HISTORY OF COLOR IN PAINTING. WITH NEW PRINCIPLES OF COLOR EXPRESSION., Birren, Faber.
9 Birren, Faber. HISTORY OF COLOR IN PAINTING. WITH NEW PRINCIPLES OF COLOR EXPRESSION.
Van Nostrand Reinhold, New York, 1965, second printing.
372 pp, 4to (12 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "Faber Birren, the noted color authority, surveys the color theories of the past and analyzes the paletes and techniques of painters from the Renaissance to the present. Showing the relationship between color theory and practice, he sets forth a new art of color based on modern scientific research in human perception. The first part of the books traces the development of color theory, presenting the views of such thinkers as Leonardo da Vi nci, Newton, Goethe, Brewster, Hering, Chevreul, Rood, Ostwald, and Munsell. The palettes used by many of the great painters are described and listed in detail. Modern color theory and color effects based on human perception are fully expl a i n e d a n d illustrated. A unqiue chart of artists' color samples duplicates visually the palettes of da Vinci, El Greco, Rembrandt, Turner, the Impressionists, and the Abstract Impressionists, enabling the painter of today to match the color ef fe ct s of th es e painters. The second part offers a comprehensive history of painting as seen through the discerning eyes of a color specialist; it contains a wealth of reference material which supports the creative principles outlined in the fi rst se ct ion . T his book is richly illustrated with 32 handsome color plates showing great paintings and more than 500 black-and-white illustrations, including 80 reproductions of paintings depicting famous artists and their palettes." Music for Regimental Quick March (The Garb of Old Gaul), Bugle Charge, and Regimental Quick March for Pipes & Drums (Highland Laddie). "At Waterlo o they charged the French shouting 'Scotland for ever!' and Sergeant Ewart captured the Eagle of the 45th French Regiment. As Napoleon exclaimed, 'Qu'ils sont terribles, ces chevaux gris', and he spoke from the heart: he was referring to t h e R o y a l Scots Greys. As it was at Waterloo, so it was at Balaclava where the Greys, as part of the Heavy Brigade, went through the Russians like a knife through butter; in South Africa, where they scattered the Boers like grass in the path of a sc yt he . T h e grey horses gave way to tanks in 1941 but the spirit of Sergeant Ewart lived on in the Second World War, and in no 'Grey' more so than Lt.-Col. Geoffrey Keyes, posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his daring raid on R omm el' s He adq uar te rs in North Africa. The story of the Royal Scots Greys - whether they are charging French, Russians or Germans as cavalry, or fighting in North Africa, Italy or North-West Europe in tanks - will stir the blood of every man who has e ver sold iere d a nd man y civilians besides." 153 pp, 7 3/8" H, hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations. "Enid Blyton did not mean to write this book. There were already four books in this Mystery Series, all about Roger, Diana, Snubby and his mad little spaniel - four books in which th e circus boy, Barney, was seeking his unknown father. In 'The Rubadub Mystery' he found him - and that was to be the end of the series. But the lovers of these 'Barney Books' begged so hard for yet another, that there was nothing for it b u t t o w r i te a fifth. So here it is, sure of a tremendous welcome, for here are all the well-loved characters again - with Loony the spaniel and Miranda the monkey, madder and more comical than ever! A winter holiday down at Rat-at-Tat Hou se , in th e s no w- cl ad hills, cut off from everywhere - and mystery and adventure spring up out of the snow! Who came knocking at night! Whose were the mysterious footprints in the snow? What was the wandering Snowman? What was hidden in th e c el lar ? 316 pp, 8 3/8" H. B&w photographs. "(T)he powerful and often thrilling story of a man who daily enters that lonely region beyond the speed of sound. A narrative of needle-nosed ships flying at blistering speeds, it is also the moving testament of a man risking his life to push back the frontiers of scientific knowledge. Like St.-Exupery, Bridgeman is capable of describing the vastness and beauty of the skies. But as America's foremost experimental test pilot, he is constantly aware of the multitude of technical information which he is called upon to use at any given moment. After the war, Bill Bridgeman left the Navy a restless man. Seeking action, he joined Douglas Aircraft as an engineering test pilot. Soon he was asked to take over the final stages of the Skyrocket testing program. The Skyrocket, a javelin-shaped experimental ship, was a challenge to Bridgeman. The story of his day-by-day life with the plane is the substance of (this book)." 185 pp, large 8vo (9 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs. ISBN 0869781790 "Apart from its importance as an historical narrative the story told in these pages by a 22-year-old soldier has the unique quality of experience freshly captured...the truth of a soldier's life in the critical battles fought in North Africa in 1941-42. It is a personal view of war with its boredom, its moments of terror, of tenderness and humour and its final realisation that war is not a glorious game. It is written from the limited viewpoint of a young N.C.O. with his self-doubt, his fantasies and his moments of despair. It chronicles the handful of men around him...a section of mortarmen, griping, idle, insubordinate...extra ordinarily light-hearted, never failing when courage was demanded - and finally dying together in the great and bloody battle of El Alamein which is the climax of the diary. Told in a day-to-day, sometimes hour-by-hour account, (this) is a book that will touch a responsive chord in the heart of every man who has borne arms - in any army...The diarist has edited the original here and there and added notes which give a picture of the acutal military situation, often unknown to the writer at the t ime.
