Combined Books, (Conshohocken, PA, 1993), Ist edition.
240 pp, 8vo, soft cover. "This fascinating new handbook on the War Between the States is an invaluable source of facts, statistics, data and trivia. The wide variety of lists includes detailed topics of every description. Commanders on both sides are ranked according to the best and worst ever to lead troops during the war. A selection of casualty figures demonstrates the enormous number of lives taken on the fields of the war's bloodiest battles. The composition of the armies is given in terms of state origin, ethnic background and even average height of the troops. Lists also probe social issues such as the distribution of the African American and White populations, the elections of 1860 and 1864 and the songs and poems sung in the North and South..." 192 pp, square large 8vo (9 1/4" H x 9 1/4" D). B&w photographs. "The immigrants who came to Canada in the ten years following the Second World War settled in a booming land with many new jobs to fill. The immigrants' reasons for coming here and their experiences in the new society were as varied as their own backgrounds. First were the war brides, some married after only a few weeks of courtship; there were refugees and displaced persons from e astern Europe and Russia; there were British and Dutch farm families, and thousands of others looking for a fresh start far from battle-scarred Europe. Then in the fifties came the Asians and blacks. Jean Bruce, herself an immigrant, tells through hundreds of in-depth intervies across Canada of these people as they fulfilled their dreams, and dispelled fears while establishing new roots. She has ranged the country in selecting photos from churches, ethnic organizations, private albums, the Public Archives, and diverse libraries and museums. In dealing not only with the immigrant experience, but also with changing attitudes towards immigration within Canadian society, (she) has raised issues which will continue to be important and controversial. But most importantly, she has created a portrait of Canada at a vibrant period in its history, a period which was to change the face of the nation forever." 177 pp, 9 1/4" H. Signed by author on title page, under printed name. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "Between 1896 and 1914, the Canadian government carried out a vigorous programme in central Europe, Britain, and the United States to persuade people to immigrate to the Canadian west, 'The Last Best West'. Hundreds of thousands of prospective settlers from diverse and distinctive ethnic backgrounds responded, leading to an extraordinary mass migration which changed the face of Canada. This great campaign to populate the west is presented here by Jean Bruce, in a compelling and moving selection of more than 190 photographs of the period, together with short related texts. Her superb pictorial history gives a fine sense of scope and perspective to this vital period in the growth of Canada. We see all the paraphernalia of the government advertising campaign, the journey from the setllers' homelands, the first prairie homesteads, the development of western cities and industries and, above all, the people whose lives transformed - and were transformed by - the Canadian west." 278 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. SIGNED BY AUTHOR ON HALF TITLE PAGE. ISBN 1594201080 "It was the emblematic crime of our moment: On a cold November day in Amsterdam, an angry young Muslim man, Mohammed Bouyeri, the son of Moroc can immigrants, shot and killed the celebrated and controversial Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh, great-grandnephew of Vincent and iconic European provocateur, for making a movie with the Dutch politician Ayaan Hirsi Ali that 'insulted the prophet Mo h ammed'. After Bouyeri shot Van Gogh, he calmly stood over the body and cut his throat with a curved machete, as if performing a ritual sacrifice, which in a very real sense he was. The murder horrified quiet, complacent, prosperous Holland, a co un try that prides itself on being a bastion of tolerance, and sent shock waves across Europe and around the world. Shortly thereafter, Ian Buruma returned to the country of his childhood to investigate the event and its larger meaning. The result is his masterpiece: a book with the intimacy and narrative brilliance for which Buruma is renowned. (His) entire life's work has led him to this story - the tale of what happens when political Islam collides with the secular West, and tolerance f inds its limits." "Through James Davis's eyes, we see the real face of Canada's army: efficient, technologically advanced - sometimes brutal. The uncompromising opinio ns Davis has about the strengths and weaknesses of our present-day military are backed up by his own first-hand experience at 'the sharp end' as a frontline soldier. The bungling and politically motivated actions of the Forces' senior ranks a n d t h e ir government masters, he states, chronically compromise the effectiveness of our fighting forces. Davis was at the defence of Sarajevo as centuries-old ethnic emnity between Serbs and Croats exploded into house-by-house guerilla warfa re . H e w as i n Rwanda as Hutus and Tutsis struggled for dominance. A former member of Canada's famed Airborne Regiment, Davis relives its emotional, controversial last days following revelations of misconduct by a handful of members in Somali a. T he st ory of hi s active duty is chilling but leavened with poignancy - hardened soldiers moved by the slaughter of children and innocents in the former Yugoslavia; an inspiring visit to a gorilla sanctuary in Rwanda, mere miles from horrifi c b loo dle tti ng. Dav is a lso portrays the daily challenges of making-do in Canada's diminished military forces and tells shocking anecdotes such as one about the 'Remembrance Day Massacre', when a poorly planned field exercise went terribly wro ng." Vancouver Douglas & McIntyre 1985 0888944721 / 9780888944726 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
192 pp, 11 1/2" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "Spadina has been the starting point for wave after wave of new Canadian immigrants. Once the main focus for Jewish culture and life in Toronto, the street became a centre of commerce and saw intense political activity during the thirties and forties. Now the Jewish garment factories overlook bustling Chinese sidewalk markets. Greek cafes jostle with delicatessens and Szechuan restaurants. Contemporary art and music thrive amidst this colourful ethnic diversity. Studios and alternative galleries crowd abandoned warehouse space above street level, and all along the street, such classic watering holes as Grossman's, the El Macombo, the Paramount and the Silver Dollar dispense entertainment for tastes that run from black and new wave music to strippers. (This book) presents a collection of photographs and related texts ranging from the years when the street was a tree-lined boulevard, right through to today, when the Queen Street art scene and a rapidly expanding Chinatown are transforming Spadina. Drawing on his own Jewish roots and family history, Rick Salutin provides a very personal introduction that demonstrates how and why Spadina is unique, why it has become so important to those whose lives it has intersected. Organized to reflect and even recreate the Spadina experience, (it) takes the reader up the street starting at the lakeshore and ending at Bloor Street." 199 pp, 11 1/4" H. (B)rings together reproductions of over 170 paintings, drawings, watercolours and prints, in which 130 individual artists have interpreted aspects of the city of Toronto, from its incorporation in 1834 right up to the present day. Although organized in five chronological sections, it is not simply an illustrated history of the city. Rather it is a gallery of pictures accompanied by explanatory texts. Special emphasis has been given to new and unfamiliar material, and over 100 of the pictures in the book have never been reproduced before. Care has also been taken to reflect the ethnic, religious, social and cultural diversity of the city. The big names are here, among them such figures as Paul Kane, Sanford Fleming and Robert Harris from the Victorian period, several members of the Group of Seven, and more recent masters such as Jack Bush and David Milne. But here also are a host of less famous artists: some city residents, some passing visitors, some anonymous, some amateurs whose enthusiasm was greater than their talent. All, however, in their own ways, have made a vital contribution to our record of Toronto as it was and is." Minor scuff on bottom edge of front board, book slightly curved. 192 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1560987944 Profusely illustrated with b&w and color photos and drawings. "Among the Mande-speaking groups dispersed throughout much of West Africa, certain artists - including potters and l eatherworkers - form a spiritually powerful social class in which gender determines craft specialization. Ceramic water jars and cooking pots are made only by the wives and female relatives of blacksmiths. Leather objects such as knife shea t h s , a m ulet cases, and, more recently, western-style shoes and bags are produced by male leatherworkers. While these objects display features common to those of other West African groups, the manner in which they are produced has remained dis ti nc tl y M an de . Analyzing the work of Mande potters and leatherworkers, (the author) argues that studying craft technologies in addition to object styles is essential to reconstructing the art heritage of an ethnically complex region. Drawing on ar cha eo lo gic al and historical evidence as well as her field research in Mali, she shows how tools and practices such as potters' use of convex molds and leatherworkers' adherence to specific knife blade shapes serve to distinguish the good s ma de b y Ma nde ar tist s f rom those of neighboring groups. She also discusses the pride the potters take in their healing and spiritual knowledge, and the sense of difference between craftsmen who specialize exclusively in leatherworking and those who doubl e as bar ds an d mu sicians. Examining the roles of Mande leatherworkers and potters in the rise and fall of empires, the development of trans-Saharan trade networks, and the spread of Islam, Frank questions the 'one-tribe, one-st yle' i nterp retati ons t hat h ave do minat ed studies of West African art. Focusing on two traditions that have been little studied, (this book) explores the complex, shifting relationships among the identities of Mande craftspeople, the objects they cr eate, and the techn ologie s they use." "Among the people who have achieved eminence on the contemporary scene, in the arts, in the professions, in public service, in education, an unexpectedly large number (come from) Winnipeg, the North End. This book began as an inquiry into the forces that led to so rich a harvest of talent from one small section of an ordinary city on the edge of the Canadian prairie. In a series of eighteen reminiscences by former North-Enders, it attempts to reconstruct the quality of life in that polyglot community in the years immediately before and after World War II, and from the point of view of one distinctive ethnic group, the children of Jewish immigrants. Jews constituted only a small proportion of the North End's ethnic mix, but as a group they quickly reached a remarkable level of acculturation and achievement, setting the tone and pace for the entire enclave." "Although Kiev remained an important religious, educational, and trade center after its destruction by the Mongols in 1240, it did not r ecover the splendor or significance it had enjoyed in earlier times. Even at the beginning of the nineteenth century, one visitor described Kiev as little more than three barely connected settlements - Podil, Pechersk, and High City - each 'v i l l a g e -like' in appearance. 'Kiev,' he asserted, 'could barely be called a city at all'. During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, however, Kiev grew from a community of about twenty thousand inhabitants into a major metropolis of more th an s ix h un dred thousand people. Drawing on a wide variety of previously unexamined sources, (the author) tells the story of the city's transformation and renascence during these decades of exceptional growth. Although late-imperial Kiev be cam e a n i mpo rta nt center of Russian culture and authority, the city's population included thousands of Ukrainians, Poles, and Jews. Hamm vividly describes the character of Kiev's major ethnic groups, the conflicts among them, and the contribut ions of each to the cit y's history and culture. He addresses a variety of political issues - the attempts by local burghers to defend the autonomy granted them in medieval times, for example - but devotes particular attention to the development of Ki ev's revo luti onar y mo vement, the upheavals of 1905, and the city's pogroms. (He) also examines Kiev's recreational and artistic life and provides fascinating insights into what it was like to live in one of Imperial Russia's largest and most i mport ant ci ties. 381 pp, 9 1/2" H. Tables, graphs. "(R)econstructs the social structure, life cycle, and domestic relations within a mid-nineteenth century Canadian city. (Katz's) analysis draws on the records of the entire population found on the manuscript census, assessment rolls, city directories, newspapers, and other sources. (He) has explored the relationships between inequality, ethnicity, sex, mobility, transiency, household structure, and coming-of-age during a period of profound social change. At one level, the book describes in great detail the nature of family and society in a commercial city. Simul-taneously, it uses the patterns uncovered in Hamilton, which the author compares to those other historians have found elsewhere, to speculate about broad questions in social history and social theory. Finally, the book is an exploratory exercise in the application of quantitative techniques to social history; as such its interest lies in its method as well as its substance. The author contents that two themes - structural rigidity and individual transiencey - characterized life in the commercial city. Despite the massive flow of people into and out of the city, its basic structures remained virtually unaltered, thought the identity of its occupants changed dramatically. In part, the history of the family reflected these two themes; but the family had an independent existence as well. For, despite some structural parallells, the family served somewhat different purposes than its modern counterpart, especially the sheltering of young people during a period Katz calls 'semi-autonomy', a phase of the life cycle that virtually has disappeared." "Brave, tough, resourceful, and, rarest of all, blessed with an irreverent sense of humour, (Major-General Lewis) MacKenzie needed all those qualities for the biggest assignment of his military career: striving for peace among the warring factions in the former Yugoslavia. In this riveting memoir, MacKenzie describes how he created Sector Sarajevo, and with a 30-nation UN force set out to liberate the airport to receive desperately needed food and medical supplies. MacKenzie's outstanding and unorthodox leadership catapulted him to the status of an international celebrity, as he used the media - 'the only weapon I had' - to maximum advantage. Against the daily drama of shelling, sabotage, murder and shameless propaganda, motivated by ethnic hatreds, MacKenzie's adventures in Sarajevo read like a war novel - except that it is all tragically true. With the verve of a natural storyteller, (he) also recounts the often bizarre highlights of eight previous peacekeeping tours in the Middle East, Cyprus and Vietnam. From bluffing his way through the Turkish-Cypriot lines to boisterous forays into Saigon's netherworld; from basketball in the Gaza Strip to dodging sniper fire in Sarajevo; from daring diplomatic improvisations to bluntly outspoken criticisms of the UN bureaucracy: here is a veteran peackeeper's frank, funny and unforgettable story."
