307 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). "On average, people squander forty days annually compensating for things they've forgotten. Joshua Foer used to be one of those people. But after a year of memory training, he found himself in the finals of the U.S. Memory Championship. Even more important, he found a vital truth we too often forget: In every way that matters, we are the sum of our memories. (This book) draws on cutting-edge research, a surprising cultural history of memory, and venerable tricks of the mentalist's trade to transform our understanding of human remembering. Under the tutelage of top 'mental athletes', Foer learns ancient techniques once employed by Cicero to memorize his speeches and by medieval scholars to memorize entire books. Using methods that have been largely forgotten, he discovers that we can all dramatically improve our memories." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor wear and tiny tear at top of front flap-fold.

BEYOND WORDS: MYSTICAL FANCY IN CHILDREN'S LITERATURE., Higgins, James E.
9 Higgins, James E. BEYOND WORDS: MYSTICAL FANCY IN CHILDREN'S LITERATURE.
Teachers College Press, New York, 1971, second printing.
112 pp, 7 3/16" H, soft cover. "The art of creativity in children's literature is evaluated according to a different set of criteria and standards from that applied to adult literature - namely, the writer's ability to show respect for the 'innate rights' of the child and to write with a sensitive feeling for the integrity of childhood. Like Coleridge, James E. Higgins defines art, in concepts 'beyond words', as the fusion of new identities through the extraordinary functions of the imaginat ion. Classically known fairy tales and books of mystical fancy appeal directly to the 'inner child', an aspect of childhood that grownups, teachers, and writers for children can get to know it they look through the child's looking glass wi t h o u t t h e adult's perception. In this discussion of children's literature, ranging from the works of W.H. Hudson and George MacDonald through 'The Hobbit' of J.R.R. Tolkien and 'The Little Prince' of Antoine de Saint-Exupery, Professor Higg in s co nt in u al ly e mphasizes the importance of things that are not seen as essential to the development of the child's spirit of security in today's educational society, which often tends to relinquish the concentration on things of wonder and fa it h f or mor e rel eva nt everyday identities." 13 McKague, Andrew Hill. FROM FARM LAD TO EDUCATOR.
Boston Mills Press, (Erin, Ontario, 1989), Ist edition.
248 pp, 8vo, HC in dust jacket. B&w photos, map endpapers. "The majority of Ontario people have grown up without any knowledge of two very important phases of rural education. The one-room, rural public schools served well for more than a century . Continutation schools were a boon to rural life for more than 50 years. Since little has been written about either, I feel an urge to describe my experiences with both. For many residents of Southern Ontario, the northern districts o f t h e p r o v i nce seem a world apart. Distances and isolation there render impossible some of the advantages of centralization of education in southern Ontario. I wish to emphasize some of the problems of education in the north...If I try to c o ve r, i n s im pl e fo rm, a period of 50 years in education, I must do so as I have seen it evolve. Thus, the result is an autobiography." Dust jacket has light edgwear/wrinkling. NF/VG+

The next May he was on the Western Front and on June 17, 1917, still only nineteen, he was struck by shrapnel at Vimy Ridge. By one of the ironies that war provides he c a n b e considered lucky, for his wounds sent him to England to convalesce. There we pick up his story on (a) September afternoon. His narrative begins at this point, where chance intervened to change the direction of his life. While lying on a Ke nt i sh hillside, he saw two airplanes, then new-fangled marvels, cavorting in the sky above. Why didn't he join the infant Royal Flying Corps, a friend present asked? The thought was not a new one, but the moment to act was. Young Shrive j oi ned th e RFC and made, as he recognised at the time, 'one of the most important decisions of my life.' One significant result of this decision came a year later when the newly commissioned 2nd Lieutenant Frank Shrive of the Royal Flying Corp s fou nd h im s el f on board the SS Stephen, out of Dundee, bound for Russia.
