result of his leadership, the Ontario Tories emerged from the debacle of their 1919 defeat to eliminate virtually all political opposition - and launch the Conservative dynasty in Ontario. Peter Oliver's study of Ferguson's life and times provides both a revealing picture of a political professional of driving ambition and rare talent and a commentary on a largely rural society dealing with the challenges of industrialization and urbanization." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine, previous owner's name stamp on free front endpaper, minor glue residue on endpapers, minor browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, light edge browning, one very small tear archivally taped some rubbing with color loss at bottom of spine.
