THE SOUTH WALES BORDERERS (THE 24tH REGIMENT OF FOOT). FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES., Adams, Jack. Introduction by Lt.-General Sir Brian Horrocks.
1 Adams, Jack. Introduction by Lt.-General Sir Brian Horrocks. THE SOUTH WALES BORDERERS (THE 24tH REGIMENT OF FOOT). FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES.
Hamish Hamilton, London, (1968), first edition.
157 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations, march. "A Regiment forms a corporate body which takes on a life of its own, often rising above the weaknesses and inadequacies of its human fabric to perform seemingly superhuman deeds such as the 'Immortal Stand' of the 24th Foot at Rorke's Drift during the Zulu War...Since their birth as Dering's Regiment in March 1689, the 24th (which in 1881 became the South Wales Borderers) have participated in nearly all the large and small wars of the past 279 years from Cartagena in South America to Narvik in Arctic Norway. From Saratoga, in America's war of Independence, to Tsingtao in the Far East, where they gained a battle honour unique in the British Army. The Ist Battalion, over which the shadow of amalgamation now lies, has recently returned from an operational tour of Aden. There they proved that the courage and steadfastness of the Regiment and of its individual sons is as strong as ever. This book is a fitting tribute to them and to one of the greatest Regiments of all time." Faint cigarette odor, light browning to edges of pages/textblock, very light paper pull a top of rear endpapers, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket is price clipped, has very light browning at edges, light edge wrinkling, two very small closed tears, small ghost sticker mark on front flap, very light rubbing. VG/VG-

A PROSPECT OF ASHRIDGE., Coult, Douglas.
7 Coult, Douglas. A PROSPECT OF ASHRIDGE.
Phillimore, London, 1980.
262 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850333601 Colour and b&w plates. "Founded as the College of Bonhommes, an order of Augustinian canons, in 1283, Ashridge is again a College today, housing the world-renowned Management Co llege, so that after 700 years the wheel has turned full circle. After the monastic period, Henry VIII used Ashridge as an occasional residence for his children, when it provided a backcloth to the uncertainties of their upbringing. The p r o p e r t y p assed to the Princess Elizabeth at her father's death and during Mary's reign must have been the scene of both drama and danger. After its period as a royal residence the Egerton family (Earls and Dukes of Bridgewater) lived at Ash ri dg e fo r se ve r al generations, among them Sir Thomas, Lord Chancellor to James I, the 3rd Duke, known as 'the Canal Duke', and the 7th Earl, who replaced the crumbling monastic buildings with the present fabric. The latter's controversial wil l l ed to th e est ate p ass ing to the earls Brownlow. Later, under the 3rd Earl and his beautiful Countess, Adelaide, Ashridge achieved an elegance of great distinction. After more than three centuries as a home, the estate was sold in the 192 0s a nd bec ame an edu cati ona l fo undation, first as Bonar Law College and then as the present Management College. This vivid and readable account is the first full-length study of the estate for over 150 years; and through his extensive use of cont emp orar y re cor ds an d som e ne w arc hival material the author's prospect of Ashridge has become more than purely local history. Personalities are brought to life against the background of the building in a way that will appeal to a wide circle of reade rs. A pi ece of Chilt ern h istory that often touches on national affairs, this work will be welcomed by many who know and use the Ashridge of today." Minor wrinkle at bottom of spine, tiny faint stain on fore-edge of textblock, faint w ater mark a t bo ttom corner of fron t boar d. Dus t jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing. Very Good/Very Good

THE MEANING OF PUCK: HOW HOCKEY EXPLAINS MODERN CANADA., Dowbiggin, Bruce.
9 Dowbiggin, Bruce. THE MEANING OF PUCK: HOW HOCKEY EXPLAINS MODERN CANADA.
Key Porter, Toronto, 2008, first edition.
232 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 9781554700417 "In a series of essays that is a road trip across the nation's cultural landscape, (Dowbiggin) shows how the national passion for hockey reflects - or deflects - the issues of globalization, regionalism, anti-Americanism, militarism, violence, racism and greed. Why are Canadians, for instance, such strenuous advocates of pacifism and non-militarism around the world while simultaneously embracing - and promoting - the world's most vicious and violent brand of hockey? As the legion of apologists for Todd Bertuzzi's thuggish play dramatize, it's not the Americans who popularize violence in hockey. It's us. Dowbiggen tries to come to terms with the absurd hero worship of The Great One. Or why Canadians so smugly spoof American ignorance while making a 'cultural' icon of Don Cherry. Is it because in a nation without rules or standards he still stands for something, however distasteful? (He) conducts an autopsy on the essentially permanent futility of the Toronto Maple Leafs and shows how the team's declining fortunes mirror the shift in power and influence from Ontario to the West, particularly Alberta. As fans outside Ontario chafe at the Toronto- centrism of 'Hockey Night in Canada', they seek a new locus of hockey influence. Dowbiggin explores questions such as: Why the Vancouver Canucks are the new frontier? What do you mean the Montreal Canadiens are owned by an American? Why is hockey such a safe place for characters such as Alan Eagleson, Graham James and David Frost to hide? And why is it so hard to get them out once they've attached themselves to power? Most of all: Why does the sniff of the Canadian jock have such a hypnotic effect on our culture? 'The Meaning of Puck' is a funny, acidic, irreverent, argumentative and often infuriating but always thought-provoking look into the fabric of a nation straining to keep old traditions alive and incorporate new national myths." 318 pp, 9 1/4" H. "(T)he culmination of the writing career of a man who has struggled all his life against social injustice and irrelevant religious orthodoxies. This book is more than the ecumenical discuss-ion of sex-related issues from a minister's point of view; it is a candid commentary on our time - a time of sexual revolution and human turmoil when old values are questioned and new answers must be found. By analyzing the historical and social aspects of sex, sexuality and sexism and the role of the clergy within the framework of the Judeo-Christian tradition, the author has woven his thoughts into a colorful fabric; his wisdom, wit and candor, combined with his superb literary skills, shine through on every page. Collins / Auckland City Council, Auckland, 1973, first edition.
231 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "Winner of the $2,000 Auckland City Centennial Fiction Contest, 'Follow, Follow' must rank as one of the most impressive novels published in New Zealand since the war. In its delicate exploration of family relationships, its sensitive probing of the heart of a woman and its mature treatment of sex, it is the work of an imagination under strict artistic control....With subtlety and insight, Alice Glenday shows a hidden crime weighing upon a f amily and yet somehow being drawn into the texture of daily living. The artistry of (this book) is outstanding, with its deceptively placid opening contributing to the final effect, with believable characters who behave as in life rather t h a n i n f i ction, and with a New Zealand atmosphere of beach and cliff which is unobtrusively part of the entire fabric. Alice Glenday's story-telling gifts enable her to make this very moving novel a most successful fusion of a compulsive sto ry w it h d ee p a nd sympathetic human observation." 14 Grey, Ian. PETER THE GREAT: EMPEROR OF ALL RUSSIA.
Philadelphia J.B. Lippincott 1960 Second Printing Hard Cover Very Good Good-
505 pp, 8 1/2" H. "The first modern Russian was Peter the Great. In this enthralling biography of that remarkable, revolutionary ruler, Ian Grey paints a superbly illuminating portrait - clean, clear, objective, without malice or sentimentality. Here we have, life-size, not only the great Tsar, but the man who fell in love with a peasant girl and made her his empress; the father who was betrayed by his son; the roisterer who was a creative genius; the physical giant who carried all his life the scars of a childhood terror; the soldier, sailor, laborer, daring innovator, architect of a nation. Tossing aside all the pomp and holiness that traditionally surrounded a tsar, Peter ripped apart the fabric of Russian life and, almost singlehandedly, made his country into a modern Western power." "Forming originally a part of the state of Virginia, Kentucky was peopled la rgely from Virginia and nearby colonies; thus the economic system, the social fabric and the cultural outlook of Kentucky resembles these features of life in the Old Dominion. Bringing with them a love of classic architecture engendered by as s o c i a t ion with the great houses in the valleys of the James and the Potomac, it is no surprise to discover that a definite classic spirit premeates the more formal types of architecture in Kentucky. In the early pioneer period, of necessity, r ec ou rs e wa s had to primitive forms. Beginning with the log cabin with its 'wattle-and-daub' chimney, architectural expression in Kentucky passed through successive improvements, culminating eventually in the great classic-porticoed brick mansio ns whi ch to th is day lend so much charm to the countryside. Architecture in Kentucky parallels the career of architecture upon our Atlantic seaboard. There is this difference, however, that while architecture in Kentucky reflects most of the v ogu es a nd fas hion s o f the seaboard forms, it records these changes somewhat belatedly. That is to say a style or a fashion well known in the maritime states will often not make its appearance in Kentucky for from ten to thirty years. Once acc lima ted, how ever , suc h vo gues are as likely to persist here as in other areas of America." Previous owner's bookplate on front pastedown, heavy fading to color at top edge of boards, light fading to color on spine.
