JUNO: CANADIANS AT D-DAY, JUNE 6, 1944., Barris, Ted. Foreword by John Keegan.
2 Barris, Ted. Foreword by John Keegan. JUNO: CANADIANS AT D-DAY, JUNE 6, 1944.
Thomas Allen, Toronto, 2004.
311 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0887621333 Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "On June 6, 1944, nearly 15,000 Canadians - at sea, in the air, and on the ground - joined the long-anticipated D-Day inva sion of Nazi-occupied Europe on the Normandy beaches. The piece of ground on which the Canadian fought so hard against heavily armed and entrenched German troops was code-named 'Juno'. On that day, the Canadians fought their way farther inland t h a n any other Allied troops. For Canada, this was an extraordinary moment of bravery, sacrifice, and coming of age in the nation's history....(This book) tells the story of Juno in the voices of the men who were there - young farmers from Manit ob a an d Saskatchewan, fresh-faced high-school graduates from Ontario, workers from mines and factories in the Maritimes, and eager recruits from Quebec and Newfoundland....In what might be described as 'Canada's longest day', we join the action ho ur by ho ur, minute by minute. We take to the skies with the airmen who flew fighters and bombers over the beaches. We ply the Channel with the sailors who swept the waters of German mines and navigated landing craft to the French coast line . We go in wit h troops who leapt off those craft into waters bristling with booby-trapped obstacles and raked by machinegun fire to establish a foothold on Juno Beach. Ted Barris has interviewed hundreds of veterans to piece together one of Canada's pro udes t day s , and one of the most significant battles of our time." THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS SOCIAL HISTORY OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR., Bishop, James. Foreword by Lord Blake.
3 Bishop, James. Foreword by Lord Blake. THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS SOCIAL HISTORY OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR.
London Angus & Robertson 1982 0207148260 / 9780207148262 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
144 pp, 10 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w reproductions of photographs, drawings, advertisements. "The First World War, which claimed the lives of so many men on the battlefields of the Western Front, also profoundly affected the character and everyday life of the nation at home. It was the first 'total war' and the whole country contributed to the war effort. The unrelenting demands of the trenches eventually forced the Government to introduce conscription while, for those left behind, the state intervened more and more in the lives of its citizens. Hardships increased: food and fuel were in very short supply and rationing had to be imposed in 1916. The civilian population was also directly involved in the hostilities with the bombing raids of zeppelins and aeroplanes. But the war did bring some changes for the better. The salaried classes grew, working conditions improved and the war also helped liberate women who replaced men in factories and public services, and joined the armed forces. When the armistice finally came, in November 1918, Lloyd George promised 'a fit country for heroes to live in' - though the reality proved to be less Utopian. The Illustrated London News continued to publish throughout the First World War and was supplemented by The Illustrated War News. These magazines provided a vivid pictorial chronicle of contemporary events and enable us, today, to enter into the spirit of a bygone era. (The author) has written a fascinating and fully-documented account of these momentous years, complemented by over 200 pictures from the original issues." Light edge wear to boards. Dust jacket has one tiny edge tear, light foxing at top & bottom inside edges, very light edge wrinkling, a few tiny dents and faint line indentations on front panel.

CHINA REVISITED, AFTER FORTY-TWO YEARS., Chiang Yee. (The Silent Traveller.)
5 Chiang Yee. (The Silent Traveller.) CHINA REVISITED, AFTER FORTY-TWO YEARS.
New York W.W. Norton 1977 03930879143 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Chiang Yee.
180 pp, 9 1/2" H. Illustrated throughout with the author's b&w drawings & calligraphy. "In 1933, Chiang Yee, then the governor of a district in China, was forced to leave his homeland after an argument with a warlord. The China he left was an unhealthy country: a weak central government unable to control the power of the warlords; a deteriorating economic condition; a reputation for corruption based on an ill-defined and unsatisfactory land-tax system; widespread illiteracy and famine. In 1975, after an absence of forty-two years, he returned to China. In this book he tells of his travels and records his impressions of the new China as compared to the China he left. In addition, his two grown daughters, who, along with their mother, remained in China, provide another perspective on China's progress. As Mr. Chiang travels through China, he tells of his visits to both well-known and less familiar landmarks; he describes the communes and factories of light industry which have been built in the last twenty-five years. He attends the May First celebration - the important festival of labor. But, above all, he contrasts the backwards country he left with the brand-new independent nation that has been emerging over the last twenty-five years. He points with pride to the accomplishments: 800 million Chinese living and working together in a united spirit; the feeling of peace and prosperity; no unemployment; sufficient food for all; great technical, scientific, and educational advances; increased literacy; universal medicare; and vast improvements in the status of women." Small faint scuff at top of fore-edge of text block, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket is price clipped, has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, some light waviness on front panel, very light browning - mainly at edges, small light stain at top edge of spine, two line indentations across spine, protected in a mylar sleeve.

David McKay, New York, 1977, book club edition.
341 pp, 8vo (8 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, map. "(D)escribes moment by moment (the) August 17, 1943 raid as well as the second Schweinfurt mission, October 14, 1943 - the two most savage battles in the history of air warf are. It also describes day by day the lives and deaths of the men on both sides who faced each other not only in these but in other epic battles. Yet (this) is more than the story of the two famous Schweinfurt missions: it is also the story o f t h e development of the U.S. 8th Air Force in England, and the most crucial combat tests of the American daylight precision bombing strategy. Citing hundreds of previously unpublished documents, the book reveals for the first time the full s tr ug g le t o establish this daring American strategy against the conviction of many authoritative people that it would not work. These people included British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, all his air experts, and many generals and admiral s in the U .S. Ar my and Navy....American and British strategists were arguing this issue when, in February, 1942, Brig, Gen. Ira C. Eaker and his staff arrived in England to create the 8th Bomber Command. When Eaker launched the first great Sch we inf urt mis sion eig hte en months later, the matter was still undecided. Could the B-17s battle their way through the waves of Luftwaffe fighters and destroy the Schweinfurt factories? Or would the bombers be turned back, exposing the America n A ir F orce s st rateg y as a di smal failure? This was the issue that produced the crucial decision over Schweinfurt." 8 Donegan, Rosemary. Introduction by Rick Salutin. SPADINA AVENUE
Vancouver Douglas & McIntyre 1985 0888944721 / 9780888944726 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
192 pp, 11 1/2" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "Spadina has been the starting point for wave after wave of new Canadian immigrants. Once the main focus for Jewish culture and life in Toronto, the street became a centre of commerce and saw intense political activity during the thirties and forties. Now the Jewish garment factories overlook bustling Chinese sidewalk markets. Greek cafes jostle with delicatessens and Szechuan restaurants. Contemporary art and music thrive amidst this colourful ethnic diversity. Studios and alternative galleries crowd abandoned warehouse space above street level, and all along the street, such classic watering holes as Grossman's, the El Macombo, the Paramount and the Silver Dollar dispense entertainment for tastes that run from black and new wave music to strippers. (This book) presents a collection of photographs and related texts ranging from the years when the street was a tree-lined boulevard, right through to today, when the Queen Street art scene and a rapidly expanding Chinatown are transforming Spadina. Drawing on his own Jewish roots and family history, Rick Salutin provides a very personal introduction that demonstrates how and why Spadina is unique, why it has become so important to those whose lives it has intersected. Organized to reflect and even recreate the Spadina experience, (it) takes the reader up the street starting at the lakeshore and ending at Bloor Street." Huts, crops, animals, and livelihood disappeared overnight, and Sa Tu Sai, her mother, her father, and her three brothers were stranded in a leaky old houseboat. And that night, while they were floating slowly down the river, Sa Tu Sai rescued a small baby, whom she named Tu Ku. The subsequent adventures of Sa Tu Sai and Tu Ku, her adopted brother (involving the Japanese invasion of China), are varied and exciting, and Sa Tu Sai's devotion and bravery will not soon be forgotten by the reader. 12 Huxley, Aldous. Bradshaw, David, ed. THE HIDDEN HUXLEY: CONTEMPT AND COMPASSION FOR THE MASSES 1920-36.
Faber and Faber, London, (1994), Ist printing.
255 pp, 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. "...at the time (Huxley) wrote his classic novel (Brave New World), (he) was a proponent of eugenics and an outspoken champion of anti-democratic government. For the past sixty years this Huxley has remained entirely unknown. 'The Hidden Huxley' presents a selection of his hitherto undocumented articles and broadcasts of this period. They reveal a complex figure, who was both typical of his era in his abhorrence of mass civilisation, and u n i q u e i n t h at his contempt gradually gave way to a sympathetic affinity with ordinary men and women. By 1937, when Huxley left Europe for the United States, the cultural elitist had been firmly displaced by the legendary humanist. Huxley' s fa sc in at i ng p r og re ss from a scourge of the masses to their compassionate spokesman - a volte-face which took him down coalmines, into factories and to a New Forest camp for the unemployed - is here exposed for the first time." Woodbridge, Suffolk Antique Collectors' Club 1999 1851492585 / 9781851492589 Reprint Hard Cover Fine Very Good
168 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H). Colour photographs. "In the 18th century, artists and potters were not slow to reflect in models the interest of the time in identifying and selectively breeding individual types of dog, and continental and home-based factories started to produce realistic examples of both sporting and pampered dogs. Following Landseer's painting of 1836 of Queen Victoria's favourite dog, the King Charles Spaniel Dash, the potters of Staffordshire were not slow to seize the opportunity to turn Dash into a national icon. Pairs of spaniels were portrayed in clay in enormous quantities, followed soon after by many other breeds. The modellers are usually anonymous, but the simple hand-painted decoration, often done by children, gives each piece an individuality and vitality, and as (this) charming book shows, these dogs have an enduring quality that makes them as endearing today as they were when first made."
