1 Bagnold, Enid. "NATIONAL VELVET".
New York William Morrow Reprint Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good Laurian Jones.
303 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H). B&w drawings. "(Velvet Brown's) passion in life was horses. And so, when she won a notorious and unwanted piebald in a village lottery, (she) began to dream. And, since the breathless imagination of youth sees no obstacles as insuperable, Velvet's thoughts turned to the greatest race in the world - the Grand National. The Piebald (was) part carthorse, part Arab. Because he preferred sociable village life to lonely fields, he learned to jump fences. When Velvet took him on, he looked like a newly painted rocking horse. When he appeared at Aintree, the crowd looked at him and hooted. Enid Bagnold's clear, pungent style gives this joyous and captivating tale a rare flavor. It is rich with the comedy of life and character and poignant in its realization of the eager, indomitable trust of youth." Minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wear/wrinkling, two tiny edge tears, two soft creases at bottom of front panel.

There were already four books in this Mystery Series, all about Roger, Diana, Snubby and his mad little spaniel - four books in which th e circus boy, Barney, was seeking his unknown father. But the lovers of these 'Barney Books' begged so hard for yet another, that there was nothing for it b u t t o w r i te a fifth. In this book there is a strange mystery: the theft of papers from rooms whose doors and windows are locked. How are these robberies committed, and who is the thief? Somehow the mystery centres itself on Rilloby Fair, and so, of course, Enid Blyton brings a whole Fair to life, with its queer and interesting characters. WHO'S WHO IN CHILDREN'S BOOKS: A TREASURY OF THE FAMILIAR CHARACTERS OF CHILDHOOD., Fisher, Margery.
12 Fisher, Margery. WHO'S WHO IN CHILDREN'S BOOKS: A TREASURY OF THE FAMILIAR CHARACTERS OF CHILDHOOD.
New York Holt, Rinehart and Winston 1975 0030150914 / 9780030150913 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Various.
399 pp, 10" H. Pictorial endpapers, profusely illustrated throughout with b&w drawings and colour plates. "Who does not have vivid memories of characters from the books of childhood? Alice in Wonderland, Brer Rabbit, Dr Dolittle, Paddington Bear, the Railway Children, Winnie the Pooh, Tom Sawyer - the list is endless. Many names are so familiar - favourites from generation to generation - that they need no repeating; others are half forgotten; some may be almost unknown. This book is for everyone who wishes to recapture those memories and to find fresh inspiration for reading. It is a personal collection of characters from the world of children's fiction, by an author widely known and respected for her extensive knowledge on the subject. Entries include not only human characters but humanized or personalized animals, toys and vehicles, fairy and folk tale characters. The distinctive qualities of each are evoked in the writing - their appearance, mannerisms, speech, details of background, their role within the story - so that the reader recaptures or is introduced to the essential personality of the character concerned. From Margery Fisher's pertinent critical comments one is given an indication of the quality and status of the book in question. Approximately 400 illustrations accompany the text, showing not only the well-known representations of the characters, but title pages, authors' photographs, and scenes from film treatments. This is an invaluable treasury in which to look up characters from children's books, trace where they appeared, find their authors and first publication dates. It will inspire enthusiasm to read books not previously known and can be read by anyone for pure enjoyment." Minor edge wear, minor wrinkling at top of spine, previous owner's name and date on half-title page. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling, tiny dent on spine.

13 Gantz, Jeffrey, translated with introduction by. THE MABINOGION.
New York Dorset 1985 0880290390 / 9780880290395 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
310 pp, 8 1/4" H. "These eleven medieval Welsh tales were first written down in the 13th century, but were the product of countless generations of oral tradition. This fresh and exciting new translation presents the classic stories in a highly readable, but still authentic style. All the color and energy of the Celtic world emerges through the myths, folklore, history and pseudo-history of Celtic Britain. 'Pwyll', 'Branwen', 'Manawydan' and 'Math' are mythological fragments bound by central, unifying themes. Other stories show British courage and intelligence in Roman and pre-Roman days, while King Arthur makes his first appearance in Celtic prose in a tale of the hero's quest for the giant's fair daughter. Like Cretien de Troyes and Thomas Malory, 'Owein', 'Peredur' and 'Gereint' use the legends of Arthur's court as backdrop and ancient themes as material for heroic and romantic adventure. Just as the ancient mystical world is evoked in these stories so is Wales, whose lakes, valleys and rivers are very much rooted in history. The 'Mabinogion' combines myth and history, reality and illusion, and magic and the ordinary to recreate the essence of ancient Celtic life. Includes: Bibliography, Index, Map of Wales, and a Note on the Pronunciation of Welsh Names." Minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wear, very light rubbing, very light browning to inside edges.

16 Hunt, Peter, editor. Associate editors: Dennis Butts, Ethel Heins, Margaret Kinnell, Tony Watkins. With Gillian Avery, Anne Scott MacLeod, Julia Briggs, Zena Sutherland, Peter Hollindale, Michael Stone, Roderick McGillis & Beth Gilderdale. CHILDREN'S LITERATURE: AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY.
Oxford Oxford University Press 1995 0192123203 / 9780192123206 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good
378 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). Pictorial endpapers, many b&w and color photographs and reproductions. "(T)races the history of children's books in Britain, the USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand from the very first printed books through to the present day. (This book) takes 'children's literature' to mean books designed for children as well as books for childhood, and so embraces everything from religious tracts to multi-media comics, from the 'classic' to the unashamedly popular. Written by leading experts, this survey shows that children's literature reflects how childhood has been defined, controlled, and appreciated at different times. It reveals how adults have explored questions of power, entertainment, sexuality, and equality through their writing for children, and demonstrates how the borders between what is adult and what children's fiction are routinely blurred. A series of chronological chapters charts the 'history' which begins in the sixteenth century with grammars and ABCs. We move from books of instruction through to fables and fantasies in the eighteenth century, from reward books and romance to school stories in the nineteenth, and on to comics, colour picture-books, and science fiction in (the twentieth century). Throughout the text, books, authors, illustrators, publishers, and children readers are discussed within their wider social, political, and economic environment. Richly illustrated in black and white and colour, and with a section on further reading, a full index, and a chronology which places books for children in their literary and political context, this is a fascinating study which will delight all readers, young and old." Dust jacket has minor edge wear and light edge wrinkling; tiny dent on front hinge; slight fading to color on front panel, spine, top edge and flap-folds.

Peterborough, Canada Broadview 1989 0921149395 / 9780921149392 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
273 pp, oblong (8 3/4" H x 11 1/3" D. B&w photographs, map. "(P)resents a compelling view of one of the great travellers of (the 20th) century and of the last days of 'the Old North'. A mining engineer and almost the archetype of the practical man, George Douglas was in 1911 given the task of searching for minerals in the watershed of the Coppermine, above the Arctic Circle. He never found great wealth, but developed a lifelong affinity with the North itself: a fragile land of subtle beauty about to be changed forever by the advance of southern 'civilization'. During that year and the next he lived a life of extraordinary adventure, became the first white man to make contact with many of the Inuit of the region, and became involved with the great figures of that last generation of Northern adventurers. He became a reluctant father figure to Jack Hornby, the doomed romantic who would starve to death with Harold Adlard and Edgar Christian in 1927. Douglas knew as well Robert Service; in one of the more grisly episodes recounted in this book, he and Service are among a group that discovers the bodies of two dead trappers in an isolated cabin. This book, illustrated with 116 of Douglas's own extraordinary photographs, makes that place, that era, and this remarkable man come to life again." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has some light edge wrinkling.
