COPPERMINE: THE FAR NORTH OF GEORGE M. DOUGLAS., Mallory, Enid. Foreword by Frances Douglas.
7 Mallory, Enid. Foreword by Frances Douglas. COPPERMINE: THE FAR NORTH OF GEORGE M. DOUGLAS.
Peterborough, Canada Broadview 1989 0921149395 / 9780921149392 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
273 pp, oblong (8 3/4" H x 11 1/3" D. B&w photographs, map. "(P)resents a compelling view of one of the great travellers of (the 20th) century and of the last days of 'the Old North'. A mining engineer and almost the archetype of the practical man, George Douglas was in 1911 given the task of searching for minerals in the watershed of the Coppermine, above the Arctic Circle. He never found great wealth, but developed a lifelong affinity with the North itself: a fragile land of subtle beauty about to be changed forever by the advance of southern 'civilization'. During that year and the next he lived a life of extraordinary adventure, became the first white man to make contact with many of the Inuit of the region, and became involved with the great figures of that last generation of Northern adventurers. He became a reluctant father figure to Jack Hornby, the doomed romantic who would starve to death with Harold Adlard and Edgar Christian in 1927. Douglas knew as well Robert Service; in one of the more grisly episodes recounted in this book, he and Service are among a group that discovers the bodies of two dead trappers in an isolated cabin. This book, illustrated with 116 of Douglas's own extraordinary photographs, makes that place, that era, and this remarkable man come to life again." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has some light edge wrinkling.

8 Michener, James A. TALES OF THE SOUTH PACIFIC. MACMILLAN LARGE PRINT EDITION.
New York Macmillan Large Print Edition. Hard Cover Very Good - Good-
326 pp, 11 1/4" H. Dark blue cloth with silver, gold & copper lettering on spine. "This collection of tales is set against the background of the South Pacific, the endless ocean, the coral specks called islands, the coconut palms, the reefs, the lagoons, the jungles, and the full moon rising against the volcanoes. The tales are told by a young naval officer whose duties on an Admiral's staff take him up and down the islands. He meets many people, both service men and the original inhabitants, and hears their stories - the remittance man who lived among the Japs and radioed their movements until one fatal and dramatic morning; Bloody Mary, the Tonkinese woman who introduced her daughter to a young Marine lieutenant; Emile de Becque, the French planter who fell in love with an American nurse; Lieutenant Bill Harbison, who lived like a hero but turned out to be a louse; and the young enlisted man from Ohio who was going to pieces on one of the islands until a Sea Bee gave him a reason for living." CANADIAN ART IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY., Murray, Joan.
9 Murray, Joan. CANADIAN ART IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY.
Dundurn, Toronto, 1999, first printing.
272 pp, 4to (12 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1550023322 "This book is a survey of the richest, most controversial and perhaps most thoroughly confusing century in the whole history of the visual arts in Canada - the period from 1900 to the present. Mu rray shows how, beginning at the turn of the century, new directions in art emerged - starting with our early Modernists, among them Lauren Harris, Tom Thomson, and the Group of Seven. Today, Modernism has lost its dominance . A r t ists, critics, and the public alike are confronted by a scene of unprecedented variety and complexity. Murray discusses social and political events in combination with the cultural context: movements, ideas, attitudes, and styles; the imp or t an t gr oups in Canadian ar t, and major artists and their works. Fully documented, well-researched, and written with clarity and over three hundred illustrations in both colour and black-and-white, Murray's book is essential for understandin g C an a dia n art of (the twentieth) century. As an introduction, it is excellent in both its scope and intelligence." Light wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has some very minor edge wrinkling. Near Fine/Near Fine

A CONCISE HISTORY OF CANADIAN PAINTING. SECOND (EXPANDED) EDITION., Reid, Dennis.
10 Reid, Dennis. A CONCISE HISTORY OF CANADIAN PAINTING. SECOND (EXPANDED) EDITION.
Toronto Oxford University Press 1988 0195406648 / 9780195406641 Second (expanded) Edition. Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
418 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w and colour illustrations. "This Second Edition covers painting to 1980. A long final chapter treats a crucial fifteen years when there developed in Canada a tremendous interest in other art forms and an apparent falling off of interest in painting. In fact the cry was hear - throughout the western world - that painting was dead. It turned out, however, that this was far from true. Dennis Reid discusses the work of established artists who produced steadily in the period - including Jack Bush, Jack Chambers, Greg Curnoe, Gershon Iskowitz, John Meredith, Guido Molinari, Jack Shadbolt, and Claude Tousignant - as well as new arrivals on the scene who have since joined the ranks of leading Canadian artists. Among the more recent painters discussed are David Bolduc, John Boyle, David Craven, Paterson Ewen, Ivan Eyre, Yves Gaucher, John Hall, Ron Martin, Michael Morris, Norval Morrisseau, Christopher Pratt, Shirley Wiitasalo, and Tim Zuck. Enriched by this overview, and by many additions to the original text, (this) is the widest-ranging and most authoritiative handbook available. Lucid, interesting, and informative, it is still a pleasure to read from first to last." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, very small bump on bottom edge of both boards. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.
