How surprised these ordinary citizens would be to see that their little group has grown into an organization of over 3000 members in all parts of the country, in the United States and overseas. Twenty-two cities from St John's to Victoria have local chapters or 'Centres' of the RASC. Novices and naturalists, amateurs and professional scientists all play important roles in this remarkable success story. General readers will be surprised to find out what amateurs can learn from the sky, at meetings and through the Society's publications. Leaders of other volunteer organizations, educators looking for ways to promote greater appreciation of science, and local historians interested in the role of the Society in the life of their communities will find helpful ideas in this book. And members themselves will be better equipped to make decisions for the future through an appreciation of the development of the Society, its individual Centres and the men and women who have led them." THE LIFE OF DANIEL BOONE, THE FOUNDER OF THE STATE OF KENTUCKY. STORIES OF FAMOUS AMERICAN HEROES SERIES., Hartley, Cecil B. Introduction by G. Mercer Adam.
13 Hartley, Cecil B. Introduction by G. Mercer Adam. THE LIFE OF DANIEL BOONE, THE FOUNDER OF THE STATE OF KENTUCKY. STORIES OF FAMOUS AMERICAN HEROES SERIES.
Grosset & Dunlap, New York, n.d.
385 pp, 8vo (8 5/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Pictorial endpapers, colour frontispiece. "The subject of the following biography, the celebrated Colonel Daniel Boone, is one of the most remarkable men which this country has produced. His cha racter is marked with originality, and his actions were important and influential in one of the most interesting periods of our history - that of the early settlement of Kentucky. Boone is generally acknowledged as the founder of that State . H i s h aving explored it alone to a considerable extent; his leading the earliest bands of settlers; his founding Boonesborough, the nucleus of the future State; his having defended this and other stations successfully against the attacks of th e I nd ia ns ; a nd the prominent part which he took in military affairs at this period of distress and peril, certainly render his claims to the distinguished honor of founding Kentucky very strong. But Boone, personally, reaped very little bene fi t f rom hi s p at rio tic and disinterested exertions. The lands which he had first cultivated and defended, were taken from him by the chicanery of the law; other lands granted to him by the Spanish government were lost by his inattention to le gal f or ms; and in h is old age he was without an acre of land which he could call his own. A few years before his death a small tract, such as any other settler in Missouri was entitled to, was granted him by Congress. But he has left to his nu mero us pos teri ty a nobl er inhe ritance - that of an imperishable fame in the annals of his country!" 19 Rutherford, Ward. HITLER'S PROPAGANDA MACHINE
New York Grosset & Dunlap 1978 0448146274 / 9780448146270 First American Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good-
192 pp, 4to (12" H). Profusely illustrated in colour and b&w with photographs, reproductions. "Paul Joseph Goebbels, Hitler's Minister of Propaganda and Public Entertainment, refined the use of what he called the Big Lie to a fine art. Democracy was portrayed as evil, dictatorship as good. Books which did not conform with Nazi ideology were burned; radio broadcasts were made with the intention of cowing the German populace and frightening the peoples of the world. Mass rallies were staged in Berlin, Nuremberg and elsewhere to whip up enthusiasm for the military expansion of Germany and hysteria for the Third Reich and the Fuhrer. Magazines and newspapers played their role in a more subtle way, emphasizing Nazi triumphs and minimizing or obliterating criticism of the regime and its failures. Colorful posters were put up throughout Germany. Later the Nazis enlisted the support of other Europeans in the pan-German cause. All of these propaganda techniques were master-minded by Goebbels, whose genius in orchestrating propaganda in the mass media was acknowledged even by his enemies. In films, magazines, posters, rallies and speeches by Hitler and his followers, Goebbels developed a propaganda mechanism that has been copied by dozens of dictators since but never equalled in its cynicism and fury." Book is slightly cocked, has light edge wear - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light browning to edges of text block, light cigarette odor. Dust jacket has very light edge wear, browning at edges, light edge wrinkling, creasing at top 4" of front hinge, light rubbing.
