RED-TAPE AND PIGEON-HOLE GENERALS: ANDREW A. HUMPHREYS IN THE ARMY OF THE POTOMAC., Arner, Frederick B., commentary. (William H. Armstrong.) Foreword by Charles T. Joyce.
2 Arner, Frederick B., commentary. (William H. Armstrong.) Foreword by Charles T. Joyce. RED-TAPE AND PIGEON-HOLE GENERALS: ANDREW A. HUMPHREYS IN THE ARMY OF THE POTOMAC.
Rockbridge, Charlottesville, Virginia, 1999, first edition.
378 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1883522153 B&w photographs, maps, reproductions. "Regarded as anonymously written fiction when it was originally published in 1864, this rollicking story of the way it was in the Union 's Army of the Potomac is a thinly disguised tale of truth. It is, in fact, a scathing attack on the character and military ability of Gen. Andrew Atkinson Humphreys. The author, Lt. Col. William H. Armstrong of the 129th Pennyslvania Voluntee r I n fantry, risked a libel action to send his message, yet he recognized that abuses within the system could not be addressed without first being exposed. The tale also includes a vivid, firsthand description of the brutal history of the 129th a nd th e Tyler Brigade and poignant stories of its men - Frederick B Arner's perceptive and comprehensive commentary identifies the main players and units and taps primary sources that support Armstrong's point of view - A masterpiece of historic sl eut h ing a nd disciplined research, this volume may change the way some historians view General Humphreys." THE SMUG MINORITY., Berton, Pierre.
3 Berton, Pierre. THE SMUG MINORITY.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1968 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good-
160 pp, 8 3/4" H. "This is a book about freedom - and the lack of it - in Canada: freedom from useless and often degrading toil; freedom from want and freedom from ignorance. It is Berton's thesis, documented by public statments made over the past generation, that a smug minority of business and political leaders has conspired to inhibit that freedom. The author indicts his fellow countrymen for failing to invest in human beings in the same way that they invest in power plants, highways, and gold mines. His researches into poverty in Canada and into the inequalities of the education system will shock a good many readers just as his theories on work and leisure will enrage others raised in the Calvinist ethic. The book ranges over a wide variety of topics: the hippie movement in Toronto's Yorkville village - the author's personal experiences in a Yukon mining camp - the future of educational television in Canada - and the Chamber of Commerce's abortive 'Operation Freedom' campaign. But always Berton hammers on his central theme - that the nation has been held back by an inbred power-elite: 'Selfish, narrow, short-sighted men unable to grasp the vision of the future, imprisoned by a bookkeeping attitude to life, creeping silently and blindly along at the tag end of the parade of progress'." Small stamp mark on free front endpaper. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top of spine, light to moderate rubbing - mostly on rear panel, one small edge tear archivally taped.

Chapman & Hall, London, 1954, Ist edition.
224 pp, small 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. "Would you - in peace time - kill a man to save innocent lives, if that was the only means by which those lives could be saved? And, if you did so, would it be murder? It certainly would be if, at the actual time you killed, you did not do so in immediate defence of yourself or someone else. (This book) deals with the trial for murder of Alec Morland, who is alleged to have been guilty of killing a man in circumstances of that kind..." Minor wrinkle at top of spine, bequest bookplate on free front endpaper, small bookstore label on rear pastedown. 5 Clark, Andrew. (Harold Pringle.) A KEEN SOLDIER: THE EXECUTION OF SECOND WORLD WAR PRIVATE HAROLD PRINGLE.
Alfred A. Knopf, (Toronto, 2002), first edition.
342 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 067697354X "Harold Pringle was underage when the Second World War broke out, eager to leave quiet Flinton, Ontario, to serve by his father's side. But few who volunteered to fight 'the good fight' realized what horror lay ahead; soon both young Harold and his father were cracking under the strain. His father was sent home; Harold Pringle found himself in Italy, fighting on the bloody 'Hitler Line'. Shellshocked, this broken soldier embarked on a tragic, final course: desertion, debauchery in the streets of Rome and a suspect accusation of murder. His appeal was reviewed by the highest levels of government, right up to Prime Minister King. But two months after the official end of the war, Private Pringle was put to death - the only soldier the Canadians had executed since the First World War. His own countrymen carried out the orders, forbidden to go home before completing this last grotesque assignment. The Pringle file was closed and stayed that way for fifty years - until Andrew Clark uncovered it and began a two-year investigative search. (This) is a true-life military detective story that shows another side of what many consider our proudest military campaign. Andrew Clark examines the fallout of a crisis that disfigured our national conscience and continues to raise questions about the ethics of war..." Minor wrinkle at top/bottom of spine. 6 Evans, A. Margaret and Barker, C.A.V. CENTURY ONE: A HISTORY OF THE ONTARIO VETERINARY ASSOCIATION, 1874-1974.
Guelph, Ontario Self-published 1976 0969069000 Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
516 pp, 9 1/4" H. Pictorial endpapers, b&w photographs. "Few people appreciate the significant contribution made by veterinarians to the economic importance of the livestock industry, the quality of small animals and the control of diseases affecting public health throughout Canada. The increasing value of such work is largely due to the efforts of the profession itself, particularly in the province of Ontario. Human survival still depends on animals and animal products. To that close relationship the veterinarian brings the benefits of modern science; his professional skill and integrity today defend the economic and physical well-being of all citizens. In a fast-flowing but detailed narrative, the authors review the early years of the O.V.A., its emphasis on high ethical and scientific standards and a long struggle for adequate statutory recognition. These advances have been closely linked to the remarkable role of the Ontario Veterinary College throughout the century. The book also traces the rise of the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association to its position of national influence. In Canada, the profession is unique in that close collaboration with all levels of government is constantly required. The control and suppression of rabies is only one example - perhaps the best know to the public." Dust jacket has tiny tear/wrinkling at top of front hinge - archivally taped, minor soiling.

(This book) continues Frye's extraordinary enquiry into Canada's literature, universities, social assumptions and national character. In thirteen essays and addresses, Frye covers a broad range of subject matter, from future shock to the meaning of Canada's history; from student politics to the idea of the university; from regional verse to Marshall McLuhan and the age of television. Penguin, London, 2006, reprint.
373 pp, small 8vo (7 3/4" H), soft cover. ISBN 014045523X "The stories collected in this volume reflect the rich tradition of medieval Jain storytelling between the seventh and fifteenth centuries, from simple folk tales and lives of famous monks to sophisticated narratives of rebirth. They describe the ways in which a path to peace and bliss can be found, either by renouncing the world or by following Jain ethics of non-violence, honesty, moderation and fidelity. Here are stories depictin g the painful consequences when a loved one chooses life as a monk, the triumph of Jain women who win over their husbands to their religion, or the rewards of a simple act of piety. The volume ends with an account of vice and virtue, which d e p i c t s the thieving and destructive passions lurking in the forest of life, ready to rob the unsuspecting traveller of reason and virtue. Phyllis Granoff's translation preserves the flavour of the original tales. In her introduction, she di sc us se s Ja in d o ctrine and belief, the Jains' preservation of medieval Indian stories, and the themes and sources of individual tales." 9 Gray, Edwyn A. THE KILLING TIME: THE U-BOAT WAR 1914-18.
Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1972, book club edition.
241 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates. "The explosion which followed Kapitanleutnant Schweiger's curt order to fire on the afternoon of 7 May 1915 far exceeded even his most fervid imaginings. For the torpedo which streake d away from U 20 in response to his command sent to the bottom of the sea the liner Lusitania and with her 1,195 innocent men, women and children, many of them citizens of neutral America and the howl of indignation which followed this cold-b l o o d e d atrocity resounded throughout the world...(The author) looks at the German side of the picture and in the process raises some very topical moral issues. When two countries are at war is it to be total or limited war and, if the latter, w ho i s to d e fine the limits? The problem was to bedevil the German Submarine Service throughout the First World War as the Kaiser and his Admirals weighed and reweighed the effects of the British blockade against the value of American neutra lit y a nd no in cid en t, except perhaps the invasion of Belgium, more clearly defined the problem than the sinking of the Lusitania. Edwyn Gray tells the exciting story of those extraordinarily brave submariners, some like Schweiger, utterly rut hles s, o the rs the very pa ragon of chivalry. Given the facts the reader is left ot make his own judgement as to the ethics of their behaviour..." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. KIERKEGAARD AND THE TREACHERY OF LOVE. CAMBRIDGE STUDIES IN RELIGION AND CRITICAL THOUGHT 9., Hall, Amy Laura. (Soren Kierkegaard.)
10 Hall, Amy Laura. (Soren Kierkegaard.) KIERKEGAARD AND THE TREACHERY OF LOVE. CAMBRIDGE STUDIES IN RELIGION AND CRITICAL THOUGHT 9.
Cambridge University Press, (Cambridge, 2002).
222 pp, 8vo (8 15/16" H), soft cover. "This is a major study of Kierkegaard and love. Amy Laura Hall explores Kierkegaard's description of love's treachery, difficulty, and hope, reading his 'Works of Love' as a text that both deciphers and complicates the central books in his pseudonymous canon: 'Fear and Trembling', 'Repetition', 'Either/Or', and 'Stages on Life's Way'. In all of these works, the characters are, as in real life, complex and incomplete, and the conclusions are perplexing. Hall argues that a spiritual void brings each text into being, and her interpretation is as much about faith as about love. In a style that is both scholarly and lyrical, she intimates answers to some of the puzzles, making a poetic contribution to ethics and the philosophy of religion." GUILTY CREATURES: RENAISSANCE POETRY AND THE ETHICS OF AUTHORSHIP., Kezar, Dennis.
15 Kezar, Dennis. GUILTY CREATURES: RENAISSANCE POETRY AND THE ETHICS OF AUTHORSHIP.
Oxford University Press, Oxford, 2001, first edition.
268 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0195142950 "In this innovative and learned study, Dennis Kezar examines how Renaissance poets conceive the theme of killing as a specifically representational and interpretive form of v iolence. Closely reading both major poets and lesser known authors of the early modern period, Kezar explores the ethical self-consciousness and accountability that attend literary killing, paying particular attention to the ways in which t h i s r e f l ection indicates the poet's understanding of his audience. Among the many poems through which Kezar explores the concept of authorial guilt elicited by violent representation are Skelton's 'Phyllyp Sparrowe', Spencer's 'Faerie Quee n' , Sh ak e sp ea re 's 'Julius Caesar', the multi-authored 'Witch of Edmonton', and Milton's 'Samson Agonistes'. Each chapter places an incident of textual violence within the context of England's literary and social history. In each case, Keza r o ff ers an o rig ina l a cco unt of early modern depictions of violence that reflects on the poetic process and explores the ethical ramifications of literature for both author and audience. In emphasizing the social, literary, and historical cons equ ence s of 'k illi ng p oems ', t his volume further advances scholarship in historicist and speech-act theories of the early modern period. (It) also contributes a provocative chapter to the current debate on the ethics of literary commun icati on." Min or wr inkl ing a t bot tom o f spi ne.
