He directs a machine that produces mass-education, mass-entertainment, and mass-information for continuous consumption by millions of the peoples of this country and every overseas nation of the Commonwealth. (His life story) is here told in full for the first time, and makes sensational revelations of the career and character of this remarkable, but unknown man. (It) is superimposed on the background of the romance of radio itself, and which clearly shows how, for this man of destiny, the man and his destiny were being developed on parallel lines. Interesting glimpses are given of those who were creating the new science in readiness for the Reith era, and fascinating disclosures are made from inside the B.B.C. itself." 8 Arnup, John D. MIDDLETON: THE BELOVED JUDGE.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1988 0771007959 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
202 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "(T)he story of one of Ontario's and Canada's greatest judges, William Edward Middleton (1860-1948), who served as a justice of the Supreme Court of Ontario for thirty-three years, twenty-two of them as an appellate judge. At a time when a number of Supreme Court justices were belligerent to counsel and irascible toward their brother judges, Mr. Justice Middleton set a high standard of courtesy and civility that has carried on to the present day. Because (he) never sought attention or encouraged controversy, his contributions have been known heretofore only in legal circles. Yet here is a man whose written judgments are still cited fifty, sixty, even seventy years later, the judge who sat on 'the Great Stork Derby' case of the 1930s, and who decided which of the two litigious Kellogg brothers could sell his corn flakes in Canada. In addition, Middleton was a renowned botanist and legal scholar. The prison inmates of his Bible class knew him better and appreciated his exemplary character far more than the average citizen. (This book) is rich with anecdotage and presents important legal cases in a manner the general reader can understand and appreciate." Minor old tape residue at top/bottom edges of free endpapers, small corner crease on page 7, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, small ink mark on bottomm edge of both boards. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, one or two very tiny edge tears, minor rubbing.

EARTH EAGLES., Bayliss, Marguerite. Drawings by Norman Reeves.
10 Bayliss, Marguerite. Drawings by Norman Reeves. EARTH EAGLES.
Henry Holt, New York, 1947.
53 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Green & white illustrations. "This is a moonlit story that belongs to time-to-be. It has a horseman named Esme O'Hara, two spirited fillies named Rainbow and Golden Ripple, and it has fair K entucky for its setting. Here in a soft summer night 'the fastest horses that ever ran on earth ran the race of races'. Only a great lover of horses, blessed with understanding of that noble breed, blessed with skill in words and touched w i t h m y s t icism could portray the wonder of that race. No man had ever seen before or would see again such a contest; the contenders are Rainbow, crippled, unable to race and dead of a broken heart - and Golden Ripple, Rainbow's twin, in th e z en it h o f he r tr aining, primed for winning and alive as an electric spark. They raced in the summer moonlight, swift, rhythmic, and beautifully they raced - not horses, but earth eagles. They raced as they had when they were glossy foals, a s c ham pio ns , fo r p le asu re, until they found rest and peace together. If you love horses, read this; if you love Irishmen, read this; if you have a feeling for imaginative words, read 'Earth Eagles'." Two tiny ring dints on free rear end pap er, two tiny sp ec ks on r ear pas tedown, light edge wear to boards. Dust jacket has light edge wear, several very small chips, light rubbing soiling - mainly on rear panel, darkening to flap-folds and edges, two tears at top of front panel - ta ped on i nside . In this book he outlines the significance of developments in early jets. Beaumont is well placed to make such assessments. As chief test pilot, he made the first flights on fourteen new-type aircaft. He was test pilot on many of the first and second generation jet fighters and bombers, both Briti s h a n d American, as well as the first British supersonic aircraft. The core of the book is made up of the author's flight test reports on such aircraft as the Gloster Meteor, the North American B45, the English Electric Canberra, the English El ec tr i c Li gh tning and Britain's first supersonic bomber, the TSR2, a project which was cancelled before the aircraft went into production. 19 Due, John F. THE INTERCITY ELECTRIC RAILWAY INDUSTRY IN CANADA.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1966 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
118 pp, 10 1/8" H. Canadian Studies in Economics No.18. B&w photographs, maps, tables, graphs. "The intercity electric railway industry in Canada, which began in 1887, ended in 1959. Peak interest in the industry was between 1910 and 1920, the era of Sir Adam Beck's projected radial network that would have covered much of the southern portion of Ontario. But the plans came too late and the radial system was never built. The Canadian electric lines developed later than their United States counterparts, but lasted somewhat longer, and for a time in the 1950's there were more electric passenger-carrying trains in Canada than in the United States. This study describes the rise and decline of the electric railway industry in Canada. It includes a general history of the industry, the development of the lines, their financing and control, and a brief but fascinating account of the 25 individual companies which operated the roads." Tiny wrinkle at bottom of front hinge, tiny ink mark on rear board. Dust jacket has very light rubbing, small tear at top of front hinge - archivally taped.

Dundurn, Toronto, 1993.
112 pp, oblong (8 1/2" H x 11" D) soft cover. ISBN 1550022008 B&w photographs, reproductions. "From the early 1890s through the 1920s, Toronto was caught up in a dizzying transportation revolution. As horse gave way to machine, the look of Toron to and the lifestyles of its inhabitants were altered irrevocably. First there was the electric streetcar, then the automobile, and soon all manner of 'working' vehicles. Street railway tracks were laid, service outlets and dealerships sprang u p a cross the city, and the 'auto show' was born, an exciting new feature at the Canadian National Exhibition. (This) is a largely pictorial history of the city as it geared up for the 20th century, featuring vivid photos from the City of Toront o Ar c hi ves, many previously unpublished, as well as newspaper ads from the era. Images of fire engines, garbage trucks, automobiles, early aircraft, harbour tugs, and streetcars bring the reader back to a time when all this meant extraordinary c ha nge . Th e century was on the move and Toronto was moving with it. The photographers showcased in the book (William James, John H. Boyd, Arthur S. Goss, and Frank W. Micklethwaite) were also breaking new ground, turning away from the formality of the st udio to capture the city in transition, thereby establishing a permanent record - one that we can enjoy today." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - minor corner wear, two small soft corner creases. V ery Goo d+
