Toronto McClelland and Stewart 1986 0771013396 / 9780771013393 First Printing Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
336 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). Pictorial endpapers, b&w maps. "On a chill Easter Monday in 1917, with a blizzard blowing in their faces, the four divisions of the Canadian Corps in France did what neither the British nor the French armies had been able to do in more than two years of fighting. They seized and held the best-defended German bastion on the Western Front - a muddy scarp known as the Vimy Ridge. The French, who had lost 150,000 men trying to take the ridge, didn't believe it could be done. Nor did the Germans; even the British were skeptical. But the Canadians triumphed. They went over the top at dawn; by lunch time, most of the ridge was in their hands - at a cost of only ten thousand casualties. How could an army of civilians from a nation without a military tradition secure the first enduring Imperial victory in thirty-two months of warfare? The answer, as Pierre Berton makes vividly clear in his haunting account, was precisely that these men were civilians, with flexible minds unfettered by military rules." Minor wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket is price clipped, has very light edgewear/wrinkling.

12 Hennessey, Thomas. A HISTORY OF NORTHERN IRELAND, 1920-1996.
New York St. Martin's Press 1997 0312211120 / 9780312211127 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
347 pp, 8vo (8 13/16" H). Book club edition. "Founded upon the partition of Ireland in 1920, Northern Ireland experienced fifty years of nervous peace under the rule of a devolved government in Belfast. This government was representative only of the majority Protestant unionist community while the Catholic minority sought union with the rest of the island. The Protestant fortress held firm until the emergence of the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Movement in the late 1960s, following which the province subsided into the civil unrest widely known as 'the Troubles'. Hennessey's even-handed history attempts to understand the reasons for the long history of communal division, mutual suspicion, Catholic alienation, and Protestant siege mentality. It traces the sequence of events, decade by decade, in the history of the troubled province. The great value of the book, however, is in providing an overview of events since the outbreak of the Troubles up to and including the present uncertain peace process. It is the first comprehensive history of Northern Ireland for over fifteen years and brings a contemporary perspective to historical events, taking account of the scholarship which has developed in Northern Ireland studies over the last twenty years." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor rubbing, very light edge wrinkling.

CULTURE AND ANARCHY IN IRELAND 1890-1939. THE FORD LECTURES DELIVERED IN THE UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD IN THE HILARY TERM OF 1978., Lyons, F.S.L.
17 Lyons, F.S.L. CULTURE AND ANARCHY IN IRELAND 1890-1939. THE FORD LECTURES DELIVERED IN THE UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD IN THE HILARY TERM OF 1978.
Oxford Oxford University Press 1979 0192224931 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good-
184 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). "Irish history has traditionally been interpreted primarily in political terms as the struggle of an emerging nation to shake itself free of seven hundred years of English domination. The events of the last decade in Northern Ireland have led many people to realise that the reality is more complex, but this has left them if anything more confused than they were before. The purpose of this book is to trace concisely the outline of four conflicting cultures which co-exist in Ireland north and south. To bring their conflict to a focus they have been examined mainly within a narrow historical framework, the period 1890-1939 (defined by the two symbolic dates of the fall of Parnell and the death of Yeats), though there are some necessary excursions into a remoter past, especially in relation to Ireland. The underlying theme of the book is that no political solution has been or will be successful without a proper understanding of the intricacies of this interlocking pattern of cultures - Gaelic, English, Anglo-Irish, Ulster Protestant. The book is in essence an attempt to provide the historical basis for such an understanding." Previous owner's small stamp on front pastedown, a previous owner's name in ink and faint erased pencil marks on free front endpaper, very light liquid stain in top margin of page 19, minor edge wear, small corner bump, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor soiling on bottom of textblock.
