4 Bata, Thomas J. With Sonja Sinclair. BATA: SHOEMAKER TO THE WORLD.
Toronto Stoddart 1990 0773724168 / 9780773724167 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
341 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "In 1932, when young Tom Bata watched his father's coffin being lowered into his grave, he silently promised to abide by the wishes expressed in his father's 'moral testament': that the Bata Shoe Company was to be treated not as a source of private wealth, but as a public trust, a means of improving the liviing standards within the community and providing customers with good value for their money. At the time, Tom had no idea of the challenges he would face in fulfilling that promise. Not only was he ill-equipped, at age eighteen, to step into the shoes of an acknowledged business genius, creator of the largest shoe manufacturing and retailing organization in the world. Worse than that, fate was about to deal him a series of painful blows. The subjugation of his homeland, Czechoslovakia, by the Nazis was followed by an acrimonious family rift, the expropriation by Communist regimes of all his holdings in Eastern and Central Europe and, in other parts of the world, economic and political upheavals that threatened the survival of the newly resuscitated Bata organization. Yet Bata actually thrived on the sudden change and adversity. From his new home base in Canada he built, this side of the Iron Curtain, a global empire that employs 70,000 people and plays an important part in the economies of many developing countries. (This) is the story of the man, his family and their business." Remainder mark (dot) on bottom of text block, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and at top of rear flap, very light rubbing.

427 pp, 8vo (9 1/4" H). "Through war, depression, and social upheaval, the first half of the twentieth century was a period of unprecedented turbulence in Canada. In this lively and perhaps contentious survey, (the authors) explore the political and economic forces that shaped this era of change. Beginning at the turn of the century, they consider the status of Canada in the empire and the world, the burgeoning growth of its economy, and the development of social and labour problems, up to the eruption of war in 1914. They discuss the political currents running through Canada during two wars, the interwar economic boom and depression, and the plans for post-war reconstruction, and assess the impact of these and other events on Canada's political, economic, social, and cultural institutions." THE ADMINISTRATION OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE (241 BC - AD 193)., Braud, David C., ed. (Joyce Reynolds, W.S. Hanson, David C. Braud.)
7 Braud, David C., ed. (Joyce Reynolds, W.S. Hanson, David C. Braud.) THE ADMINISTRATION OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE (241 BC - AD 193).
University of Exeter Press, Exeter, 1993, reprint.
109 pp, 8 1/4" H, soft cover. Map, 2 plans. ISBN 0859892042 "The overseas empire which Rome acquired from the third century BC onwards was perhaps the single most important issue in Roman history thereafter, as the Roman city-state became ever mo re like a world-state. The empire had to be administered. This volume shows how, to a large extent, it came to run itself. In his introduction, David Braund examines the essential framework of the empire as it developed throughout the p e r i o d . H e draws attention to the impact of empire upon Rome itself - an impact that was not only social and economic but also political and ideological. Joyce Reynolds utilises neglected sources - particularly inscriptions - to present an a cc ou nt o f th e r ol e of cities in the life of the empire. W.S. Hanson formulates recent advances in archaeology in his discussion of Roman involvement in the creation of towns in non-urban areas of the western empire, most notably Britain. In the fi nal c hap te r , D avi d Braund presents the results of the latest research on the client kings and queens who bore much of the brunt of empire and who became, from Augustus onwards, ever more a part of the empire, obtaining citizenship and eve n se ats in the Rom an Sen ate by the beginning of the second century AD. A substantial bibliography is appended." SHAKER COMMUNITIES, SHAKER LIVES., Brewer, Priscilla J.
8 Brewer, Priscilla J. SHAKER COMMUNITIES, SHAKER LIVES.
Hanover, NH University Press of New England 1986 0874513626 / 9780874513622 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
273 pp, large 8vo (89 1/4" H). B&w photographs, tables. "Athough we know much about Shaker furniture, dance, textiles, and various artifacts, few books tell us about the Shakers as real people and the inner social workings of their sect. Who were the Shakers? What were their social, economic, and religious backgrounds? Why did they join this celibate, communal sect, and why did some leave while others stayed? What did they think of life inside the communities and the rapidly changing world outside? And, perhaps most important, when and why did the sect begin to decline, and how did Believers adjust to this decline? These are some of the questions Priscilla Brewer addresses in this engaging social history. Her highly readable general introduction to the Shakers challenges basic assumptions about the timing and reasons for the group's decline. Brewer studies the Shaker movement from its founding in 1774 to its last major public statement in 1904, restricting her work to the eleven Shaker communities in eastern New York and New England. (She) provides an inside look at Shaker life by recounting the group's social organization, the occupational roles of its members, the composition of its communities, and the operation of the Shaker hierarchy. Far from being a dry, sociological study, this book is filled with anecdotes and revealing stories related by the Shakers through the many writings they left behind." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, tiny foxing mark on fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket has minor edge wear and light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, slight fading to spine color.

RHODESIAN PERSPECTIVE., Bull, Theodore, editor.
10 Bull, Theodore, editor. RHODESIAN PERSPECTIVE.
London Michael Joseph 1967 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
184 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). Map endpapers, fold-out map showing land apportionment in 1965. "The first and major portion of this book consists of a factual account of some of the more important political, social and economic developments in Britain's colony of Southern Rhodesia from the time of the first European occupation to the present day. It draws on historical records, official reports and government statements to explain what the Land Apportionment Act is, why it was introduced, and what its practical effects are; to examine local government, the educational systems, and economic development in urban and rural areas; to analyse the effect which some of the past and present legislation has on the living and working conditions of black and white Rhodesians; and, in the process, to illustrate the political attitudes of Europeans and Africans, and the separate development of the racial communities. (It) collates much of the kind of factual material which used to appear regularly in the Salisbury journal, the 'Central African Examiner', before it ceased publication. UDI and the censorship imposed under the Emergency regulations in November, 1965, resulted in the 'Examiner's' December issue being heavily cut - about half the material submitted for censorship was banned. The journal's publishing company launched a court case to challenge the legality of censorship and so, by implication, of the Rhodesian regime, but this was unsuccessful and the December 1965 issue was therefore (its) last. The factual material in this book was prepared by former contributors to the 'Examiner' and edited by Theodore Bull, the sponsor and former editor of the journal. His own personal assessment of British policy on Rhodesia, before and since UDI, and the likely outcome of the present deadlock, forms the second part of the book. His conclusions are controversial, and readers of widely differing political views could be equally shocked by them, but they may stimulate a healthy reassessment of attitude towards the whole unhappy Rhodesian situation." Previous owner's place, date and signature on free front endpaper; slight bump at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, slight browning on spine and flap-folds, very light rubbing.

THE CANAL BUILDERS., Burton, Anthony.
11 Burton, Anthony. THE CANAL BUILDERS.
London Eyre Methuen 1972 413284107 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good+
230 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w photographs, reproductions, maps. "(T)he story of the men who, in little more than half a century from 1760, created a network of canals that revolutionised transport and represent-ed the greatest achievement in civil engineering in Britain since the Romans. In those few years between the opening of the Bridgewater Canal in 1761 and the coming of the railways early in the nine-teenth century, tens of thousands of men were involved in canal construction. They came from all classes of society - from aristocratic promoters like the Duke of Bridgewater to Irish peasants who came to dig. This book is the first to deal exclusively with the canal builders and to try to place them in the context of the social, economic, and political world of the eighteenth century, and draws skilfuly on contemporary documents, newspapers, pamphlets, and letters." Burton follows the story through the promoters (like Josiah Wedgwood) and the financiers, to the engineers (including Brindley, Telford, Rennie, Jessop & Smeaton) and the 'navvies' who actually did the digging, "from Cornwall to the Highlands of Scotland". Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, very light edge wear, a few very light rub lines on front board. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has very light edge wear/wrinkling, fading to spine color (title is still dark and legible), two small edge tears archivally taped, minor browning to inside top/bottom edges.

12 Burton, G. Allan. A STORE OF MEMORIES.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1986 0771017928 / 9780771017926 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
330 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "With warmth, wry wit, and surprising candour, G. Allan Burton relates the big and small incidents in his life, sometimes with nostalgia, sometimes with bite. His story starts in Toronto's exclusive Rosedale district, where, as a child, he discovered the twin passions of horse-riding and watercolour painting, passions that became the dual themes of his life. The first took him into the Governor General's Horse Guards, into the Allied Forces' dangerous campaign in Italy during World War II, and into a life-long love of fox hunting. The second took him into architecture and interior design and then into Simpsons where he worked his way from stockboy to chairman of the company. Throughout his business career, he kept a journal in which he recorded the critical events of Simpsons growth - the formation of Simpsons-Sears, the opening of new stores, and the innovative development of shopping malls in Ontario and Quebec, the frustrations of economic recession, and finally the explosion of the 'store wars' in 1979 where the Hudson's Bay Company and Sears, Roebuck of Chicago battled for control of this major Canadian company." Very light wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has one tiny tear with crease - archivally taped, a few areas of light edge wrinkling, minor edge wear, very light rubbing.

Toronto Natural Heritage 2007 1897045220 / 9781897045220 First Edition Soft Cover Fine
206 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs, reproductions, maps. "New Brunswick's enormous timber trade attracted the first wave of Scots in the late 18th century. As economic conditions in Scotland worsened, the flow of emigrants increased, creating distinctive Scottish communities along the province's major timber bays and river frontages. While Scots relied on the timber trade for economic sustenance, their religion offered another form of support, sustaining them in a spiritual and cultural sense. These two themes, the axe and the bible, underpin their story. Using wide-ranging documentary sources, includ-ing passenger lists and newspaper shipping reports, (this book) traces the progress of Scottish colon- ization and its ramifications for the province's early development. Who were these Scots? What factors caused them to select their various locations? What problems did they face? Were they successful pioneers? Why was the Scottish Church so important to them? In tracing the process of emigration, (the author) offers new insights on where Scots settled, their overall impact and the cultural legacy they left behind. (It) is the first fully documented account of Scottish emigration to New Brunswick." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - clean and bright.

17 Chandler, David, general editor. Ian Beckett, associate editor. THE OXFORD ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF THE BRITISH ARMY.
Oxford University Press, Oxford, 1994.
493 pp, large 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, maps, reproductions, color plates. "From longbow, pike, and musket to Challenger tanks, from the Napoleonic Wars to the Gulf campaign, the Duke of Marlborough to Field Marshal Montgomery, (this book) recounts the history of the British Army from its medieval antecedents to the present day. Drawing on the latest scholarship, this survey shows how British fighting forces have evolved over the last five centuries. The continuities revealed are sometimes surprising: narrow recruitment patterns, friction between soldiers and civilians, financial constraints and recurrent political pressure for economies are constant themes. Commanders, campaigns, battles, organization, and weaponry are covered in detail within the wider context of the social, economic, and political environment in which armies exist and fight." CHINA REVISITED, AFTER FORTY-TWO YEARS., Chiang Yee. (The Silent Traveller.)
18 Chiang Yee. (The Silent Traveller.) CHINA REVISITED, AFTER FORTY-TWO YEARS.
New York W.W. Norton 1977 03930879143 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Chiang Yee.
180 pp, 9 1/2" H. Illustrated throughout with the author's b&w drawings & calligraphy. "In 1933, Chiang Yee, then the governor of a district in China, was forced to leave his homeland after an argument with a warlord. The China he left was an unhealthy country: a weak central government unable to control the power of the warlords; a deteriorating economic condition; a reputation for corruption based on an ill-defined and unsatisfactory land-tax system; widespread illiteracy and famine. In 1975, after an absence of forty-two years, he returned to China. In this book he tells of his travels and records his impressions of the new China as compared to the China he left. In addition, his two grown daughters, who, along with their mother, remained in China, provide another perspective on China's progress. As Mr. Chiang travels through China, he tells of his visits to both well-known and less familiar landmarks; he describes the communes and factories of light industry which have been built in the last twenty-five years. He attends the May First celebration - the important festival of labor. But, above all, he contrasts the backwards country he left with the brand-new independent nation that has been emerging over the last twenty-five years. He points with pride to the accomplishments: 800 million Chinese living and working together in a united spirit; the feeling of peace and prosperity; no unemployment; sufficient food for all; great technical, scientific, and educational advances; increased literacy; universal medicare; and vast improvements in the status of women." Small faint scuff at top of fore-edge of text block, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket is price clipped, has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, some light waviness on front panel, very light browning - mainly at edges, small light stain at top edge of spine, two line indentations across spine, protected in a mylar sleeve.

Burlington, Ontario Windsor Publications 1988 0897812573 / 9780897812573 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
184 pp, 11 1/4" H. B&w and colour photographs, reproductions. "(The authors) describe Manitoba's beginnings as a fur trade empire under the Hudson's Bay Company. They depict the development of the province's resources and potential as a national priority when, in 1870, a very small Province of Manitoba was created to spearhead the development of a western agrarian empire. Working within a changing social and economic climate, entrepreneurs struggled to establish Winnipeg as the West's premier city, and situated that city as the hub of a transportation and distribution network that supported the province's heartland. Ranging forward, the authors' accounting of the province's role in agriculture, industry, hydro, mining, and tourism is given within the context of national and international forces. Roger Newman has prepared histories of selected Manitoba businesses and organizations whose contributions to the development of the Keystone Province should not go unrecorded."
