OTHER LOSSES: AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE MASS DEATHS OF GERMAN PRISONERS AT THE HANDS OF THE FRENCH AND AMERICANS AFTER WORLD WAR II., Bacque, James.
1 Bacque, James. OTHER LOSSES: AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE MASS DEATHS OF GERMAN PRISONERS AT THE HANDS OF THE FRENCH AND AMERICANS AFTER WORLD WAR II.
Toronto Stoddart 1989 0773722696 / 9780773722699 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
248 pp, 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs and drawings. "In the U.S. Army prison camps of western Germany at the end of World War II, almost four million German soldiers were held prisoner outdoors, in barbed-wire enclosures, with little or no food and water, for many months. The French Army, which took some 630,000 prisoners from the Americans to use as reparations labor, starved and mistreated them so badly that likely 250,000 died. In the American camps, at least 750,000 died. Most were soldiers of the Wehrmacht who surrendered on May 8, 1945, but many scores of thousands were women, children and old men. The deaths were simply listed as 'OTHER LOSSES". In painstaking, wide-ranging research, the author has interviewed hundreds of prisoners, guards and army officers and has amassed many thousands of pages of evidence from Army archives in Paris, Koblenz, London, Washington and Ottawa. He was ably assisted by senior U.S. Army historian Col. Ernest F. Fisher. How the public was fooled, the U.S. State Department co-opted, the International Committee of the Red Cross deceived, the press negated, the U.S. Senate neutered, books censored, archives destroyed and senior officials inveigled into the coverup - all this is outlined in a work that destroys the genial myths about Allied war aims and exposes the sources of cynical Cold War propaganda that blamed the Russians for all the deaths among these prisoners." Slight bump at top of spine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very light browning at top/bottom edges of flaps, very light rubbing, tiny scuff on front panel.

THE IMPRESSIONIST AND THE CITY: PISSARRO'S SERIES PAINTINGS., Brettell, Richard R. and Pissarro, Joachim. Edited by Mary Anne Stevens.
2 Brettell, Richard R. and Pissarro, Joachim. Edited by Mary Anne Stevens. THE IMPRESSIONIST AND THE CITY: PISSARRO'S SERIES PAINTINGS.
Museum of Art, Dallas, 1993.
230 pp, 4to (11 5/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket and publisher's plain cardboard slipcase. ISBN 0300053509 Profusely illustrated with color reproductions. "In the final decade of his life Camille Pissarro abandoned his experimentation with Neo -Impressionist technique and developed new forms of pictorial expression that drew more on the Impressionism of his earlier career. During this period - from 1893 to 1903 - Pissarro, besides continuing to explore the landscape genre that had b e e n h is main subject-matter, also began to grapple with urban scenes, and his paintings of Paris, Rouen and the busy ports of Dieppe and Le Havre became an important component of his artistic output. At this time, Pissarro, like Monet, starte d to w or k o n canvas in series, often painting six or seven canvases simultaneously and discarding one temporarily when the light, the traffic, the weather or his mood altered. He started all of them at the scene, in the manner perfected by the I mpr ess ion is ts, and worked with extraordinary speed and deftness. By 1899, he was living part-time in Paris and, from his combined studio and living space, painted a series that included over forty views of the same motif. (The authors) beg in this bea utif ul book on Pissarro's cityscapes by setting the paintings in their broad art-historical context, tracing the tradition of the image of the city both within and prior to Impressionism and looking also at contemporary treatments of the urba n sce ne. (Th ey) e xamine the history of the representation of the city in the literature, poetry and philosophical writings of the nineteenth century and discuss Pissarro's knowledge of these alternative theories of the city. Using Piss arro 's ext ensive cor resp ondenc e from this period of his life, they describe the artist's attitudes towards his final works. The book also includes a catalogue of Pissarro's eleven urban series, each one introduced by an overview covering the histo ry of t he city scape pict ured an d the production, exhibition history, and early critical reception of the series. Full data of each painting follows." The catalogue of the 1993 exhibition. Slight waviness to fore-edge of text-block, min or rub bing on boards. Dust jacket has ver y minor edge wrinkling. THE SANDS OF DUNKIRK., Collier, Richard.
3 Collier, Richard. THE SANDS OF DUNKIRK.
London Collins 1961 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
319 pp, 8 1/2" H. Map endpapers, b&w photographs. "In May 1940, the German army and Luftwaffe drove a beaten army back across northern France to the Channel coast, cut off all lines of retreat and smashed the only port within reach; even Churchill feared 'the greatest military disaster of our long history'. Everybody knows that a third of a million British troops did escape to fight again another day. Many know at what a cost in ships and lives the rescue operation was carried out. But the whole astonishing story of Dunkirk as a human experience, of what it really meant to be there, has never yet been told. Now Richard Collier has written a vivid and authentic account based on exhaustive research and hundreds of interviews in England, France and Germany. For the first time we have, not the verdict of a military historian nor the creation of a novelist, but a narrative based on the experiences of those who were there as the enemy drew closer and the bombardment intensified - the bewildered skipper of a Thames barge, the helpless civilian, the soldier on the beach, the exhausted Stuka pilot, the stoical and the terrified." Previous owner's name stamp and date on free front endpaper, book is very slightly cocked, very light browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling, one small edge tear, protected in a mylar sleeve.

"Canada's declaration of war against Germany in 1939 marked the beginning of the most significant eighteen-year period in the history of this nation. By the end of the Liberal regime in 1957 the country had undergone immense growth in human and material resources. The experience of the Second World War had been followed by participation in the Korean War and ten years of the Cold War. The Great Depression had given way to a boom which had continued through the exchange crisis, serious inflation and minor recessions. In addition, new life had been generated in the arts. The new road which Canada chose to follow led directly to a new world of planning and management, of economic controls and social equalization." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. 7 Evans, Hilary and Evans, Mary. THE LIFE AND ART OF GEORGE CRUIKSHANK 1792-1878.
New York S.G. Phillips 1978 0875992277 / 9780875992273 Hard Cover Very Good Good George Cruikshank
192 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w reproductions. "When George Cruikshank died, (over) a hundred years ago, he was admired as an artist, respected as a reformer, loved as a man. But he had lived so long and created so much that few could discern any unity underlying the diverse creations of his seventy-year working life - creations ranging from a thumbnail caricature of Napoleon III ('it never reigns but it bores!') to the four-metres-wide 'Worship of Bacchus' which now hangs, dusty and neglected, in the storerooms of the Tate Gallery. For some he was the artist who showed us Oliver Twist asking for mroe; for some the whimsical delineator of elves and fairies; for others the fanatical reformer who drew 'The Bottle' to convert us all from the Demon Drink. Everything he created was a spontaneous response to the world he saw. It might be something trivial, as when he went on a day-trip to Boulogne - the only time he left English soil! - and memorialized the event in a masterly sketch of seasick travellers (which perhaps explains why the adventure was never repeated). Or it might be on a deeper level, as when he symbolises in 'The Drunkard's Children' all the horrors of modern industrial society. It is his ability to see the world both as it is and as it might be which is the greatness of Cruikshank, both as a man and as an artist, and this book sets out to reveal the continual development of his art as a reflection of his continual development as a man. It therefore takes the form of a running commentary on pictures which are themselves a running commentary on the artist's outward and inward life. From more than two hundred pictures, one of the widest selections of his work ever brought together, Cruickshank emerges, not just as one of the world's greatest illustrators, but as a visionary artist whose work, at first glance so light and casual, reveals a profound sympathy and understanding of human life." Minor bump at top bottom of spine, one tiny corner bump, some light rubbing on rear board. Dust jacket has light edge wear, moderate edge wrinkling - mainly at top edge, light fading to spine and flap-fold color, 2" puckered triangular closed tear and small puncture with associated rub line on rear panel, 1" tear at bottom of front flap fold, minor rubbing and soiling on rear panel.

"With its Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen, the French Revolution opened a whole new stage in the history of women, despite t heir conspicous absence from the playbill. The coming century would see women put in their place as never before, their subordination to men codified in all manner of new laws and rules; and yet the period would also witness the birth of fem i n i s m , the unprecedented emergence of women as a collective force in the political arena. The fourth volume in this world-acclaimed series covers the distance between these two poles. It gives us a vibrant picture of a bourgeouis century, dy na mi c an d ex p ansive, in which woman's role in the home was stressed more and more, even as the economic pressures and opportunities of the industrial revolution drew her out of the house; in which woman's growing role in the family as the cente r o f a ll mo ra ls an d virtues pressed her into public service fighting social ills...." 668 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "The OPP came into existence (in 1909) with a total strength of fifty-one men, of whom forty-four were constables deployed across the vast province. By the end of World War I in 1918, only twenty-six constables were still serving with the force, but returning veterans were sought for enlistment with the provincials and the force grew, assuming every-increasing responsibilities for policing the province. Liquor law enforcement during the rumrunning days of the 1920s, and the creation of a highway patrol in 1930 played major parts in the evolution of the provincial police. The story of the OPP includes tales of murder, sabotage, corruption, and political influences. There were relief expeditions to the north in the wake of devastating forest fires, and confrontations with hoboes, harvesters, and loafers. Violent crimes, jail-breaks, war services, and industrial disputes all had to be contended with, and not a few members of the provincial police were killed in the performance of their duties over the years. 'Hepburn's Private Army' and 'Drew's Gestapo' gave rise to much criticism of the provincials, and embarrassing Royal Commissions did little to enhance the image or the morale of Ontario's finest. Despite the challenges to its continued existence, the OPP has emerged today as one of the finest, best equipped, and most brilliantly led police forces in the world." "Montreal, Canada, was the sleigh center of the world in the 1920s and 1930s. No other city with so much snow was so wealthy or so dependent on sleighs for its daily life. Nowhere else could such variety and ingenuity in sleighmaking be found. Except for the sighseeing sleighs with their fur rugs and shiny paint - the only ones that exist today - none of these sleighs was used for pleasure. But what pleasurable sights and sounds they presented! Here then are the authentic sleights that Carlo Italiano watched, stole rides on and drew as a child. Borrowing from his sketchbooks and many happy memories, he has created a unique book: a work of art, an invaluable historical record and a memoir of a gentler past when the only street noises were shouts and sleighbells." 352 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). "Peter Byerly isn't sure what drew him into this particular bookshop in the Welsh town of Hay-on-Wye. Nine months earlier, the death of his beloved wife, Amada, had left him shattered. The young antiquarian bookseller relocated from North Carolina to the English countryside, hoping to outrun his grief and rediscover the joy he once took in collecting and restoring rare books. But upon opening an eighteenth-century study of Shakespeare forgeries, Peter is shocked when a portrait of Amanda tumbles out of its pages. Of course, it can't be her. The watercolor is clearly Victorian. Yet the resemblance is uncanny, and Peter becomes obsessed with learning the picture's origins. Peter follows the trail of clues across the centuries - from a raucous London tavern where the unscrupulous bookseller Bartholomew Harbottle plots against the 'upstart crow' William Shakespeare to the unfinished ramparts of an Oxfordshire mansion where a frustrated Victorian painter mourns his lost love and takes revenge on his book-collecting rival. Along the way Peter discovers his holy grail: a priceless literary artifact that could prove the truth about Shakespeare's identity. Fearing the book may be a forgery, Peter races against time to prove its authenticity, evading the clutches of a murderer, meeting a woman who may hold the key to the mystery of the portrait, and finally discovering the truth about his own past and precious Amanda." Book is very slightly bowed. Dust jacket has one minor soft edge crease.

" 'Bing' drew from front-line experience and, with his character 'Herbie', gave Canada's soldiers many a chuckle in a grim business where chuckles were at a premium. He followed the antics of the military in the United Kingdom, in Italy and Northwest Europe, and his cartoons scored a hit wherever servicemen gathered to discuss the issues of the day. The best of the cartoons published in the 'Maple Leaf', many of them still bright in the memory of the overseas fraternity, plus some brand new 'episodes', have been corralled in this, the first full-scale edition of 'Herbie'. 16 MacKenzie, David. Foreword by Pierre Berton. ARTHUR IRWIN: A BIOGRAPHY.

323 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "From 1925 to 1950 Arthur Irwin was the driving force behind the success of 'Maclean's Magazine', first as associate editor, then managing editor, and, finally, as editor. He had strong views on what it meant to be Canadian, and under his direction 'Maclean's' was moulded into 'Canada's National Magazine', mirroring the development of Canada as an independent nation in the twentieth century. In the years before the outbreak of the Second World War, he was at the centre of the Maclean company's investigation of defence contracting, or what has become known as the 'Bren Gun Scandal'. In the 1940s Irwin actively sought out writers of talent and potential and gradually added to the magazine's staff many Canadian writers who went on to distinguished careers, including Ralph Allen, Pierre Berton, Blair Fraser, and Scott Young. After leaving 'Maclean's' in 1950, Irwin was appointed film commissioner at the National Film Board, during a time when the board's survival was in doubt because of allegations of espionage and subversion. Irwin was the man called in to deal with the NFB's 'red scare', and, afterwards, he reorganized the board and moved its operations from Ottawa to Montreal. Irwin subsequently went on to a career as a diplomat: he was appointed high commissioner in Australia, and ambassador to Brazil and Mexico. In his last professional position he was publisher of an Victoria newspaper. This book, in describing a man who was profoundly representative of his times, and whose presence in major Canadian institutions was influential, captures the mood of Irwin's period and raises important questions about the roots of present-day Canadian nationalism and cultural identity." One small corner bump. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top of rear flap-fold, minor rubbing.

"She was born Mary Farmar, related to the Duke of Wellington, and grew up a rebel who believed that she was her mother's least favourite child. Like many girls of her background, she married for escape. - In the late 1930s, she began a fascination with Heinz Ziegler, a Czech university professor and wartime air gunner; his brother, Paul, later a Benedictine monk, also fell under her spell. - At the outb r e ak of the Second World War she was, as she put it, 'roped into Intelligence', where she worked on breaking codes. MI5 and her rackety life during the Blitz eventually inspired her novels ('Jumping the Queue', 'The Camomile Lawn', 'Not That Sort o f Girl', 'A Sensible Life', etc.), many of which were concerned with multiple wartime love affairs. She wrote about the atmosphere of the home front and how the imminence of death loosened inhibitions - her fiction was as sexy and as candid as s he wa s herself. She drew on her eccentric friends and her love of Cornwall and the West Country, while the darkness of her novels was illuminated by a caustic sense of the ridiculous. Her style has been described as arsenic without the old lace. (T his ) is a remarkable book about a woman who was courageous, sensual, talented and ruthless. Readers will enjoy her story not only for its witty anecdotes and devastating one-liners, but also for the intimate portrait it builds of a multi-layer ed p erso nality in which much was hidden." THE SKY SUSPENDED. THE STORY OF THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN., Middleton, Drew.
18 Middleton, Drew. THE SKY SUSPENDED. THE STORY OF THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN.
New York Longmans, Green 1960 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
282 pp, 8 1/4" H. Pictorial endpapers. "Here is a dramatic re-creation of England during those eventful days when Britain fought alone and when defeat of Britain would have been the defeat of hope. How close the batle was, how much hung in the balance and how that battle went is presented by the distinguished correspondent Drew Middleton who was reporting the events for the Associated Press. The forces at the command of the RAF - charged to defend the British Isles - were pitifully small in comparison to those of the German Luftwaffe, out to break the back of the English. An impartial military observer would have scoffed at the idea that so few would be able to do so much to so many. If the Luftwaffe had destroyed the RAF, there is no doubt that ultimately Britian would have fallen, little doubt that the history of the war and that of the world would have taken a different turning. How and why the tide of battle changed, what motives lay behind the German switch in tactics, what might have happened and came so close to happening - the story is superbly and dramatically told in (this) brilliant portrayal of a nation and a people battling for life." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor toning to edges of text block. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has light edge wear/wrinkling, very light rubbing, a few very small scuffs on spine.

144 pp, square (10 3/8" x 10 3/8"). Colour photographs. "(A) celebration of Ontario's heritage. Its many pictures provide a panoramic view of the province's architecture from the late 18th century to the Victorian era. Its text combines architectural description with the story of some of the people who built and used these buildings, including (no doubt) some local folkore along the way. In other words, it is not a book for scholars; but rather, a book intended for all people who love old buildings and a book which may help to inspire interest among those who may never have stopped to look at an old building before." Book is Fine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.
