RHODESIAN PERSPECTIVE., Bull, Theodore, editor.
1 Bull, Theodore, editor. RHODESIAN PERSPECTIVE.
Michael Joseph, London, 1967, first edition.
184 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers, fold-out map showing land apportionment in 1965. "The first and major portion of this book consists of a factual account of some of the more important political, social and economic developments in Britain's colony of Southern Rhodesia from the time of the first European occupation to the present day. It draws on historical records, official reports and government statements to explain what the Land Apportionment Act is, why it was introduced, and what its practical effects are; to examine local government, the educational systems, and economic development in urban and rural areas; to analyse the effect which some of the past and present legislation has on the living a n d working conditions of black and white Rhodesians; and, in the process, to illustrate the political attitudes of Europeans and Africans, and the separate development of the racial communities. (It) collates much of the kind of factual material w hi ch used to appear regularly in the Salisbury journal, the 'Central African Examiner', before it ceased publication. UDI and the censorship imposed under the Emergency regulations in November, 1965, resulted in the 'Examiner's' December issue bei ng heavily cut - about half the material submitted for censorship was banned. The journal's publishing company launched a court case to challenge the legality of censorship and so, by implication, of the Rhodesian regime, but this was unsuccessful and the December 1965 issue was therefore (its) last. The factual material in this book was prepared by former contributors to the 'Examiner' and edited by Theodore Bull, the sponsor and former editor of the journal. His own personal assessment o f Br itish policy on Rhodesia, before and since UDI, and the likely outcome of the present deadlock, forms the second part of the book. His conclusions are controversial, and readers of widely differing political views could be equally shocked by t hem, but they may stimulate a healthy reassessment of attitude towards the whole unhappy Rhodesian situation." Previous owner's place, date and signature on free front endpaper; slight bump at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrink ling, slight browning on spine and flap-folds, very light rubbing. Very Good/Very Good-

184 pp, 8 1/2" H. "Mr. Bull, editor of the 'Central African Examiner' (one of Salisbury's leading magazines before it ceased publication late in 1965 as a result of rigid censorship by the Rhodesian government), presents the first authoritative explanation of the Rhodesian situation. Most of his book is a factual account of the important political, social, and economic changes in Britain's colony from the first European settlement to the present day (1967), with particular attention to the separate develop-ment of the racial communities. The second part of the book is an assessment of British policy before and after Rhodesia's Universal Declaration, and the likely outcome of the present deadlock." At age twenty-two he was a doctor of aerophysics, the youngest doctoral graduate of the University of Toronto. On March 22, 1990, at the age of sixty-two, he was dead; gunned down at the door of his Brussels apartment by 'a person or persons not currently known to the authorit i e s ' , a ccording to Belgian police. His murder remains unsolved, although theories abound: Iraq, another Arab nation, the C.I.A., Canada, and Israel's dreaded Mossad. During the intervening forty years, Bull did pioneering work in artillery t ec hn ol og y, le ading to a two-decade-long relationship with the U.S. Department of Defense; developed a system for launching projectiles into space using a giant cannon; became an arms manufacturer and dealer; spent time in an American federal p ris on for vo ila t ing the Arms Export Control Act and the United Nations arms embargo against South Africa; and became involved in Iraq's Project Babylon, the so-called Super Gun. This latter endeavor probably cost him his life....(This book lo oks) at Bul l's fami ly bac kground, his friends and colleagues; (attempts) to explain the technology involved in his military developments; and to show the effects of his work on events in Canada and throughout the world." A HISTORY OF THE WORLD IN 6 GLASSES., Standage, Tom.
12 Standage, Tom. A HISTORY OF THE WORLD IN 6 GLASSES.
Doubleday Canada, n.p., 2005, first Canadian edition.
311 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0385660863 "As Tom Standage relates with authority and charm, six (drinks) have had a surprisingly pervasive influence on the course of history during pivotal epochs, from humankind's adoptio n of agriculture and the birth of cities to the advent of globalization. (This book) presents an original, well-documented vision of world history, telling the story of humanity from the Stone Age to the twenty-first century through the lens of be e r , wine, spirits, coffee, tea and cola. Beer, which originated in the Fertile Crescent, was so important to the first civilizations of Mesopotamia and Egypt that it was used to pay wages. The golden age of ancient Greece was also the age of win e, w hich became the main export of Greece's vast seaborne trade. Spirits such as brandy and rum fortified seamen on long voyages during the Age of Exploration and oiled the pernicious slave trade. Although coffee originated in the Arab world, it st oke d revolutionary thought in Europe during the Age of Reason, when coffee-houses became centers of intellectual exchange. And hundreds of years after the Chinese began drinking tea, the beverage became so popular in Britain that it started to dic tate British foreign policy at the height of the Empire. Carbonated drinks were invented in Europe in the late eighteenth century, but became a twentieth century phenomenon, with Coca-Cola becoming the leading symbol of globalization. For To m Sta ndage , each drink is a catalyst for advancing culture, through which he demonstrates the intricate interplay of different civilizations." A number of small genealogical tables are provided. Export edition dust jacket with no price on flap (designed so each receiving country could price the book according to their currency). "The first of the poems in this book is the unpublished 'Lay of the Children of Hurin', (Tolkien's) early but most sustained work in the ancient English metre, intended to narrate on a grand scale the tragedy of Turin Turambar. It was left incomplete when only the earlier part of the story had ben told, but not before the killing by Turin of Beleg his friend had been powerfully recounted and a unique description of the great redoubt of Nar-gothrond had been given. (This) was supplanted by the 'Lay of Leithian' 'Release from Bondage', in which another major legend of the Elder Days received poetic form, in this case in rhyme. The chief source of the short prose tale of Beren and Luthien in 'The Silmarillion', this too was left incomplete, but the whole Quest of the Silmaril is told, and the poem only breaks off after the encounter with Morgoth in his subterranean fortress. Many years later, when 'The Lord of the Rings' was finished, Tolkien returned to the 'Lay of Leithian' and started on a new version from the beginning; this is also given (here). Accompanying the poems are commentaries on the evolution of the history of the Elder Days, which was much developed during the years of the composition of the two Lays. Also included is the notable criticism in detail of the 'Lay of Leithian' by C.S. Lewis, who read the poem in 1929." There is a black remainder mark on bottom edge of the textblock, positioned against the spine, so not as noticeable as in many cases, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, minor rubbing on rear panel.

MAGNUS VOLK OF BRIGHTON., Volk, Conrad.
14 Volk, Conrad. MAGNUS VOLK OF BRIGHTON.
Phillimore, London, (1971), first edition.
240 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates. "Born in Brighton in 1851, Magnus Volk was a true pioneer of electrical engineering. While still in his early twenties he was employing a dozen or more workpeople, making a simple telegraph set which sold all over the world. In 1879, when he married, his house was the first in Brighton to have electric lighting...It was in 1883 that he built his original little railway in Great Britain. This was the start of a long struggle against both man and nature; but Magnus reacted typically to opposition, and extended the line - twice. Not content with this, he built another railway further east - a truly fantastic conception, nick-named 'Daddy-Long-Legs'. The book tells the extraordinary story of the electric motor-car he made; of the order he received for another like it from the Sultan of Turkey - surely the earliest export order for a car ever to reach this country; and of his visit to Constantinople to deliver it in person. Then there were the telephone exchanges, the electric launches, the submarine mines, the X-Ray equipment...and still the list could be lengthened. Local and family history, topography, Victoriana, engineering archives, the history of motoring and aviation - there is plenty here, in both text and illustration, for all whose interests lie expecially in these fields; while for the general reader there is the story of a whole - written simply and not without humour; a record of endeavour, of dogged tenacity in the face of relentless opposition and ill-fortune. A study, in short, of a very remarkable man." Slight bump at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling, has very light rubbing, and is price clipped. VG +/VG
