THE WORLD GUIDE TO GNOMES, FAIRIES, ELVES AND OTHER LITTLE PEOPLE., Keightley, Thomas.
7 Keightley, Thomas. THE WORLD GUIDE TO GNOMES, FAIRIES, ELVES AND OTHER LITTLE PEOPLE.
New York Avenel 1978 0517263130 / 9780517263136 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
560 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H). B&w illustrations. First Avenel reprinting of the 1878 G. Bell edition. "Kelpies, Korrigans, Pixies and Peries, Deeves, Brownies, and Bugaboos - these are just a few of the fantastic figures you will encounter in this unique collection of fairy mythology. Gnomes, faries, and elves of every imaginable size, shape, color, and demeanor spring to life in this marvelously illustrated guide to the fairy realm. Just one glance at the extensive table of contents reveals the scope and variety of fairy folklore explored here - from Persian and Arabian romance to the mythology of Scandinavia, England, France, Germany, and Switzerland. In addition, the author includes sections dealing with the more obscure fairy folkore and tradition of Greece, Spain, Italy, Africa, and the Middle East. Indeed, (he) has left no stone unturned in accomplishing the task he set for himself: 'to collect, arrange and classify and give under one point of view the various ideas and legends respecting fairies and similar beings of the popular creed.' Taken from a variety of sources of popular myth and legend, (it) forms a rich compendium of the superstitions surrounding those enchanting lesser deities, 'the little people'. Not only does (he) explore every type and species, but he also traces resemblances and similarities among the fairy traditions of different countries. For instance, did you know that the Nis (Scandianavia), the Kobold (Germany), and the Goblin (England) are all names for one species, which appears in Scotland under the name of Brownie, and that the Brownie is a person of small stature and wrinkled visage, is covered with short and curly brown hair, and wears a brown mantle and hood? In addition, Keightley discusses the fairy tradition as it appears in major works of English literature, from the Middle Age epic of 'Beowulf' and Chaucer's 'Canterbury Tales' to Spencer's 'The Faerie Queene' and Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'." Light wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, two repaired small tears at top of spine. Dust jacket has several archivally taped tears - mainly at top of spine/hinges - one with creases, light browning at top inside of spine.

Vol. 1 The Legend of Huma: "For the first time, here are the mysterious origins and Oath to the Measure (of the fabled Hero of the Lance); treachery among the Knights of Solamnia; his love for the Silver Dragon; the fated showdown between the Queen of Darkness and the forces of Paladine. Only fragments of Huma's story survived the Cataclysm of Krynn - until now." Vol. 2 Stormblade: "Deep in the cavern kingdom of Thorbardin, the powerful Stormblade is secretly crafted by an elderly dwarf-master. A Kingsword, it is intended to break the deadlock among the ruling council of Thanes. When Stormblade is stolen and turns up years later, a series of exciting and deadly events are set in motion. Together, Galen, the great Solamnic Knight, Sir Bayard Brightblade, and a none-too-bright centaur named Agion must overcome the schemes and traps of a sinister illusionist known only as the Scorpion."
