4 Cokinos, Christopher. HOPE IS THE THING WITH FEATHERS: A PERSONAL CHRONICLE OF VANISHED BIRDS.
New York Jeremy P. Tarcher / Putnam 2000 1585420069 / 9781585420063 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
359 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "There was a time when massive flocks of Passenger Pigeons blotted out the sun, and bright green Carolina Parakeets were so numerous that they looked, according to an early American pioneer, 'like an atmosphere of gems.' But these birds - as well as the Labrador Duck, the Ivory-billed Woodpecker, the Heath Hen, and the Great Auk - now live only as tantalizing but hazy legends. Driven by a desire to understand how and why this came to be, (the author) embarked on ten years of extraordinary detective work. Traveling from Bird Rock in the Gulf of St. Lawrence to Louisiana's tangled bayous in search of those who stalked these birds and those who tried to save them, he discovered strange stories and glorious quests, tales of scientific heroism and political stupidity, of inconceivable apathy and equally astonishing personal devotion. A compelling blend of science, history, politics, and memoir, (this) is a richly detailed and ultimately uplifting narrative of dedication, discovery, and wonder." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkle at top of rear panel.

A FOLK TALE JOURNEY THROUGH THE MARITIMES., Creighton, Helen. Edited with an introduction by Michael Taft and Ronald Caplan.
7 Creighton, Helen. Edited with an introduction by Michael Taft and Ronald Caplan. A FOLK TALE JOURNEY THROUGH THE MARITIMES.
Wreck Cove, Cape Breton Island Breton Books 1993 1895415284 / 9781895415285 Soft Cover Very Good
249 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs. "These are the folk tales from Dr. Helen Creighton's life journey through the Maritime Provinces, collecting songs and ghost stories and old cures - and folk tales. Helen serves as our guide, introducing us to storytellers, setting the scene of the telling - and then she lets the person tell it as they told it to her. The feel of the kitchen and the fish shed still cling to these stories. Some are long, really miraculous folk tales - miraculous in detail and in that they managed to survive. Others are the brief riddle or the tantalizing quick-telling that a folklorist can expect along the way. Helen kept it all. And read as a whole, the reality and intensity of those smaller pieces reveals their value in among the more finished, well-told tales. (This) is a Maritime treasure." Interior - crease at bottom corner of page leaf 89/90, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - slight bump at top of spine, minor rubbing, minor soft crease at top corner of rear cover.

8 Cremony, John C. LIFE AMONG THE APACHES.
New York Indian Head Books 1991 0880296526 / 9780880296526 Facsimile Reprint. Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
322 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). Facsimile reprint of 1868 edition. From the Introduction: "We have never striven to make ourselves intelligently acquainted with (the various tribes occupying the vast region which extends from the Colorado river on the west, to the settlements of Texas on the east, and from Taos in New Mexico to Durango in the Mexican Republic). Nearly all that relates to them is quite as uncertain and indefinite to our comprehension as that which obtains in the center of Africa. Those who were best informed on the matter, and had given it the closest attention, were, at the time - most unfortunately - the least capable of imparting their information; while those who were ignorant of the subject have been the most forward to give the results of their fragmentary gleanings. If this volume shall have the effect of bettering our present deplorable Indian policy, by letting in some light, it will accomplish the author's object." The author was "Interpreter to the U.S. Boundary Commission, under the Hon. John R. Bartlett, in 1849, '50 and '51, and late Major of California Volunteer Cavalry, operating in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Western Arkansas." Dust jacket has a few areas of very minor edge wrinkling.

11 Hood, Robert. Edited by C. Stuart Houston. TO THE ARCTIC BY CANOE 1819-1821. THE JOURNAL AND PAINTINGS OF ROBERT HOOD, MIDSHIPMAN WITH FRANKLIN.
Montreal Arctic Institute of North America / McGill-Queen's University Press 1975 0773501924 / 9780773501928 Reprinted with Corrections Hard Cover Fine Very Good Robert Hood.
217 pp, 11" H. B&w and colour illustrations, maps. "(In 1819, a) dedicated but ill-prepared group of Englishmen set out under instructions from the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty to seek for the Northwest Passage. They encountered every hardship and hazard during their two-year mission, a mission which culminated, almost inevitably, in the loss of many lives. One of those who died was a young midshipman, Robert Hood, who had, in spite of the many dangers and problems that beset the expedition, kept a remarkable and invaluable record, in words and paintings, of the experiences of this, the first Franklin expedition. Hood's journal, less formal and more lively than Franklin's official account, shows his appreciation of the beauty as well as the harshness of his surroundings and an awareness, unusual in his time, of some of the adverse effects on the native peoples and their environment of the coming of Europeans. His paintings are among the finest as well as the earliest records of the animals and birds of northern Canada." Dust jacket has minor edge wear, light wear and crease at top of spine, faint small line indentation on rear panel.

Toronto Macmillan Company of Canada 1957 Hard Cover Good+ Good- Maps by C.C.J. Bond.
277 pp, 8 3/4" H. Map endpapers, frontispiece, maps. "The Journal of Daniel Williams Harmon is one of the great basic documents of the fur trade and of Canadian exploration. In early corrupt versions it was printed several times but of recent years has become increasingly difficult to obtain. Here for the first time is the authentic text meticulously edited by a foremost authority on Canadiana. The journal begins on April 29, 1800, when Harmon shortly after his twenty-first birthday, 'under an engagement to the North West Coy.' left Lachine for the West in one of thirty canoes, all heavily laden with supplies and bound for the Company's central rendezvous and depot at Grand Portage on Lake Superior It ends on August 18, 1819, at Fort William with the entry: 'I have at length arrived at head quarters. In coming from New Caledonia to this place, which is a distance of at least three thousand miles, nothing uncommon has occurred. A few days hence, I shall leave this place to proceed to Canada. As I have already described the country between this, and Montreal, I shall here conclude my Journal.' Between these two entries are the observations of a man with a sharp and sympathetic eye and a gift for succinct description. His journal is a lively, often exciting, always informative, record of life in the wilderness." TALES OF THE AMBER RING., May, Milos. Translated by Vladimir Varecha.
17 May, Milos. Translated by Vladimir Varecha. TALES OF THE AMBER RING.
London B. Mitchell / Orbis 1985 0856135313 / 9780856135316 First English Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Petr Sis.
191 pp, 11 1/4" H. Translated from the Czech. Colour and b&w illustrations throughout. "These marvellous tales come from the faraway Baltic countries of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, as well as from Finland. They are full of earthy humour as well as heroism and romance. They range from court to farmyard, from heaven to hell. the characters are unusually true to life, even unexpectedly so. God Himself is portrayed as being sometimes grumpy, sometimes angry, and very human. The Devil and his cohorts appear frequently, sometimes tricking men, more often being tricked by them. One intriguing aspect of these stories is the way so many of them lead on to another: just as you think you have reached the end, something new happens, and the protagonist is off again. These are among the most intriguing tales ever set down for children, because they do not end with simple morals or easy solutions. Each story creates a world of its own, one which you are unlikely to have encountered before, or ever to find again." One tiny corner bump, small light scuff across fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of hinges and flap-folds, small soiling mark on rear panel, soft crease down rear flap.
