From Uganda we learn of the legendary Kintu, who won the love of a goddess and created a nation from a handful of isolated clans. The Congo's epic hero Mwindo is the sacred warrior who shows us the path each person must travel to discover his true destiny. Many myths reveal the intimacy of human and animal spirits, and Ford also explores the archetypal forces of the 'orishas' - the West African deities that were carried to the Americas in the Africa diaspora." JEAN AND LAURENT DE BRUNHOFF: THE LEGACY OF BABAR., Hildebrand, Ann Meinzen. (Jean de Brunhoff, Laurent de Brunhoff.)
7 Hildebrand, Ann Meinzen. (Jean de Brunhoff, Laurent de Brunhoff.) JEAN AND LAURENT DE BRUNHOFF: THE LEGACY OF BABAR.
New York Twayne 1991 0805782672 / 9780805782677 1st Printing Hard Cover Fine Fine
175 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w illustrations. "In her unique study of the Babar milieu, Ann Meinzen Hildebrand looks at the de Brunhoffs' complete works, analyzing the thematic development of the stories and commenting on the essential role of the illustrations. Acknowledging the differences between the work of father and son, Hildebrand attributes the series' continuing popularity to the way in which both artists have created an elephant cosmos that is a mirror of a real and ideal life. She shows how de Brunhoff 'pere et fils' have eschewed simple 'animal fantasy' for fascinating characters who respond to everyday situations, both tragic and frivolous, thoughtfully and act on the principles of perseverance, patience, hope, and courage. Hildebrand's comprehensive study establishes the genius of the de Brunhoffs and explains how one kindly, nondidactic elephant in a derby hat has become such a socializing force for young readers.'

13 Owen, Russell. THE ANTARCTIC OCEAN.
London Whittlesey House / McGraw-Hill 1941 Second Printing Hard Cover Good Fair Stephen J. Voorhies, maps.
254 pp, 9 1/4" H. Map endpapers. B&w photographs, maps. "The search for a land greater than the United States and Mexico began centuries ago, but it was not until a little more than a hundred years ago that an American sealer, Nat Palmer, first glimpsed its mainland. After the fanatic fumblings of explorers like Quiros, the discoverer-priest, hard-headed men pushed farther and farther south to learn what lay in the land of mist and snow. Captain Cook sailed around the land without seeing it; Lieut. Charles Wilkes, an American, sailed along its coast for 1,500 miles. Capt. James Clark Ross, the famous Englishman, broke into the silent sea which bears his name and for the first time brought back some knowledge of this great continent, with its high barriers of ice, its lofty mountain ranges and a live volcano, its tremendous beauty. Since then men have been to the South Pole on foot and in airplanes, have lived on ships fast in the ice and on the ice itself. Here are found the names of Scott and Shackleton, of Charcot and Amundsen, of Byrd and Ellsworth. (This) is the story of the almost incredible hardships men overcame because they were driven to rip the veil from one of the most majestic and fabulous regions of the earth." Pencil erasure mark at top of free front endpaper, previous owner's bookplate on verso of free front endpaper, very soft crease down preliminary pages, previous owner's stamp at bottom of page 100 and on one rear page, erased pencilled number on free rear endpaper, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light edge wear. "...throws light on the character and actions of this remarkable man through a chronological selection from Shackleton's own writings, public and private. Much of the material comes from his own books, 'The Heart of the Antarctic' and 'South', both long out of print, which recount the triumphs and disasters of the 'Nimrod' and 'Endurance' expeditions with the freshness and immediacy of the diaries on which they are largely based. Together with his poetry and letters - especially those to his wife, Emily - they build up to the lively self-portrait of a many-sided, complex and fascinating man...Christopher Ralling's biographical notes provide a framework for Shackleton's own words, setting them in their time." THE ART OF BABAR: THE WORK OF JEAN AND LAURENT DE BRUNHOFF., Weber, Nicholas Fox.
17 Weber, Nicholas Fox. THE ART OF BABAR: THE WORK OF JEAN AND LAURENT DE BRUNHOFF.
New York Harry N. Abrams 1989 0810918935 / 9780810918931 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+ Jean and Laurent de Brunhoff.
191 pp, 12" H. Bright red cloth with blindstamped Babar on front board, white lettering on spine, yellow endpapers. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, b&w and colour reproductions. "Babar was created by the painter Jean de Brunhoff, who produced the first seven books of the series between 1931 and 1937, the year of his untimely death. In 1946 his artist son Laurent took up where Jean had left off. He wrote and illustrated his first Babar book when he was twenty-one and has now done thirty Babar books. In bringing Babar back, Laurent was holding on to an enchanted childhood as well as keeping alive the legacy of his beloved father. The elephant actually had been the invention of his mother, Cecile, who thought up the first adventure one evening as a bedtime story for Laurent and his younger brother, Mathieu. In 'The Art of Babar' (the author) has worked with Laurent de Brunhoff to recapture aspects of the artist's childhood in France and the values that he grew up with. He has a lot to say about how both he and his father used watercolor, and the author has explored this technical aspect of their art. The reader is presented with the development from rough sketches to final illustrations; much of this material has never before been reproduced." Book is Near Fine. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.
