338 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "As a result of the dramatic Unilateral Declaration of Independence by Ian Smith and his Cabinet in November 1965, Rhodesia is now the centre of an international crisis, a focal point in a rapidly changing scene. But the act should not be seen as an isolated incident; it is part of a political and constitutional pattern which has developed gradually, and of which the outstanding feature is the division between Europeans and Africans. In thi s careful and thorough study Mr. Barber traces the various strands which make up this pattern, analysing the origins of this tragically divided society and its relations with the rest of Southern Africa, and giving a detailed account of the politi c a l developments since 1960 which culminated in the U.D.I." 427 pp, 8vo (9 1/4" H). "Through war, depression, and social upheaval, the first half of the twentieth century was a period of unprecedented turbulence in Canada. Beginning at the turn of the century, they consider the status of Canada in the empire and the world, the burgeoning growth of its economy, and the development of social and labour problems, up to the eruption of war in 1914. They discuss the political currents running through Canada during two wars, the interwar economic boom and depression, and the plans for post-war reconstruction, and assess the impact of these and other events on Canada's political, economic, social, and cultural institutions." 436 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "(This) portrait of James Chalmers McRuer (1890-1985), one of Canada's most outstanding jurists, sets out to discover the character of the man who played a key role in the evolution of Canadian law. His career of more than fifty years included service on the Archambault Royal Commission on Penal Reform from 1936 to 1938. He was appointed judge on the Ontario Court of Appeal in 1944, chief justice of the Ontario High Court in 1945, and from 1964 to 1971 he was head of the Royal Commission Inquiry into Civil Rights. From 1964 to 1977 he was chairman and later vice-chairman of the Ontario Law Reform Commission. The driving spirit behind McRuer was his passion for justice, rising from his conviction that the justice system should serve the oppressed, regardless of their ability to pay. As a law reformer, McRuer saw a pressing need to adapt the law so that it could better serve all people in the changed conditions of the twentieth century. He possessed a sharp sensitivity to the often hidden injustices existing in an advanced industrial society and a bureaucratic state." Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling.

In a breezy and colloquial style the author tells of his experiences in and around Banff, of his political life, experiences in the army during World War I, and his encounters with important visitors in the Canadian Rockies. B&w photographs, maps, reproductions. "John Prince was undoubtedly one of the most colourful individuals to reside in Upper Canada during the half century that preceded Confederation. (The mythology that had grown up around his memory in southwestern Ontario identified him as the product of an illegal marriage between George IV and Maria Anne Fitzherbert.) His eventful career as an attorney, politician, soldier, entrepreneur, and jurist caused him to become a legend in his own lifetime both in Essex County, where he resided at Sandwich from his arrival in 1833 until 1860, and in Sault Ste Marie where he spent the last ten years of his life as Judge of the Algoma District. In the legislature his independence and erratic individualism soon earned him the reputation of a political maverick. Business interests and entrepreneurial instincts attracted him to railway and banking ventures as early as the 1830s. Individualist and eccentric though he was, John Prince was still very much a man of his age." Minor wear at corners.
