3 SO MANY: A FOLIO DEDICATED TO ALL WHO SERVED WITH RAF BOMBER COMMAND, 1939-45.
Macmillan, [Toronto], (1995).
276 pp, folio, HC. "The central theme is the courage of thousands of men - most of them from ordinary backgrounds in Britain and the Empire, but including important groups from countries overrun by Germany - who survived one of the most severe and prolonged periods of physical danger and mental strain any group of people has ever been asked to bear. Over 55,500 of them were killed. The principal content allocates ten pages to each of 25 aircrew, who, often straight from school, served as pi lots, navigators, bomb-aimers, signallers, flight engineers and air gunners in Bomber Command in World War 2. Each has a biography, a photograph of his memorabilia, a handwritten reminiscence and a painted silhouette showing him as he i s i n 1 9 9 4 . Thus he will make his mark in history, and you, the reader, will be able to judge what manner of man he was. You will also be able to decide how much you owe to men like him for the fact that today Europe is entirely free, and no t e ns la v ed u nd er a single master-race." Ribbon marker. Paddington, New York, 1977.
106 pp, + 6 pages of b&w illustrations, 11" H, soft cover. ISBN 0448221861 " 'France, armee, tete d'armee, Josephine...' These were the strangely moving, strangely revealing last words spoken by Napoleon Bonaparte as he lay dying on the isle of S t. Helena in 1821. Ever since, they have contributed to the popular heroic image of the man who commanded the loyalty of millions, conquered almost the whole of Europe and lost the woman he loved. But his will, reprinted here in facsimile a n d t r a n slated into English for the first time, throws fascinating new light on one of the most enigmatic and extraordinary figures in history. From the detailed lists of his shirts and snuff boxes to the distribution of millions of francs, fr om h i s bi tt er denunciation of the 'English oligarchy and their hired assassin' to his fervent attempts to keep the Napoleonic legend alive through his son, 'The Last Will and Testament' illustrates the contradictions of the Corsican turned Fre nch man , th e ' pet it caporal' turned 'Empereur', the man turned superman and, finally, the man." DIEPPE 1942: THE JUBILEE DISASTER., Atkin, Ronald.
6 Atkin, Ronald. DIEPPE 1942: THE JUBILEE DISASTER.
Macmillan, London, 1980, first edition.
306 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0333191870 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "At dawn on 19 August 1942, five thousand Allied soldiers landed at the French port of Dieppe in the first major test of the defence of the G erman-held coastline of Europe since Dunkirk. The codename given to the operation was 'Jubilee' and its aim was to capture Dieppe and the headlands which dominate the town, hold them for a few hours and provide the Allied war planners with t h e v i t a l information they needed about enemy preparedness for the Second Front demanded by the Russians to relieve their sorely-pressed armies in the East. In nine hours of carnage and horror 'Jubilee' became a disaster. A combination of ove r- ri g id p la nn ing, inadequate supporting firepower and - in the final hours before the raid - sheer bad luck, inflicted on the Allies one of their worst defeats in a war which was already going badly. British Commandos carried out the flank a tta cks a gai nst co ast al gun batteries which dominated the seaward approaches to Dieppe and one of these raids, led by Lord Lovat, was spectacularly successful. But the assault on the port itself and the beaches on either side of Dieppe, the t ask of t he Cana dian 2nd Div ision, was a disastrous and bloody failure....Ronald Atkin has pieced together the full story of that day at Dieppe from all sides - British, Canadian, German and French - and from sources which include official docu ment s and re ports and most graph ic of all, the reminiscences of the men of both sides who planned and fought in Operation 'Jubilee'. The result is a masterly account of one of the most extraordinary - and tragic - episodes of the Second World War." Mino r fi nger m ark o n fro nt fre e end paper, tiny fain stain on fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket has been price clipped, has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very light rubbing. Very Good+/V ery Go od

BABAYAGA., Barlow, Toby.
9 Barlow, Toby. BABAYAGA.
New York Farrar, Straus & Giroux 2013 0374107874 / 9780374107871 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good+ Dust jacket art by Matt Buck.
383 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "Paris, 1959" The City of Light is the center of the universe. Expats flock to exercise their loftiest ambitions and most libertine fantasies, and maybe dabble in a bit of Cold War spycraft along the way. Refugees from the East - a few babayagas among them - arrive to start their lives anew. The world's greatest city is as cosmopolitan and alive as it's ever been. Will is just another young American seeking his fortune in Paris - except that the ad agency that employs him is a front for the CIA. He's been in the city a few years now and is beginning to sense that his time is up - and he still hasn't figured out Parisian girls. Zoya is a beautiful young woman wandering 'les boulevards', sad-eyed, coming off a bad breakup. In fact, she impaled her ex on a spike. Zoya, it turns out, has been a beautiful young woman for hundreds of years; she and her far more traditionally witchy companion, Elga, have been thriving unnoticed amid the bloody froth of Europe's wars. Inspector Vidot is a hardworking Paris police detective who cherishes quiet nights at home. But when he follows a lead from a grisly murder to the warren of a frightened old woman, he undergoes a radical transformation. Oliver is a patrician, fun-loving American who has come to Paris to start a literary journal with the help of some friends, who ask only a few discreet favors in return. When a few of his dodgier acquaintances start dropping dead, he realizes he's in well over his head, though he remains fairly confident that it's nothing a well-made cocktail can't fix. A few chance encounters, a bit of romantic chemistry, a chorus of angry ghosts, a strung-out jazzman or three, a weaponized LSD program, and a cache of rifles buried in the catacombs - those are approximately half the ingredients of 'Babayaga'. But then there's something even more unexpected that Toby Barlow has smuggled in, too: a daring, moving exploration of love and morality." Dust jacket has soft wrinkle at bottom of rear hinge, small blank label across barcode.

JUNO: CANADIANS AT D-DAY, JUNE 6, 1944., Barris, Ted. Foreword by John Keegan.
10 Barris, Ted. Foreword by John Keegan. JUNO: CANADIANS AT D-DAY, JUNE 6, 1944.
Thomas Allen, Toronto, 2004.
311 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0887621333 Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "On June 6, 1944, nearly 15,000 Canadians - at sea, in the air, and on the ground - joined the long-anticipated D-Day inva sion of Nazi-occupied Europe on the Normandy beaches. The piece of ground on which the Canadian fought so hard against heavily armed and entrenched German troops was code-named 'Juno'. On that day, the Canadians fought their way farther inland t h a n any other Allied troops. For Canada, this was an extraordinary moment of bravery, sacrifice, and coming of age in the nation's history....(This book) tells the story of Juno in the voices of the men who were there - young farmers from Manit ob a an d Saskatchewan, fresh-faced high-school graduates from Ontario, workers from mines and factories in the Maritimes, and eager recruits from Quebec and Newfoundland....In what might be described as 'Canada's longest day', we join the action ho ur by ho ur, minute by minute. We take to the skies with the airmen who flew fighters and bombers over the beaches. We ply the Channel with the sailors who swept the waters of German mines and navigated landing craft to the French coast line . We go in wit h troops who leapt off those craft into waters bristling with booby-trapped obstacles and raked by machinegun fire to establish a foothold on Juno Beach. Ted Barris has interviewed hundreds of veterans to piece together one of Canada's pro udes t day s , and one of the most significant battles of our time." 13 Bata, Thomas J. With Sonja Sinclair. BATA: SHOEMAKER TO THE WORLD.
Toronto Stoddart 1990 0773724168 / 9780773724167 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
341 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "In 1932, when young Tom Bata watched his father's coffin being lowered into his grave, he silently promised to abide by the wishes expressed in his father's 'moral testament': that the Bata Shoe Company was to be treated not as a source of private wealth, but as a public trust, a means of improving the liviing standards within the community and providing customers with good value for their money. At the time, Tom had no idea of the challenges he would face in fulfilling that promise. Not only was he ill-equipped, at age eighteen, to step into the shoes of an acknowledged business genius, creator of the largest shoe manufacturing and retailing organization in the world. Worse than that, fate was about to deal him a series of painful blows. The subjugation of his homeland, Czechoslovakia, by the Nazis was followed by an acrimonious family rift, the expropriation by Communist regimes of all his holdings in Eastern and Central Europe and, in other parts of the world, economic and political upheavals that threatened the survival of the newly resuscitated Bata organization. Yet Bata actually thrived on the sudden change and adversity. From his new home base in Canada he built, this side of the Iron Curtain, a global empire that employs 70,000 people and plays an important part in the economies of many developing countries. (This) is the story of the man, his family and their business." Remainder mark (dot) on bottom of text block, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. 352 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. "When she died in London at the age of ninety, a survivor of one of the most tumultuous epochs in history, Madame Tussaud had travelled far from her inauspicious beginnings in Strasbourg as the daughter of a common soldier and a housekeeper. Moving to Paris as a child, Marie climbed through the ranks of French society as the protegee of charmismatic showman artist Philippe Curtius, and witnessed the French Revolution in all its grisly detail. She survived the Terror and moved to London, where she struggled to find a foothold amidst the desperate competition of showmen from all over Europe. Her touring years were studded with drama and danger, and twice she nearly lost her life and livelihood - first in a shipwreck and then at the hands of a rampaging mob in the Reform riots of 1831. The core of her exhibition was Revolutionary relics given extra potency by her victim survivor status and the famous claims that she was forced to cast the death masks of Marie Antoinette and other members of the royal family, whom she had known personally when employed to teach modelling at Versailles. But did her desire to make a compelling and commercial spectacle of the events unfolding around her extend to moulding her own dramatic story? The story of a business empire sculpted out of the ashes of one of history's most turbulent periods reveal a woman who - in exploiting the human fascination with the rich, the famous and the infamous - was far ahead of her time."
