"(T)ells us about the Metis, who simply wanted the long-standing boundaries of their river-lot farms respected by the government as Ottawa divided up the land to sell it to homesteaders. It tells about the Indians, whose land had been sold by the government and tradition and self-support destroyed, and who were now literally starving while the government broke its promises or tried to tie them to concessions. It tells us of local government officials, who could not agree among themselves whether the Indians should be treated with discipline or with food. It tells us about the frightened settlers and townspeople, caught between the Indians and Metis they often sympathized with and the government they looked to for support. And it tells about the soldiers, who heroically set out to quell a rebellion, but whose greatest ordeal was the long train journey on which they were beset by freezing cold and extreme shortages of food." 7 Charters, Dean. Introduction by Angela M. O'Connell. MOUNTIE, 1873-1973: A GOLDEN TREASURY OF THOSE EARLY YEARS.
Don Mills Collier-Macmillan 1973 029734207 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good+
253 pp, 10 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "1973 marks the centennial anniver- sary of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. (This book is) a pictorial tour of adventure through those glorious early days. One hundred years is not long when we are talking about history, but a glance at these photographs shows the phenomenal growth of Canada during that period. And the man who laid the groundwork for this phenomenal growth was the Mountie. Without his work of pacification, the task of settling and civilizing the Canadian west could not have been carried out. The photographers who took these pictures must have been imbued with the same spirit of adventure that motivated the Mountie. The proof is here. Wherever the men of the N.W.M.P. went, the photographers followed. The results of their work are here, a fitting tribute to the men of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police." Tiny soft bump at top corner of pages 163 to end of book, previous owner's small label on front pastedown, very faint tiny foxing marks on bottom of text block, minor wrinking at bottom of spine. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has light edge wear/wrinkling - moderate on rear flap-fold, several edge tears (some with creases) archivally taped, light rubbing

HOPE IS THE THING WITH FEATHERS: A PERSONAL CHRONICLE OF VANISHED BIRDS., Cokinos, Christopher.
8 Cokinos, Christopher. HOPE IS THE THING WITH FEATHERS: A PERSONAL CHRONICLE OF VANISHED BIRDS.
New York Jeremy P. Tarcher / Putnam 2000 1585420069 / 9781585420063 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
359 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "There was a time when massive flocks of Passenger Pigeons blotted out the sun, and bright green Carolina Parakeets were so numerous that they looked, according to an early American pioneer, 'like an atmosphere of gems.' But these birds - as well as the Labrador Duck, the Ivory-billed Woodpecker, the Heath Hen, and the Great Auk - now live only as tantalizing but hazy legends. Driven by a desire to understand how and why this came to be, (the author) embarked on ten years of extraordinary detective work. Traveling from Bird Rock in the Gulf of St. Lawrence to Louisiana's tangled bayous in search of those who stalked these birds and those who tried to save them, he discovered strange stories and glorious quests, tales of scientific heroism and political stupidity, of inconceivable apathy and equally astonishing personal devotion. A compelling blend of science, history, politics, and memoir, (this) is a richly detailed and ultimately uplifting narrative of dedication, discovery, and wonder." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkle at top of rear panel.

"(R)econstructs America's first era of manned flight and brings back to life the famous and less-known aviators who became the nation's heroes: Charles Lindberg, whose achievement was the great event of the 1920s - Amelia Earhart, one of the many women 'aces' (the aviation industry encouraged women because, as pilot Louise Thaden put it, 'If a woman can handle a plane, the public thinks it must be 'duck soup' for men.') - Calbraith P. Rogers, who made the first transcontinental flight, surviving a dozen crashes, a broken arm and collarbone, and a score of wounds caused by the metal fragments of an exploded engine - and many others. The book provides a vivid picture of America in the first half of the century - its aspirations and concerns - as expressed in the exuberant and often utopian response to a major new technology." McDougall left his Ontario home in 1873 to seek his fortune in the West, first as a fur trader on the Fort Carlton Trail, and then for some fifty years as a merchant in Edmonton (population forty when he first arrived there in 1879). He experienced the Edmonton boom when the Klondike rush began and the decline resulting from the gradual abandonment of the overland route to the Yukon. A long hard climb to prosperity followed.
