1 (Livingstone, David). Edited, with an introduction by I. Schapera. DAVID LIVINGSTONE. FAMILY LETTERS 1841-1856. VOLUME TWO: 1849-1856.
Chatto & Windus, London, 1959, first edition.
320 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. VOLUME II ONLY. "David Livingstone's letters are the most important source of information about his activities, beliefs and opinions. The present collection, drawn chiefly from family archives, c overs not only the whole of his career as a missionary in Bechuanaland, but also his first great crossing of the continent from Loanda to Quilimane. Extracts from a few have appeared in various biographies, but the great majority have never b e e n p u blished before. Vivid and sometimes extremely outspoken, they contain much detail about his relations with fellow missionaries, Boers and Native chiefs, and about his own journeys into the interior; they afford new insights into his re li gi ou s o ut lo ok, conceptions of missionary enterprise, scientific and linguistic interests, and medical knowledge." Very small dint and tiny stain on top of text block, soft crease/wrinkle on pages 25 to 28, very small red ink dot on front fr ee end pap er , sli ght browning to edges of text block, light wrinkling at bottom of spine, one tiny corner bump. 3 Bowyer, Chaz. BOMBER BARONS.
Barnsley, South Yorkshire Leo Cooper 2001 085052802X / 9780850528022 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
222 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs. "By the end of the Second World War, a grim total of 55,000 air crew of Bomber Command has lost their lives. This figure comprised no less than seventy per cent of RAF fatalities. Yet, unlike their more glamorous fighter pilot colleagues, very few bomber pilots or crewmen were familiar household names to the general public. However, within the ranks of the RAF itself, some individuals stood out gaining high reputations for their courage and leadership, a respect achieved regardless of the decorations they had won or the number of sorties flown. These were the 'Bomber Barons'. In this authoritative book, (the author) chooses a selection of these men. Some like Leonard Cheshire, Guy Gibson and Hughie Edwards, are today well known but others such as Nick Knilans, Syd Clayton and Jo Lancaster, are familiar only to those 'in the know'. For each, the author details their careers and relates episodes that reflect the qualities that made them outstanding. At the same time, the reader learns of the unfolding dramatic development of Bomber Command from the comparatively uncoordinated, non-cohesive raids of the early part of the war to the highly-trained and deadly offensive weapon it became under Sir Arthur Harris, from 1942 AOC-in-C of Bomber Command, and the Greatest Baron of them all." Small very light stain in margin of page 16. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, a few very tiny dints, very minor rubbing.

Somerton, Somerset Crecy 1992 0947554254 / 9780947554255 Hard Cover Very Good Good+
532 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2' H). B&w photographs, maps. "No. 2 Group was formed in Bomber Command to support the Army. After equipping with Blenheims it specialized in daylight operations. It engaged in the first raid of the war. After taking part in the Norweigan campaign, it was thrown into the struggle to save France. Heavy losses ensued during operations demanding great courage. A hazardous anti-shipping campaign took the Group to Malta. Night intruder operations were made against airfields, and fighter-escorted attacks on Occupied Territory continued until the 1944 Allied landings in France, where support to the invasion was subsequently given and an effective night interdictor campaign carried out. The Group mounted many spectacular operations, particularly when using Mosquitoes. This is indeed a story of immense courage. Based upon records maintained by Royal Air Force Commands, Groups and Squadrons together with personal accounts by those who flew with the Group, the book gives a detailed day-by-day picture of operations, their planning and execution, illustrated with detailed maps. Appendices give plentiful details of the aircraft, the squadrons and the Group's wartime effort." Three small dints on rear board, light rubbing. Dust jacket has three small dints on rear panel, large crease at top corner of rear flap/panel, light edge wrinkling, one tiny closed tear, light rubbing.

DONITZ AND THE WOLF PACKS., Edwards, Bernard.
8 Edwards, Bernard. DONITZ AND THE WOLF PACKS.
Brockhampton, London, 1999, reprint.
240 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1860199275 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "The U-boat, the submarine of the German Navy, was a hidden predator, which would steal up on its prey out of sight beneath the waves. T he tactics were much like the wild wolf of the forest, whose grey camouflage would keep it out of sight until it chose to attack. Just as the wolf was even more effective when it roamed in groups, cornering its quarry before catching it, so A d m i r a l Karl Donitz chose to use the grey hulls of his submarines in packs - 'wolf packs'. This simple yet stunningly successful tactic came very close to winning the Battle of the Atlantic and inflicted huge losses of Allied merchant and nava l ve ss el s a nd their crews. With the packs dispersing after an attack as quickly as they had gathered for it, defence against the strategy was fraught with difficulty and only the U-boats' inability to wage their warfare without surfacing gave th e A lli es a ch a nce of fighting back. In this empathetic and deeply researched volume, (the author) delves beneath the myths and legends of submarinal action and convoy protection to discuss the realities of wolf pack deployment. He explains wha t ca used Do ni tz to employ the plan and how close his scheme came to destroying Allied resistance. It is an account of a remarkable naval tactic, cunningly used with great brutality by men who themselves withstood awesome deprivation, secur ing the a dulat ion of the ir nation." Edge crease at top corner of last two pages, minor rubbing. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling. Very Good+/Near Fine

ISBN 0198228716 "...examines the formulation of British and American policy between 1945 and 1955 towards one of the most hated regimes of this century. The Franco question, though apparently not of the first importance in the evolution of Cold War policy, nevertheless haunted British and American governments during this period. It posed a problem which epitomizes the difficulty of dealing with pariah regimes. As such it highligh t s f o r h i storians the attempts of these two governments to straddle the contradictions inherent in the emerging dual system of the United Nations, or internationalism, on the one hand, and the older system of balance of power, played out by t he s u pe r po w er s as the Cold War.
