THE BOY AND THE RIVER. OXFORD CHILDREN'S LIBRARY NO. 46., Bosco, Henri. Translated by Gerard Hopkins.
1 Bosco, Henri. Translated by Gerard Hopkins. THE BOY AND THE RIVER. OXFORD CHILDREN'S LIBRARY NO. 46.
London Oxford University Press 1967 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Lynton Lamb.
119 pp, small 8vo (7 7/8" H). The first edition of this title in the Oxford Children's Library series. B&w illustrations by Lynton Lamb, dust jacket design by Glenys Ambrus. Originally published under the title: "L'Enfant et la Riviere". "This is the story of Pascalet and the river that at first filled him with fear and curiosity and later, when he knew it better, became his friend. It ran beyond the flat French fields that surrounded his home, and though he was forbidden to go to the river, once or twice every year the river came to him. It came when the flood waters ran swiftly over the low fields almost to Pascalet's door; but it came more urgently and mysteriously in the shape of Bargabot, the poacher, whose tempting talk of the joys that awaited those who ventured down to the water's edge filled Pascalet with a longing to escape from the monotony of his quiet home and seek for himself the magic beyond the fields. One fine spring day Pascalet's chance came to explore the river. He found there all the dangers his parents had warned him against, and many beautiful things beside, but chief among all he found Gatzo - a boy of his own age - and together they launched a boat and floated away into a world of enchantment: Pascalet dreaming and fearful, Gatzo sharp and practical and brave." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, one tiny corner bump. Dust jacket has minor wear and light edge wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds. 369 pp, 8vo (8 7/16" H). Book club edition. "(S)howcases twenty beguiling tales for the child-that-was and the adult-that-is, penned by twenty of the most creative artists in contemporary American literature. Here dissected are the darker anatomies of the timeless, seemingly simple stories we have long loved. Here wonder and truth have serious bite. A lovelorn prince seeking his father's blessing concocts a fantastic tale of a witch, a tower, and lustrous long hair - A pair of accursed red boots punishes a beautiful dancer for her pride - A troll-killing, princess-rescuing warrior is compelled to consider events from his adversaries' point of view - In a blistering tell-all memoir, Goldilocks reveals the sordid truth about her brutal foster parent, Papa Bear - . Rich, surprising, funny, exotic, and unsettling, these twenty new yarns and poems offer exceptional new treasures - as they brilliantly reveal lusts and jealousies, foibles, hatreds, and dangerous obsessions, the things that slyly lurk in the midnight interior of oft-told tales." Contents: Introduction; Rapunzel; The Crone; Big Hair; The King with Three Daughters; Boys and Girls Together; And Still She Sleeps; Snow in Summer; Briar Rose and Witch; Chanterelle; Bear It Away; Goldilocks Tells All; My Life as a Bird; The Red Boots; Rosie's Dance; You, Little Match-girl; Dreaming among Men; The Cats of San Martino; The Golem; Our Mortal Span; Mr. Simonelli or the Fairy Widower; Recommended Reading. 6 Gottlieb, Julie V., Researcher DREAMCATCHERS: MYTHS AND HISTORY. (DREAM CATCHERS)
Etobicoke Prospero 1999 1552678458 / 9781552678459 Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
128 pp, 10 1/4" H. Colour and b&w photographs, drawings. "In Ojibway tradition, mothers and grandmothers netted tiny circular cobweb-like charms from willow and sinew. These delicate charms were not meant to last but were intended to protect newborn children from 'everything evil, just as a spider's web catches and holds everything that comes in contact with it'. The beauty of dreamcatchers is reflected in their symmetry and natural accents. For generations, they have been crafted by making a hoop out of fresh wood, and then weaving a web inside the circle of deer sinew or colored thread. The unbroken strand of web/sinew is symbolic of eternity. Good dreams are also helped into the sleeper's dream world by feathers and colored beads that are attached at the bottom of the web. Careful attention is paid to leaving a hole in the middle of the web; if this is neglected, healthy dreams cannot find their way through to the dreamer." Contents: The Ojibway People; The Legend of the Dreamcatcher; Dreamcatchers and Children; The Dream Quest; Contemporary Issues - The Spiritual Legacy of Dreamcatchers; How to Make a Dreamcatcher; Notes and Bibliography; Index. Tiny dint on top edge of rear board. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling, one very small edge tear archivally taped, a few tiny dints on hinges.

Charles C. Thomas, Springfield, Illinois, 1969.
459 pp, large 8vo (9 3/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "Since the discovery by Aserinsky and Kleitman of an objective indicator of dreaming sleep, there have been a plethora of studies investigating the physiological parameters of the dreaming a nd non-dreaming sleep states. However, there has been an unfortunate neglect of the psychological concomitants of these states in most of this work. A comprehensive symposium which would bring together workers interested in the psychology o f d r e a m ing with those who worked with the REM technique for the collection of sleep mentation seemed desirable if the understanding of the psychology of dreaming was to keep pace and be integrated with the ever-increasing physiological know l ed ge . Th is v ol ume reports on a conference which focused both on the classical views of the nature of the dream as seen in the light of the findings coming from the REM studies and on the current attempts at exploring the content of REM coll ec ted dr ea m s. Th e i nte raction between the participants, those who articulated theoretical statements about the psychology of the dream, and those who examined dream content in various experimental ways, lead to further reintegrative efforts on bot h si des ."
