2 Dezarrois, Andre, editor. Translated from the French by Philip John Stead. (Rene Mouchotte.) THE MOUCHOTTE DIARIES, 1940-1943.
London Staples Press 1956 First British Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Fair
221 pp, 8 3/4" H. Frontispiece. "This is the famous Rene who was transformed by three years of war from an unknown pilot of the Reserve into one of the great leaders of Free France in the air, Pierre Clostermann's hero and commanding officer. In 1940 Rene made his daring escape from Oran in an unserviceable plane seized from under the very noses of the authorities. This was a flight not away from danger, but into the thick of the Battle of Britain. He fought with the R.A.F. in Hurricanes and Spitfires, attacking enemy shipping, sweeping over France, giving air-cover to the Dieppe landing, duelling with the Luftwaffe. His exceptional courage and integrity, his powers of leadership and skill as an aerial tactician quickly won the admiration of his superiors. Rene's airborne career culminated at Biggin Hill where he commanded the fighter wing and it was he who shot down the 1,000th German plane recorded by the fighter group there shortly before his death. In the end, his greatest wish was granted, for he had written in his diary: 'If I am not to survive the war, let me at least have the satisfaction of falling to the enemy's fire'. The personal magnetism and sincerity of 'Commandant Rene' make (this) an original and valuable contribution to the literature of the war in the air." Small crease at top corner of pages 11 to 34, very light browning to free endpapers, very small light glue stain on free rear endpaper, tiny dent on fore-edge of pages 55 to 64 - tiny chip on page leaf 59/60, very light browning to top of text block, minor wrinkling at bottom of spine, minor rubbing on rear board. Toronto Robin Brass 1999 1896941095 / 9781896941097 First Edition Soft Cover Fine
198 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). B&w illustrations. "The formal duel, with its elaborate ritual and code of conduct, was once considered the 'honourable' way for self-styled gentlemen to settle disputes involving character and integrity. The law made no special provisions for duelling - the winner in a fatal contest was a murderer. But the prevailling sentiment that a duel was 'fair', and the fact that upper-crust combatants in the thinly populated 19th-century Canada were well-connected with the judiciary, meant that duellists usually escaped with little or no punishment. What is surprising is that so many came from the ranks of those whose job it was to uphold the law - lawyers, judges and politicians, including at least two future Fathers of Confederation and several chief justices. Hugh Halliday not only describes some of the most interesting duels that took place in Canada but looks at duelling in light of our human tendency to ritualize conflicts with codes of acceptable and unacceptable practice. He also examines the steps that often led to a duel, including the public 'posting' of allegations, or insults, that was frequently a part of the process." Appendix: The Irish Duelling Code. 6 Tarantino, Bob. Illustrations by Julia Bell. UNDER ARREST: CANADIAN LAWS YOU WON'T BELIEVE.
Dundurn, Toronto, 2007, first edition.
221 pp, 9" H, soft cover. ISBN 9781550027031 "Did you know that Canada's Criminal Code still has provisions outlawing the practice of witchcraft and 'crafty sciences'? Did you know that blasphemy is a crime in Canada? And did you know that putting a picture of a red poppy on your website could get you in trouble with the Royal Canadian Legion? Lawyer and author Bob Tarantino takes the reader on an entertaining and informative romp through Canada's legal labyrinths in a book that spotlights the country's past and present quirky, strange, but true laws and legal history. (He) examines odd statutes and arcane jurisprudence across the whole spectrum of Canadian endeavour from war and religion to sex and culture to politics and business. Frequently, he demonstrates the parallels between yesterday's prohibitions and today's trends such as the edict against duelling and the legalities of twenty-first-century hockey slugfests, or the confiscation of so-called 'crime comics' in the 1950s and the controversy surrounding violence in contemporary video games." Michael Joseph, London, 1956, first edition.
345 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Errata slip tipped in at title page. B&w illustrations. "(A) lively social study of the British officer and gentleman - naval and military - from the seventeenth century to the present day, when the Royal Air Force arrived to make its own charactestic contribution to the story. In late Stuart times he was a man with a personal stake in the country; in Georgian times he might well be a schoolboy (majors were flogged at Eton); and today he i s quite possibly a conscript. Here is a rounded study of the officer, with all his traditional virtues and foibles; of men who founded and defended an empire, often with small thanks from Parliament and less from the Treasury; of sprigs from t h e s c hools (and later from the crammers) who lorded it over beys and khans; of men who kept their own code of honour, worrying Parliament by their duelling and outraging 'The Times' with their practical jokes. The purchase system (with the a d ve rt is i ng o f regiments for sale in the 'Morning Post'), the jostling of captains and admirals for prize money, the rise of Sanhurst and 'The Shop', the oddities of mess etiquette, the determination of self-respecting officers never to be sen t to the St af f C oll ege, the collapse of the champagne standard, the snubbing of subalterns ('warts') and midshipmen by their seniors - these are some of the high spots in a rich history. Here, on parade, are the bluff 'tarpaulin' and the lispi ng ca valr yman , t he r anke r, the 'knut' and Colonel Blimp....down to the 'Two Types' of the Westen Desert." Christmas gift inscription on free front end paper, very light edge wear, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, book slightly co cke d, l ight brown ing to ed ges o f text block. Dust jacket has is price-clipped, has several tears archiavlly taped, very light browning, light wear at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light soiling, slight fading to spine color, small scuff on s pine, old tape r epai r at t op of front hinge, is 1/4" shoter in height than book - no obvious signs of the dust jacket being cut down.
