FUJIWARA TEIKA'S SUPERIOR POEMS OF OUR TIME. A THIRTEENTH-CENTURY POETIC TREATISE AND SEQUENCE., (Fujiwara Teika). Translated, with an introduction and notes by Robert H. Brower and Earl Miner.
5 (Fujiwara Teika). Translated, with an introduction and notes by Robert H. Brower and Earl Miner. FUJIWARA TEIKA'S SUPERIOR POEMS OF OUR TIME. A THIRTEENTH-CENTURY POETIC TREATISE AND SEQUENCE.
Stanford University Press, Stanford, California, 1967, first edition.
148 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Bilingual text (romanized Japanese and English) on facing pages, with annotations. "This is a complete translation of an important document of traditional Japanese poetics: the 'Kindai Shuka' of F ujiwara Teika (1162-1241), one of the greatest Japanese poets and critics. The work consists of a short critical essay by Teika and a carefully arranged sequence of eighty-three poems by other hands. His essay discusses the state of poetry i n t h e early thirteenth century and offers advice and standards for aspiring poets; the sequence of poems teaches the same standards by example. Despite the title, the poems are taken from the full range of Japanese poetry to Teika's time, wit h em p ha si s o n the precding three centuries. Pehaps the most striking characteristic of the sequence is the unique construction. As the translators demonstrate in their Introduction and commentary, the poems are linked by subtle techniques of as soc ia tio n a nd p rogression into a unified whole that can be read as a single long poems of more than 400 lines." Previous owner's chop mark (stamp) on free front end paper. " 'If there is no objection, I will take my Division tomorrow and go to Gettysburg.' With these words Major- General Henry Heth set in train the course of events culminating in the titanic clash around the small Pennsylvania town of Gettysburg. On 1 July two Confederate Corps swept towards this strategic crossroads as Federal troops fought a desper a t e d e l aying action. The men of the Army of Northern Virginia were the best in the Confederacy. Under Robert E. Lee they had whipped every Federal force sent against them, and they were confident this time would be no exception. As the firs t at ta c ks s we pt forward full of confidence they were met by a storm of fire. Judging from the determination of their bluecoated adversaries this was going to be no ordinary fight." WHEN THIS BLOODY WAR IS OVER: SOLDIERS' SONGS OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR., Arthur, Max. Introduction by Lyn Macdonald.
17 Arthur, Max. Introduction by Lyn Macdonald. WHEN THIS BLOODY WAR IS OVER: SOLDIERS' SONGS OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR.
Piatkus, (London, 2001), reprint.
130 pp, 8vo (8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations (contemporary cartoons, drawings, reproductions). "The poignant songs of the First World War still posses a haunting power; and here are the authentic lyrics of the songs - by turns funny, cynical, bawdy, angry, wistful - that the soldiers sang on the march, in the trenches, and in their rare moments of rest. The romantic yearnings of the early stages of the war - epitomised by such songs as 'It's a Long Way to Tipperary', and 'Keep the Home Fires Burning' - later give way to the bitter humour of 'Hanging on the Old Barbed Wire' and 'If the Sergeant Steals Your Rum, Never Mind!'. The soldier who sang these songs with such gusto were asserting ordinary humanity in the face of extraordinary inhumanity. Max Arthur has collected together the lyrics of nearly 100 of the best First World War songs, from Britain and her Australian, Canadian and American allies..." Small slight bump to bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkles. VG+/VG+

18 Ashe, Geoffrey. FROM CAESAR TO ARTHUR.
London Collins 1960 First Edition Hard Cover Good+ Good-
320 p, 8 1/2" H. "(A) study of the life and career of the historical King Arthur in so far as it can be traced through early documents and remains. (The author) begins with the decay of Roman power and its slow disappearance from Britain, while invasion, anarchy and warring small kingdoms take its place. Then comes a reversal of fortune without parallel in the dissolving Empire, when a western Christian military chieftain stems the Saxon tide and imposes a long truce. In this unique recovery, it is suggested, lies a previously unnoticed clue to the whole development of the British monarchy. The kingdom finally created by Alfred the Great and his successors turns out to have been decisively affected by the earlier achievement of Arthur and the failure of the first Saxon attempt at conquest. Piecing together his fragments of history to form the most vivid possible whole, Mr. Ashe explains how the great tradition of Arthur flowed into the Arthurian Legend, and shows how that legend, fantastic and romantic as it is, nevertheless embodies a profound historical insight." Very light edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, moderate browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling, a few tiny and small edge tears, a few tiny scuffs on spine, minor edge browning, protected in a mylar sleeve.
