DIEPPE 1942: THE JUBILEE DISASTER., Atkin, Ronald.
2 Atkin, Ronald. DIEPPE 1942: THE JUBILEE DISASTER.
Macmillan, London, 1980, first edition.
306 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0333191870 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "At dawn on 19 August 1942, five thousand Allied soldiers landed at the French port of Dieppe in the first major test of the defence of the G erman-held coastline of Europe since Dunkirk. The codename given to the operation was 'Jubilee' and its aim was to capture Dieppe and the headlands which dominate the town, hold them for a few hours and provide the Allied war planners with t h e v i t a l information they needed about enemy preparedness for the Second Front demanded by the Russians to relieve their sorely-pressed armies in the East. In nine hours of carnage and horror 'Jubilee' became a disaster. A combination of ove r- ri g id p la nn ing, inadequate supporting firepower and - in the final hours before the raid - sheer bad luck, inflicted on the Allies one of their worst defeats in a war which was already going badly. British Commandos carried out the flank a tta cks a gai nst co ast al gun batteries which dominated the seaward approaches to Dieppe and one of these raids, led by Lord Lovat, was spectacularly successful. But the assault on the port itself and the beaches on either side of Dieppe, the t ask of t he Cana dian 2nd Div ision, was a disastrous and bloody failure....Ronald Atkin has pieced together the full story of that day at Dieppe from all sides - British, Canadian, German and French - and from sources which include official docu ment s and re ports and most graph ic of all, the reminiscences of the men of both sides who planned and fought in Operation 'Jubilee'. The result is a masterly account of one of the most extraordinary - and tragic - episodes of the Second World War." Mino r fi nger m ark o n fro nt fre e end paper, tiny fain stain on fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket has been price clipped, has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very light rubbing. Very Good+/V ery Go od

Somerton, Somerset Crecy 1992 0947554254 / 9780947554255 Hard Cover Very Good Good+
532 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2' H). B&w photographs, maps. "No. 2 Group was formed in Bomber Command to support the Army. After equipping with Blenheims it specialized in daylight operations. It engaged in the first raid of the war. After taking part in the Norweigan campaign, it was thrown into the struggle to save France. Heavy losses ensued during operations demanding great courage. A hazardous anti-shipping campaign took the Group to Malta. Night intruder operations were made against airfields, and fighter-escorted attacks on Occupied Territory continued until the 1944 Allied landings in France, where support to the invasion was subsequently given and an effective night interdictor campaign carried out. The Group mounted many spectacular operations, particularly when using Mosquitoes. This is indeed a story of immense courage. Based upon records maintained by Royal Air Force Commands, Groups and Squadrons together with personal accounts by those who flew with the Group, the book gives a detailed day-by-day picture of operations, their planning and execution, illustrated with detailed maps. Appendices give plentiful details of the aircraft, the squadrons and the Group's wartime effort." Three small dints on rear board, light rubbing. Dust jacket has three small dints on rear panel, large crease at top corner of rear flap/panel, light edge wrinkling, one tiny closed tear, light rubbing.

"A financial disaster prevented (Sir Michael Bruce) from following the family tradition of becoming an officer in the crack Royal Regiment known as 'The Gunners', so he enlisted i n the British South African Police. By the time he was twenty-four he had fought (and was twice wounded) at ill-fated Gallipoli and o n t h e w estern front through the Great War of 1914-19. Excitement dogged his footsteps as he sailed round the Horn in a windjammer; fought in a Brazilian revolution; crossed the Andes on foot; was nearly killed in a stampede of wild cattle; and w a s th e s ol e survivor of a gold-seeking hunt in the Amazon. Back in England, jobless, he did a stint as a reporter on a gossip 'sheet'; became a stunt actor, then press agent, in the movies; and in 1938, on the continent, established an under gro un d for J ew s f leeing from Hitler's persecution, subsequently himself falling into the hands of the Gestapo. Oldbourne, London, 1959, reprint.
270 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates. "On Sunday, 10 June 1940, the Rev. Donald C. Caskie, Minister of the Scottish Kirk in Paris, preached for the last time in four years, said goodbye to his congregation, locked the chur ch and joined the mass-exodus from the city. A Highlander, he denounced Hitler from his pulpit. He was on the Gestapo 'Black List'. After a perilous journey - he was mobbed by French villagers who thought him a German paratrooper and machi n e - g u n n ed from the air - he arrived in Marseilles and commandeered the British Seamen's Mission near the Old Harbour. There the adventures of 'The Tartan Pimpernel' began. Immediately contacted by Allied Intelligence Officers he was conscri pt ed t o se rv ic e. The Seamen's Mission became a vital link on the escape route for prisoners-of-war and soldiers escaping from Dunkirk. He fed, clothed and gave the men shelter before sending them through the Pyrenees with forged papers to Sp ain . He co lle cte d m ilitary information for the Allies. Denounced by a British traitor, Dr. Caskie was banished to Grenoble where he continued his work as an 'underground padre'. Arrested by the Gestapo and sentenced to death in a Nazi Court h e pa ss ed thr ough sev en p risons and was saved from death by a German padre. Throughout all his perils (he) was sustained by the Christian Faith and inspired by native patriotism. Still the Scottish Minister to Paris, he has saved the books in whic h h e r ecor ded t he na mes o f his guests of war. Among the legion of men he helped were Whitney Straight, the millionaire sportsman and R.A.F. ace, and Redvers Prior, M.P. 319 pp, 8 1/2" H. Map endpapers, b&w photographs. "In May 1940, the German army and Luftwaffe drove a beaten army back across northern France to the Channel coast, cut off all lines of retreat and smashed the only port within reach; even Churchill feared 'the greatest military disaster of our long history'. Everybody knows that a third of a million British troops did escape to fight again another day. Many know at what a cost in ships and lives the rescue operation was carried out. But the whole astonishing story of Dunkirk as a human experience, of what it really meant to be there, has never yet been told. Now Richard Collier has written a vivid and authentic account based on exhaustive research and hundreds of interviews in England, France and Germany. For the first time we have, not the verdict of a military historian nor the creation of a novelist, but a narrative based on the experiences of those who were there as the enemy drew closer and the bombardment intensified - the bewildered skipper of a Thames barge, the helpless civilian, the soldier on the beach, the exhausted Stuka pilot, the stoical and the terrified."
