Music for Regimental Quick March (The Garb of Old Gaul), Bugle Charge, and Regimental Quick March for Pipes & Drums (Highland Laddie). "At Waterlo o they charged the French shouting 'Scotland for ever!' and Sergeant Ewart captured the Eagle of the 45th French Regiment. As Napoleon exclaimed, 'Qu'ils sont terribles, ces chevaux gris', and he spoke from the heart: he was referring to t h e R o y a l Scots Greys. As it was at Waterloo, so it was at Balaclava where the Greys, as part of the Heavy Brigade, went through the Russians like a knife through butter; in South Africa, where they scattered the Boers like grass in the path of a sc yt he . T h e grey horses gave way to tanks in 1941 but the spirit of Sergeant Ewart lived on in the Second World War, and in no 'Grey' more so than Lt.-Col. Geoffrey Keyes, posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his daring raid on R omm el' s He adq uar te rs in North Africa. The story of the Royal Scots Greys - whether they are charging French, Russians or Germans as cavalry, or fighting in North Africa, Italy or North-West Europe in tanks - will stir the blood of every man who has e ver sold iere d a nd man y civilians besides." Very light cigarette odor, very light browning to edges of text block and in margins of pages, small bump to bottom ofspine. New York SMITHMARK 1996 0765197332 / 9780765197337 Hard Cover Very Good Near Fine Enrico Arno.
618 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w decorations by Enrico Arno, b&w photographs, musical notations. "(A) notable milestone in the collection and presentation of oral literature and traditions from black communities in the Western Hemisphere. It demonstrates the powerful cultural influence of Africa on this side of the Atlantic. (I)ncludes a wide array of orally transmitted traditions of the numerous, sometimes disparate, African-American cultures of the New World. Among these traditions are tales of scoundrels, heroes, rollicking adventures, friendship, and much more: songs, myths, myth-legends, epic-like narrations, and recollections of historical happenings. There are descriptions of cult life, around which many traditions and beliefs flow; of music and dance, which have an integral connection with traditional ways; and of the social scene in places where Africans and Europeans, or white and black ideas intermingled and became Afro-American. (This book) perceives the interconnections of cultural inheritances throughout the Afro-American region and the local divergences as well. Early sections of the book survey the traditions and oral literature of Spanish, French, and English-speaking islands of the Caribbean, and of areas of Central and South America inhabited by people of African descent. There follows an extensive section devoted to the tales, beliefs, recollections, songs, religious epics, and a wide variety of oral creations of blacks in the United States. The Appendixes include a number of African stories and descriptions that point up the impact of African traditions on the cultures of Afro-America. Very light browning to edges of text block, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

THE GREEN HOWARDS (THE 19th REGIMENT OF FOOT). FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES., Powell, Geoffrey. Introduction by Lt.-General Sir Brian Horrocks.
16 Powell, Geoffrey. Introduction by Lt.-General Sir Brian Horrocks. THE GREEN HOWARDS (THE 19th REGIMENT OF FOOT). FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES.
London Hamish Hamilton 1968 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good-
144 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w photographs, reproductions. "This is the story of the Green Howards - the county regiment of that region of infinite variety, the North Riding of Yorkshire. For just short of three hundred years it has been fighting its Sovereign's battles from the Irish and French Wars of Dutch William to the Malayan Chinese and Cypriot guerillas of yesterday. The Green Howards have had their share of failures as well as successes, but failures such as Fontenoy, Suvla and Gazala brought them nothing but glory. Included in their successes are such famous battles as The Boyne, Alma (where they stormed the Great Redoubt and captured the Russian drums which still are trooped on the anniversary of the battle, their Regimental Day), First Ypres, Mareth and the assault over the Norman-dy beaches. In the War of 1914-18, they won twelve Victoria Crosses, a number bettered only by one other regiment which had more than double the number of battalions fighting. But it is the little-known campaigns that are often the most interesting: the way in which they secured Ceylon for the Empire at a cost of 1,500 deaths from battle, disease and massacre; the assault on the cliffs of Belle Isle in 1761, performed in the manner of a twentieth-century commando raid; Eutaw Springs, the last battle of the American War of Independence and a British victory. This is not the old and often turgid type of regimental history but a lively little book which will appeal not only to the men who have served in the Green Howards - regulars, territorials and national servicemen - but to anyone who is interested in the past of this country. It deals not only with battles, but with the men who fought them and the reasons why they fought. And those who do not know the tale already will learn how the regiment gained its colourful name." Cigarette odor, light browning to edges of text block, tiny stain on bottom of text block, minor bump at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has been price clipped, has cigarette odor, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light browning - mainly on spine and flap-folds and edges.

17 Reynolds, James. Introduction by Padraic Colum. GHOSTS IN IRISH HOUSES.
New York Creative Age Press 1947 First Edition Hard Cover Good+ Good- James Reynolds. Inscribed
283 pp, 10 3/4" H. Boldly inscribed on half title page: "All good Fortune / James Reynolds", with double underscore and a star beneath. Map of Ireland on endpapers in shades of green and white showing location of the haunted houses. 9 colour plates, including frontispiece (collated), plus 16 full page b&w drawings and 4 smaller b&w drawings. **Please note: at some time in its life, this book has been "married" to a Bonanza dust jacket of the same or similar vintage that fits it perfectly - i.e. this is not the original dust jacket.** "With senses tuned to the cry of the banshee, no people are more intimate with spirits - both horrible and friendly - than the richly imaginative Irish. In this magnificently conceived and superbly executed book, James Reynolds, Irish-born painter, horseman, and traveler, has selected and retold twenty-two folk tales from a collection of more than two hundred gathered during his life in Ireland. He invariably captures the perfect note of eerie, the terrifying, and the comic in these paintings, drawings, and this subtly polished prose; for he is 'ghost-conscious' and 'castle-conscious', as Padraic Colum says, and can describe with the words of a poet what a painter sees. Here are ghosts and demons that have flouished from the tenth to the twentieth century - the horrible, gluttonous ghost of Jason Bannott, the harpies of 'The Ghostly Catch', the madly comic ghosts of the O'Haggerty twins - all the ghosts that midnight fancy shivers to imagine." Spine color has darkened, light browning to edges of text block, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, a one inch very light red pencil line on blank page 12, a 1/8" strip of browning at top edge of page 6, slight toning in page margins, very small paper slub on chapter title page 89. Dust jacket has light browning on inside, tear (archivally taped) at top of rear panel with soft crease; light discoloration on fore-edge of front flap, at top of spine and under wrinkles in laminate on rear panel, light browming at top edge, tiny closed tear on spine.
