1 Aiken, Conrad. SELECTED POEMS.
New York Charles Scribner's Sons 1929 First, limited edition. Hard Cover Fair Signed by Author
361 pp, 8 1/2" H. Green cloth spine with gilt lettering/decorative banding, patterned paper-covered boards. *Lacking the publisher's slipcase.* No. 3 of 210 copies, numbered and signed by Conrad Aiken on the limitation page. Aiken was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry for 'Selected Poems' in 1930. Inscribed on the front free endpaper: "For Adrianne / on the way to / Hollywood / from / Philip Merivale / March : 1932". Philip Merivale was born in India, began his acting and screenwriting career in England, later moving to Los Angeles. This book is from the library of the actor Raymond Massey and we presume the 'Adrianne' of the dedication was Massey's first wife, Adrianne Allen (m.1929-1939). Ms. Allen is perhaps best known for her role in Noel Coward's 'Private Lives'. Following her divorce from Massey, Ms. Allen married American lawyer, William Dwight Whitney (and Massey married Whitney's ex-wife). In 1957 she joined her daughter, Anna Massey and Philip Merivale's son, John Merivale, in the Broadway production "The Reluctant Debutante", playing Sheila Broadbent, mother of the character played by Anna. Many pages have not been opened and others have rough edges from opening, several edge tears (archivally taped) or pieces missing from margins/corners between pages 329 & 336 - no text missing, age darkening to edges of text block - especially top of text block, moderate to heavy edge wear to boards - more at corners, browning to spine, light browning and some thin brown stains on boards, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, line dent across bottom of text block, small bump at top edge of rear board.

OTHER LOSSES: AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE MASS DEATHS OF GERMAN PRISONERS AT THE HANDS OF THE FRENCH AND AMERICANS AFTER WORLD WAR II., Bacque, James.
2 Bacque, James. OTHER LOSSES: AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE MASS DEATHS OF GERMAN PRISONERS AT THE HANDS OF THE FRENCH AND AMERICANS AFTER WORLD WAR II.
Toronto Stoddart 1989 0773722696 / 9780773722699 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
248 pp, 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs and drawings. "In the U.S. Army prison camps of western Germany at the end of World War II, almost four million German soldiers were held prisoner outdoors, in barbed-wire enclosures, with little or no food and water, for many months. The French Army, which took some 630,000 prisoners from the Americans to use as reparations labor, starved and mistreated them so badly that likely 250,000 died. In the American camps, at least 750,000 died. Most were soldiers of the Wehrmacht who surrendered on May 8, 1945, but many scores of thousands were women, children and old men. The deaths were simply listed as 'OTHER LOSSES". In painstaking, wide-ranging research, the author has interviewed hundreds of prisoners, guards and army officers and has amassed many thousands of pages of evidence from Army archives in Paris, Koblenz, London, Washington and Ottawa. He was ably assisted by senior U.S. Army historian Col. Ernest F. Fisher. How the public was fooled, the U.S. State Department co-opted, the International Committee of the Red Cross deceived, the press negated, the U.S. Senate neutered, books censored, archives destroyed and senior officials inveigled into the coverup - all this is outlined in a work that destroys the genial myths about Allied war aims and exposes the sources of cynical Cold War propaganda that blamed the Russians for all the deaths among these prisoners." Slight bump at top of spine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very light browning at top/bottom edges of flaps, very light rubbing, tiny scuff on front panel.

8 Davis, Kenneth S. DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER: SOLDIER OF DEMOCRACY.
New York Konecky & Konecky 156852059X / 9781568520599 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
566 pp, 9 1/2" H. Undated reprint of the 1945 edition, c1999. A volume in the "Leaders of Our Time" series. "On June 6, 1944, a decisive day in the history of the Western World, the radio had been blaring reports of the progress of American troops on the Normandy beachhead since long before dawn. The man whose portrait is examined in this book had reached the supreme moment of his career. This work is a first hand account of Dwight D. Eisenhower from his early years in Texas through his military service in World War II. It documents his training at West Point, his tour of duty in WWI and then his meteoric rise as war leader and stateman in World War II. Extensive interviews that the author conducted with Eisenhower in London in the days leading up to the Normandy invasion shed new light on the strategic thinking that lay behind the momentous plans that were then being formulated. They also provide an intimate look at Eisenhower the man and the deeply held sense of values that would see him through the war and then later inform his tenure as president of the United States." "Lieutenant General Guy Granville Simonds was one of the Second World War's most dynamic strategists and commanded enormous respect from British generals such as Bernard Montgomery and Alan Brooke. The focus, though, is on Simonds's campaigns in World War II. Graham takes us from the rocky shores of Sicily to the fierce fighting in the Dutch polders, examining the military and political infighting that seemed to dog every hard-won mile of Simonds's successful march into the German Rhineland." 11 Hind, Andrew and Da Silva, Maria. GHOST TOWNS OF MUSKOKA.
Toronto Natural Heritage / Dundurn 2008 First Edition Soft Cover Fine
271 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "Explores the tragic history of a collection of communities from across Muskoka whose stars have long since faded. Today, these ghost towns are merely shadows - or spectres - of what they once were. Some have disappeared entirely, having been swallowed by regenerating forests, while others have been reduced to foundations, forlorn buildings, and silent ruins. A few support a handful of inhabitants, but even these towns are wrapped in a ghostly shroud. But this book isn't only about communities that have died. Rather it is about communities that lived, vibrantly at that, if only for a brief time. It's about the people whose dreams for a better life these villages represented, the people who lived, loved, laboured, and ultimately died in these small wilderness settlements. And it's about an era of history, those early heady days of Muskoka settlement when the forest were flooded with loggers and land-hungry settlers." 12 Holmes, John W. THE SHAPING OF PEACE: CANADA AND THE SEARCH FOR WORLD ORDER, 1943-1957. VOLUME 2.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1982 0802055419 / 9780802055415 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
443 pp, 9 1/4" H. "The establishment of the United Nations system at the conclusion of the Second World War was followed by a period of disillusion in the late 40s about the prospects of world order. With the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950 there came a regrouping of forces and revised calculations of what was possible. The first volume of 'The Shaping of Peace' described Canadian attitudes and policies towards international institutions as the Second World War ended. This volume is concerned with the developments in the decade after the war, with the changing Canadian concepts as they were shaped by events and challenges. Although principal attention is paid to the organs of the United Nations, other themes such as the establishment of NATO, the progress of the new Commonwealth, and the changing concepts of the North American relationship are analysed as essential elements in the Canadian search for equilibrium." 13 Johnson, David. V-1, V-2: HITLER'S VENGEANCE ON LONDON.
New York Stein and Day 1982 0812828585 / 9780812828580 First American Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
203 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, maps. "The full story of the year Hitler's guided missiles fell on London. Only five minutes from launch to impact - not even enough time to sound an air raid alert. They could not be tracked and they traveled too high and too fast to be shot down. - This is no scenario of World War III, but the story of the development of the Nazi's secret weapons and the devastation they wrought that, given a little more time, might have turned the tide of World War II. Seen through the eyes of the Germans who devised and launched these weapons, as well as the people on the receiving end, here is an unprecedented 'you are there' reconstruction of those times when the death throes of the Nazi empire claimed tens of thousands of Allied civilian casualties. (The author) interviewed eyewitnesses on both sides of the Atlantic while researching 'V-1/V-2', and he was given access to previously classified documents and photographs." Light creasing on spine, one tiny corner bump. Dust jacket has very light browning on inside of flaps and spine, two small tears archivally taped - one on edge and one on front hinge, very light rubbing.

16 Leckie, Robert. DELIVERED FROM EVIL: THE SAGA OF WORLD WAR II.
New York Harper & Row 1987 0060158123 / 9780060158125 Book Club (BCE/BOMC) Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good-
998 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). Map endpapers. B&w maps. "World War II eventually involved every major power in the world, and before it was over some fifty million people lost their lives. (This) is a complete political and military history of World War II. Written with the pace and sweep of a fine novel, it makes the period, its major leaders, and the events not only comprehensible but also alive and real. Robert Leckie begins his book with the punitive treaty of Versailles and the fumbling efforts of the Western democracies to cope with the rise of Mussolini and Hitler. He draws vivid profiles of the political leaders, generals, and admirals who created and fought the war; describes the battles; analyzes the military strategy; considers the economic and political factors; and tells of the daily lives of those who were engaged on the far-flung fronts and those who endured at home. Churchill, Stalin, Roosevelt, MacArthur, Tojo, Eisenhower, Montgomery, Rommel and many other fascinating individuals become live protagonists on the stage sets of such dramatic sites as Stalingrad, Tobruk, Guadalcanal, Dunkirk, Leningrad, Monte Cassino, Midway, Omaha Beach, and Iwo Jima. Readers of all ages will find Leckie's powerful, action-packed narrative both compelling and comprehensive, and they will gain fascinating insights into one of the greatest and most awful events in human history." Minor browning on top of text block, minor soiling on bottom of text block. Dust jacket has light fading to spine color, light edge wear, a few tiny edge tears - one with crease and taped, minor browning at edges.

MITCHELL: PIONEER OF AIR POWER., Levine, Isaac Don. Foreword by Lt. General D.C. Strother.
17 Levine, Isaac Don. Foreword by Lt. General D.C. Strother. MITCHELL: PIONEER OF AIR POWER.
New York Duell, Sloan and Pearce 1958 Revised Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good
420 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "The life of Billy Mitchell epitomizes the story of the development of air power, and the author presents this life against the background of an age that was revolutionized by the rise of the flying machine. Like Teddy Roosevelt, Billy Mitchell was the scion of a dynastic fam-ily, grandson of an empire builder, son of a United States Senator. At eighteen, he enlisted in the Spanish-American War. From that moment on his story belongs to the annals of his age. Mr. Levine has had access to the private files of General Mitchell, to the archives of the Mitchell family, and has also had the co-operation of many of Mitchell's closest friends and associates. The result is a fact-filled chronicle, with astonishing anecdotes, exceptional personal material, unknown pages of aviation lore, a story that brings to light striking facts and dramatic personalities. Franklin D. Roosevelt, Douglas MacArthur, Fiorello LaGuardia, General Arnold, and scores of others appear in new or little-known roles. Mitchell himself cuts a heroic national figure, the indomitable crusader, the pioneer as well as the prophet of air power." Contents: Foreword; Author's Note (New Edition); Father and Son; To the Philippines; From Alaska to Aviation; Musketeer of the Air; Flight to Victory; Blueprint for the Future; Disturber of the Peace; Flying Crusader; "A Bomb was Fired Today"; The Way of an Eagle; Stormy Petrel; What Price Heresy; Judicial Extravaganza; Man Against the Age; Postscript; Mitchell's Own Writings; Index. Crowood, Ramsbury, Marlborough, 2000, first edition.
192 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1861263198 Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour with photographs, drawings, diagrams, reproductions. "The Supreme Allied Commander in World War Two, General Dwight D. Eisenhower, on ce said that the jeep was one of the three tools that won the War, and today's Jeep Wrangler and Cherokee models are its direct descendants. The US Army requirement was for a light reconnaissance vehicle that would also provide light armou r e d s u p p o rt for the infantry. It needed to be able to travel off-road at speed and carry four people. Four-wheel drive and a powerful engine were considered essential, but the three initial manufacturers, Bantam, Willys-Overland and Ford, so on c h an ge d th e fragile lightweight buggy envisaged by the Army into the tough, quarter-ton truck we recognize today. It survived in harsh conditions with limited maintenance, carried loads in excess of its design limits and became a symbol of th e A ll ied fo rc es. Willy-Overland were able to acquire the post-war commercial rights to the Jeep, introducing their first civilian model in 1945. The CJ (for Civilian Jeep) series had to compete against ex-military Jeeps that were chea p to buy , bu t d espi te t his and other difficult trading conditions, new Jeeps found ready buyers. Since then Jeep has changed hands four times. Successive owners have evolved the range, but have stayed true to the original concept of a powe rful engin e, fo ur-w heel drive , go od gr o und clearance and supreme off-road capability. Bill Munro tells the full story of the Jeep, from pre-war Bantam to today's Wrangler, in this carefully researched book. Far from being just another histo ry of the m ilitar y Jee p, th is cov ers t he civ il ian Jeep in detail, and gives the reader a clear insight into the continued development of one of the world's most successful motor vehicles." 395 pp, large 8vo (9" H), soft cover. ISBN 0671871765 B&w photographs. "The Cuban missile crisis of October 1962 has attained the status of myth. According to conventional history, President John F. Kennedy was stunned to learn that Soviet Premi er Khrushchev had placed missiles in Cuba. Kennedy responded with an ultimatum: remove the missiles and maintain peace, or leave them and risk war. The world held its breath as the Cold War moved toward a frightening climax. Khrushchev bac k e d d o wn, and Kennedy achieved a major triumph. Using recently declassified documents, (the author) re-examines the U.S., Soviet, and Cuban posturing that led to the confrontation and presents evidence for a provocative new view of the crisis th at p e ne tr ates to the very heart of our illusions about the Cold War and the Kennedy mystique."
