MORALE: A STUDY OF MEN AND COURAGE. THE SECOND SCOTTISH RIFLES AT THE BATTLE OF NEUVE CHAPELLE 1915., Baynes, John.
4 Baynes, John. MORALE: A STUDY OF MEN AND COURAGE. THE SECOND SCOTTISH RIFLES AT THE BATTLE OF NEUVE CHAPELLE 1915.
Cassell, London, 1967.
286 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Ex-library. B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "Morale is as important to a nation in peace as it is in war, on the factory floor and in an office as in a warship or a bomber's crew, in a trade union as in a regiment. In our complex, unstable times, it is vital that we should seek to understand more of morale, what it can attain and how it can be achieved. For this reason alone John Bayne's fascinating sociological study would be an inva luable contribution to the literature of an alarmingly neglected subject. But Major Baynes has a uique and rewarding approach. He has taken a sample community of proven morale and then dissected it tissue by tissue, examining each under t h e m i c r o s cope of his keenly analytical and lively mind. His 'sample' is the 2nd Scottish Rifles, a battalion of that magnificent professional Army with which Britain entered the First World War. At the Battle of Neuve Chapelle in March, 19 15 , w he n it w en t 'over the top' it was some 900 strong. Six days later the battalion marched out of the line, still a fighting, disciplined unit. It was 150 strong and was commanded by a second-lieutenant. What enabled those men to keep the ir sp ir it, t hei r t ena ci ty and dash in those awful six days, so graphically recreated here, was their morale. Major Baynes has interviewed the know survivors of the battle and analysed hundreds of books, reports and private papers pertinent to his 's ampl e'. He exa mine s t he social background of the officers and men, their service, their homes, their education, upbringing, beliefs and attitudes. With the advantage of hindsight, he has evaluated their inter-relationships, their loy alti es, and t he r ules and c onven tion s by which they lived. The result is a stimulating book, important in areas far removed from the bloody fields of Flanders." Ex-library copy with some of the usual stamps, old tape and pocket removal m arks , thr ee a reas o f lig ht da mpness marks on f ront board and hinge, free front endpaper missing, a few pages with dog-ear creases, five lines of text on page 92 have green hi-liter. Dust jacket is price clipped, has light edge wear/wrinkli ng, f ading to sp ine and some edges, label removal and t ape marks, several small tears - some taped. Good- reading copy only.

7 Coates, Ken and McGuinness, Fred. With Roger Newman. THE KEYSTONE PROVINCE; AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF MANITOBA ENTERPRISE.
Burlington, Ontario Windsor Publications 1988 0897812573 / 9780897812573 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
184 pp, 11 1/4" H. B&w and colour photographs, reproductions. "(The authors) describe Manitoba's beginnings as a fur trade empire under the Hudson's Bay Company. They depict the development of the province's resources and potential as a national priority when, in 1870, a very small Province of Manitoba was created to spearhead the development of a western agrarian empire. Working within a changing social and economic climate, entrepreneurs struggled to establish Winnipeg as the West's premier city, and situated that city as the hub of a transportation and distribution network that supported the province's heartland. Ranging forward, the authors' accounting of the province's role in agriculture, industry, hydro, mining, and tourism is given within the context of national and international forces. Roger Newman has prepared histories of selected Manitoba businesses and organizations whose contributions to the development of the Keystone Province should not go unrecorded." Minor wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling.

Some of these valorous airmen were from humble backgrounds and with limited education, others were collegiate men from wealthy families, but in the words of one senior officer they all had in common 'the guts of a lion'. B&w illustrations, 3 maps (2 double-page). "This volume contains nearly complete transcriptions of the extant journals kept by John Franklin during his expedition to the unknown northern coast of the North American continent in the years 1819 to 1822. Only a few abstracts and tables of observations from the extant journal books have been excluded, and they, for the most part, are available in the appendices to Franklin's published 'Narrative of a Journey to the Shores of the Polar Sea in the Years 1819, 20, 21, and 22'. The present volume also includes transcriptions of a selection of correspondence written during the preparation for and execution of Franklin's first expedition. While most of the letters included here were written by Franklin, some were written by other correspondents to Franklin. A few highly selective pieces were neither written nor recieved by Franklin, but bear special relevance to letters that Franklin wrote. The Introduction provides short biographies of some of the men involved, and then establishes an historical context in which to situate the 1819-22 expedition. The sources of the various documents are next identified, followed by an attempt to understand what brought about the deaths of 11 out of 20 men under Franklin's leadership." 239 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs, reproductions, maps. "In 1872, Irish-born, seventeen-year-old Henry Ross Halpin arrived in Fort Garry, Manitoba, to take up a position with the Hudson's Bay Company. His career took him from the shores of Hudson Bay, across the plains, and to the headwaters of the Mackenzie River. Throughout his life, he immersed himself in learning the traditions and culture of Canada's Native Peoples and ultimately became an Indian agent. At his death in 1930, he was described as 'one of the best acquainted with Indian tradition and legend in the west'. Halpin was catapulted onto the historical stage in 1885, being captured by rebel Cree and serving as a secretary/negotiator for Big Bear, the non-rebel Cree chief at the siege of Fort Pitt. Born into a family of journalists, he was a great storyteller and astute observer. His memoirs of his life in the fur trade and of his captivity, combined with his correspondence and annual reports to the Department of Indian Affairs, offer a rare glimpse of life during these turbulent times of change in the West." "Weaving his narrative around the detailed eyewitness accounts of aircrews, groundcrews and those who built the Stirling, (t he author) reveals the troubled life story of the Shorts' big bomber. Through the eyes of a factory worker at Queen's Island, Belfast, we witness the birth of one of the RAF's first four-engined 'heavies'. We climb the crew ladder, follow th e s k i p per up the long dark fuselage to the cockpit and fly with him and his crew on one of the first Stirling raids over Germany. Lie on your belly in the bomb aimer's position as the skipper dodges flak and fighters at low level: 'We crossed th e e ne my c oast at Wilhelmshaven and were soon flying at low level between two of the Friesian Islands - the guns on each island appeared to be firing horizontally or down at us.' Sit in on a top secret briefing for an SD Stirling crew at Tem psf or d, and fl y w ith them to a DZ 'somewhere in Occupied Europe' to deliver their 'Joe'. Freeze in the biting East Anglian wind with the groundcrews on dispersals as they try to change an exhaust manifold: 'The Bristol Hercules engines were su perb - the re w as v irtu ally nothing to leak from them. But it was a long way down to the ground if you slipped on the wings.' Fly in the greatest aerial armadas ever seen as you carry crack paratroops to Normandy on the eve of D-Day, or tow a lumbe rin g Ho rsa g lider thro ugh flak-peppered skies to Arnhem." 17 Gage, S.R. FORGOTTEN PLACES IN THE NORTH.
Mosaic, (Oakville, Ontario, 2001).
166 pp, 8vo, soft cover. B&w photos. "Across the broad expanse of Canada's North there are few physical reminders of the rich history of the land and its people. (This book) examines three rare cases where heritage structures have withstood the ravages of time and an unforgiving climate. York Factory was the key staging area of the Hudson's Bay Company for over two hundred years. From its construction in 1830, the 'Depot' warehouse held a wealth of trade goods that lured the trappers of the Northwest. Herschel Island, off the north coast of the Yukon, became the unlikely winter home to hundreds of Yankee whalers in the 1890s. The buildings of this abandoned settlement still remain. The Mid-Canada Line was an electronic Cold War bastion that stretched the length of Canada's 55th parallel. This national project stood against American ambition to the south and the Soviet threat from the north." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - minor rubbing to covers, tiny stain to fore-edge of textblock with slight migration into margin of a few pages, spine flat and uncreased. VG

19 Heming, Arthur. THE DRAMA OF THE FORESTS: ROMANCE AND ADVENTURE.
Toronto S.B. Gundy 1924 First Canadian Edition. Hard Cover Good+ No Jacket Arthur Heming.
324 pp, 7 3/4" H. 14 colour plates, including frontispiece (collated). "(I) travelled twenty-three times through various parts of the vast northern woods, between Maine and Alaska, and covered thousands upon thousands of miles by canoe, pack-train, snowshoes, bateau, dog-train, buck-board, timber-raft, prairie-schooner, lumber-wagon, and 'alligator'. (B)ack again I went at all seasons of the year to encamp in that great timber-land that sweeps from the Atlantic to the Pacific. thus it has taken me thirty-three years to gather the information this volume contains - (but) I wish to explain that in compliance with the wishes of the leading actors - who actually lived their parts of this story - fictitious names have been given to the principal characters and to the principal trading posts, lakes, and rivers herein depicted. Furthermore, in order to give the reader a more interesting, complete, and faithful description of the daily and the yearly life of the forest dwellers as I have observed it, I have taken the liberty of weaving together the more interesting facts I have gathered - both first- and second-hand - into one continuous narrative as though it all happened in a single year. And in order to retain all the primitive local colour, the unique costumes, and the fascinating romance of the fur-trade days as I witnessed them in my twenties - though much of the life has already passed away - the scene is set to represent a certain year in the early (1890s)." Separation between some page gatherings (mainly at illustration locations) - pages are firm in binding, very slight bump at top corner of boards, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor shelf soiling on bottom of text block, three very small stains on top of text block, minor rubbing on boards. Book is protected in a stiff mylar sleeve.
