4 Bergstein, Rachelle. WOMEN FROM THE ANKLE DOWN: THE STORY OF SHOES AND HOW THEY DEFINE US.
New York Harper 2012 0061969613 / 9780061969614 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Nami Matsuo Scott.
284 pp, 9 1/4" H. Small b&w illustrations. "What is it about a pair of shoes that so enchants women of all ages, demographics, political affiliations, and style tribes? Part social history, part fashion record, part pop-culture celebration, (this book) seeks to answer that question as it unfolds the story of shoes in the twentieth century. The tale begins in the rural village of Bonito, Italy, with a visionary young shoe-maker named Salvatore Ferragamo and ends in New York City with a fictional socialite and trend-setter named Carrie Bradshaw. Along the way it stops in Hollywood, where Judy Garland first slipped on her ruby slippers; New Jersey, where Nancy Sinatra heard something special in a song about boots; and the streets of Manhattan, where a transit-worker strike propelled women to step into cutting-edge athletic shoes. Beginnng with the well-heeled suffragettes in the 1910s, women have fought for greater freedom and mobility, a struggle that exploded in the 1960s with the women's liberation move-ment and culminated in the new millenium with our devotion to personal choice. Featuring interviews with designers, historians, and cultural experts, and a cast of real-life characters, from Marilyn Monroe to Jane Fonda, from Gwen Stefani to Manolo Blahnik, (it) is a lively, compelling look at the evolution of modern woman and the fashion that reflects - and has shaped - their lives." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine - also tiny tear at top of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling at top of hinges, minor rubbing.

9 Chapman, Eddie. Foreword by Frank Owen. THE REAL EDDIE CHAPMAN STORY.
London Tandem Mass Market Paperback Good
253 pp, 7 1/8" H. c1966. In 1940, safecracker Eddie Chapman offered his services to the German High Command as a spy. His first mission was to blow up the de Havilland works in Hatfield. "What is now revealed for the first time is that Chapman had immediately upon landing made contact with senior officials of the Air Ministry who listened with stunned silence to his story. Shortly after, a German reconnaissance plane which was allowed over to photograph the results of his mssion, reported that the buildings were in ruins and smoke was still rising. At Hatfield, the camouflage experts quietly congratulated themselves on having made it look as though an explosives expert had been at work! Chapman was working for his own country at the risk of his life. Soon after he was shipped back to Germany through Lisbon, where Hitler, grateful for the blow struck against England, awarded him the Iron Cross. For two years, Chapman, behaving like a hero of the Third Reich, spied on the Germans and constantly fed information back to British Intelligence, before being parachuted in for a second time to report on the range of the V-bombs. His true story makes incredible reading." Rear cover advertises the movie "Triple Cross", starring Christopher Plummer as Eddie Chapman and Yul Brynner as Colonel von Grunen. "(D)escribes moment by moment (the) August 17, 1943 raid as well as the second Schweinfurt mission, October 14, 1943 - the two most savage battles in the history of air warf are. It also describes day by day the lives and deaths of the men on both sides who faced each other not only in these but in other epic battles. Yet (this) is more than the story of the two famous Schweinfurt missions: it is also the story o f t h e development of the U.S. 8th Air Force in England, and the most crucial combat tests of the American daylight precision bombing strategy. Citing hundreds of previously unpublished documents, the book reveals for the first time the full s tr ug g le t o establish this daring American strategy against the conviction of many authoritative people that it would not work. These people included British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, all his air experts, and many generals and admiral s in the U .S. Ar my and Navy....American and British strategists were arguing this issue when, in February, 1942, Brig, Gen. Ira C. Eaker and his staff arrived in England to create the 8th Bomber Command. When Eaker launched the first great Sch we inf urt mis sion eig hte en months later, the matter was still undecided. Could the B-17s battle their way through the waves of Luftwaffe fighters and destroy the Schweinfurt factories? Or would the bombers be turned back, exposing the America n A ir F orce s st rateg y as a di smal failure? This was the issue that produced the crucial decision over Schweinfurt." 198 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0891410821 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "The heroism of William Darby and his Rangers in World War II has become legend. Experts at amphibious landings, night attacks, and clos e combat, they led the assaulting troops in the initial North Africa landings, fought in Tunisia, landed through concentrated hell at Gela, and were in on the final kill at Messina. At Sorrento they stood off forces that outnumbered them by a t l e a s t eight to one, and they spearheaded the desperate struggle at Anzio. This is Darby's own story of those climactic days, as dictated, just a few months before his death, to his friend General William H. Baumer. Baumer has added backgr ou nd in fo rm at ion about the war and on Darby's life, plus a summary of the exploits of other Ranger units. Darby was a combat leader in the highest tradition of the United States Army - a forceful, charismatic man who inspired loyalty and in t urn ga v e l oya lty to his troops. Compiled by the directors of Prague's National Museum and National Gallery, this important and eye-filling work is a rich cornucopia which art historians, students of central Europe, and travelers to the historic city may sample with profit and pleasure. Itself an art treasure with its ancient buildings, historic monuments, and panoramic views, 'the city of a hundred towers' is home to notable collections of paintings, drawings, sculpture, and objects d'art dating from Charles IV and even earlier. Reflecting Prague's position at the heart of Europe along centuries-old trade routes, these collections encompass the continent's many schools of art, architecture, and handicrafts and repre-sent a distillation of Prague's turbulent thousand-year history. Modern scholarship, including some extraordinary scholarly detective work on the Prague Castle Gallery collection, has uncovered, restored, and made available to experts and public alike many little-known treasures. Equally impressive are collections of early art, coins, astronomical instruments, and Bohemian and modern Czechoslovak glass and porcelain. History of church and state can be glimpsed in the art of stone-cutters, goldsmith and silversmiths, weavers and embroiderers, and masters of illuminated manu-scripts." 307 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). "On average, people squander forty days annually compensating for things they've forgotten. Joshua Foer used to be one of those people. But after a year of memory training, he found himself in the finals of the U.S. Memory Championship. Even more important, he found a vital truth we too often forget: In every way that matters, we are the sum of our memories. (This book) draws on cutting-edge research, a surprising cultural history of memory, and venerable tricks of the mentalist's trade to transform our understanding of human remembering. Under the tutelage of top 'mental athletes', Foer learns ancient techniques once employed by Cicero to memorize his speeches and by medieval scholars to memorize entire books. Using methods that have been largely forgotten, he discovers that we can all dramatically improve our memories." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Toronto HarperCollins 1991 0002158426 / 9780002158428 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
408 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "The stunning defeat of David Peterson's powerful Liberal government on September 6, 1990 broke many of the old rules for Canadian elections - and provided the first glimpse of how future elections will be fought. At the center of the story: Liberal leader David Peterson. Young, handsome and rich, he embodied the glory years of the 1980s when Yuppies, BMWs and image politics ruled. His decision to 'go early', to call an election only three years into his mandate, set the wheels in motion. His campaign attracts some of Canada's leading political players: campaign chair Kathy Robinson, whose pivotal position becomes a hotseat as the Liberal slide begins; former Trudeau pollster Martin Goldfarb, anxious to keep a Liberal government in power; David MacNaughton, Goldfarb critic and rival; Bob Nixon, the tough and respected treasurer faced with scuttling his balanced budget in a last-ditch vote-buying attempt; aide Vince Borg, Peterson's long-time friend, who tries to protect the premier from protesters and Liberals alike. These key players and an army of policy experts, strategists, party members, candidates and reporters tangle and clash in the race for power. (The) gripping account of how the Peterson Liberals did not anticipate or prepare for the new trends emerging in Canada's electoral process: the increasing power of special-interest groups, campaign strategies that attack incumbents without offering alternatives, negative advertising, the critical importance of perceptions and the media, an electorate with declining party allegiances and the rise of non-traditional parties. It's also the reavealing tale of how Ontario's New Democratic and Progressive Conservative parties ran campaigns that became a perfect match for the volatile mood of voters." New York Philosophical Library 1953 Second Impression. Hard Cover Good Good J.W. Wood and R.A. Smith.
205 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w photographs, drawings, tables. "Here, described with enthusiasm and authority, is not only the whole history of rocket development from the days of the first discovery of an explosive mixture before the birth of Christ, but also the latest information on the harnessing of the tremendous new propellants available today, which may soon make journeys into space a commonplace of human life. Both (authors) are technical experts in their own fields. While their working hours are concerned with terrestrial problems, their scientific curiosity and knowledge are also beamed into the outer reaches of the Ether. They have accordingly produced a series of blueprints for the construction of an artificial satellite freely revolving in its own orbit around the Earth, and for the great liners which will take off from it on their flashing journeys to starry destinations in our own solar system and even, perhaps, beyond. There are nearly 100 (illustrations): historical records of early experiments, magnificent modern photographs of the latest achievements, and in addition a series of exciting drawings, specially made for the book, of space stations and space ships, which not only fire the imagination, but are precise in every detail." Throughout history, what has hap pened to states that have developed and effectively used these covert instruments - and to those that have not? What is needed to maintain effective covert capabilities? Roy Godson, one of the country's foremost experts on intelligence, u n t a n g l e s fact from fiction and provides often surprising answers to these provocative questions. Drawing on scholarly literature, broad-ranging contacts and discussions with foreign intelligence services, considerable experience as a cons ul ta nt t o th e U.
