"Come through the magic door with me, and sit here on the green settee, where you can see the old oak case with its untidy lines of volumes. Smoking is not forbidden. Would you care to hear me talk of them? Well, I ask nothing better, for there is no volume there which is not a dear personal friend, and what can a man talk of more pleasantly than that? The other books are over yonder, but these are my own favourites - the ones I care to re-read and to have near my elbow. There is not a tattered cover which does not bring it mellow memories to me." In this way he traces t he development of the submarine from the earliest experimental submersibles of the late eighteenth century down to the nuclear-powered monsters of today, describing in parallel the developments of underwater rescue operations and survival tec h n i q u e s ....The appendices include the most comprehensive and accurate list of submarine disasters ever printed, updated to June 1985, in the compilation of which the author has had the co-operation of the US, French, Italian, Danish and Japan es e Na vi es , as well as that of the RN Submarine Museum and the German 'U-Boot Archiv'." TAPESTRY OF WAR: A PRIVATE VIEW OF CANADIANS IN THE GREAT WAR., Gwyn, Sandra.

552 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "For some, like the aging man-about-town Agar Adamson, and the promising politician Talbot Papineau, the war was both the climax and the denouement of their careers. For others, like Harold Innis, just off an Ontario farm, the horror of the trenches changed the direction and purpose of their lives. For Vancouver secretary Grace MacPherson, war was a great adventure; for Ottawa socialite Ethel Chadwick, it was a wave that pushed her aside and left her stranded for life. For Max Aitken, better known as Lord Beaverbrook, it was an opportunity to be exploited. For Newfoundlander Owen Steele, it was an heroic duty that ended in a rain of bullets at Beaumont-Hamel. Sandra Gwyn has woven the intimate threads of these lives into a composite portrait that is overwhelming in its power." Minor wrinkle at top of hinges. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, tiny scuff on front panel.

Volumes 1-8 & 10 of the TimeWars Series, 6 7/8" H. The series revolves around a 27th century organization tasked with preventing time travellers from altering history. In the books, many people & events we consider fictional are real and vice versa and there are many references to famous literature and authors. 1. The Ivanhoe Gambit - 209 pp, 1984 first printing, ISBN 0441377629 - Sometimes Sergeant Major Lucas Priest wondered why he had enlisted in the U.S. Army Temporal Corps. Fighting in the Time Wars wasn't the easiest way to make a living. But a demented scheme to impersonate the King of England was threatening to change the course of history. Two army teams had already failed to intercept the madman. So Lucas and his men must clock back to the twelfth century to try and prevent an irreversible split in time." 2. The Timekeeper Conspiracy - 215 pp, 1984 second printing, ISBN 0441811361 - "Captain Lucas Priest, a seasoned veteran of the Temporal Corps, was dispatched to seventheenth century France. In the world of Cardinal Richelieu and the Three Musketeers, he must infiltrate the terrorist underground called the Timekeepers and put an end to their mad schemes forever." 3. The Pimpernel Plot - 211 pp, 1985 second printing, ISBN 0441664105 - Now Lucas is faced with the greatest challenge of his career: to readjust the events of the French Revolution and correct the blunder made by an agent of the Temporal Corps. Alex Corderro, in his first hitch in Minus Time, had caused the death of Sir Percy Blakeney, the English aristocrat who played a key role in saving French royalists from the guillotine. Someone had to impersonate Blakeney and carry out his task." 4. The Zenda Vendetta - 206 pp, 1985 first printing, ISBN 0441959156 - "In the kingdom of Ruritania, Prince Rudolf is about to be crowned king. Instead, due to the machinations of his half brother, he becomes the 'Prisoner of Zenda'. That was back in the 19th century. But history is about to repeat itself - with a twist. The Timekeepers, the terrorist underground from the 27th century, have traveled backward once again to try to sabotage the course of history." 5. The Nautilus Sanction - 196 pp, 1985 first printing, ISBN 0441565662 - "(T)he Nautilus, a Russian supersub armed with enough nuclear firepower to blow history apart at the seams, has been hijacked from the 27th century. Priest and his commandos clock back to pursue the sub, and come face-to-face with a man whose thirst for revenge is so great he would start the greatest war of all time - everywhere at once! To stop him, the Time Commandos have only the help of the Canadian fisherman, Ned Land, and a middle-aged French writer of voyages extraordinaires named Jules Verne - ." 6. The Khyber Connection - 195 pp, 1986 first printing, ISBN 04414375257 - "The year was 1897. The Khyber Pass echoed with the sounds of war. Soldiers from Britain, India, and Afghanistan were immersed in a bloody conflict. Enter the Time Commandos. Their mission: To foil a plot that has set timelines on a collision course. Only they can save the timestream from disruption - with a little help from a war correspondent named Winston Churchill - and a waterboy called Gunga Din." 7. The Argonaut Affair - 195 pp, 1987 first printing, ISBN 0441029116 - "A creature of Greek myth appears in the 27th century - proving that something is seriously wrong down the timeline! The Temporal Intelligence Agency fear an oncoming disaster of staggering proportions. Delaney, Cross, and their new partner Steiger clock back to the age of gods, monsters and heroes - into the heart of an epic quest. Lost in a legendary time and place, the future of two universes is in their hands!" 8. The Dracula Caper - 212 pp, 1988 first printing, ISBN 0441166164 - "A plague of vampires and werewolves falls on Victoria's England - but there's nothing supernatural about these creatures. They're genetically engineered monsters from the far future, dropped into the past as a devilish tactic in the Time Wars! It's a mystery more baffling than any penned by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle - a cosmic riddle to stagger the imagination of the great H.G. Wells. Soon the creators of Sherlock Holmes and 'The Time Machine' join forces with the Time Commandos to combat an ageless evil which strains the very fabric of the universe!". 10. The Hellfire Revolution - 192 pp, 1990 first printing, ISBN 0441812627 - "Boston, 1765. The freedom-fighting Sons of Liberty are under attack by a Tory secret society called the Hellfire Club. The club's leader - the headless horseman - is a ghostly creature seemingly invulnerable to blades and musket balls. His plot to assassinate Sam Adams, Ben Franklin and George Washington will detroy every dream of the Thirteen Colonies - and cancel the United States of America! Can the Time Commandos wage war against a phantom? And worse yet, can they stop a cosmic catastrophe that will make the Big Band look like a firecracker?" Interiors - light toning to pages in some volumes, volume 10 has a bookstore stamp on the first page, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. O.P.P.: THE HISTORY OF THE ONTARIO PROVINCIAL POLICE FORCE., Higley, Dahn D.
10 Higley, Dahn D. O.P.P.: THE HISTORY OF THE ONTARIO PROVINCIAL POLICE FORCE.
Toronto Queen's Printer 1984 0774389648 / 9780774389648 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
668 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "The OPP came into existence (in 1909) with a total strength of fifty-one men, of whom forty-four were constables deployed across the vast province. By the end of World War I in 1918, only twenty-six constables were still serving with the force, but returning veterans were sought for enlistment with the provincials and the force grew, assuming every-increasing responsibilities for policing the province. Liquor law enforcement during the rumrunning days of the 1920s, and the creation of a highway patrol in 1930 played major parts in the evolution of the provincial police. The story of the OPP includes tales of murder, sabotage, corruption, and political influences. There were relief expeditions to the north in the wake of devastating forest fires, and confrontations with hoboes, harvesters, and loafers. Violent crimes, jail-breaks, war services, and industrial disputes all had to be contended with, and not a few members of the provincial police were killed in the performance of their duties over the years. 'Hepburn's Private Army' and 'Drew's Gestapo' gave rise to much criticism of the provincials, and embarrassing Royal Commissions did little to enhance the image or the morale of Ontario's finest. Despite the challenges to its continued existence, the OPP has emerged today as one of the finest, best equipped, and most brilliantly led police forces in the world." Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top edge..

Toronto Stoddart 1989 0773722939 / 9780773722934 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
348 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "(T)he first complete portrait of Joey Smallwood - the most loved, feared and hated of Newfoundlanders who, through a singular will, not only changed his country's history but also held political power continuously, almost unchallenged, for twenty-one years and eight months. Smallwood was a man who, in his time, played many parts: a union organizer who became a strike breaker, a journalist who carried on a running battle with the press, a self-proclaimed socialist whose private friends included the right-wing premier of Quebec Maurice Duplessis, the Portuguese dictator Antonio Salazar, and the most controversial president of the United States, Richard Nixon. He trusted no one and believed that the only way to get somewhere was to take the wheel himself. It was this singleness of mind and purpose that saw him through two bitter and hard-fought constitutional campaigns that would see Newfoundland enter Confederation as our tenth province. Horwood cuts through the hype and half-truths, the anecdotes and legend, to get at the man and his times." Very minor wrinkling at top of spine. For the past 100 years Massey Hall has witnessed a dazzling human cavalcade: Winston Churchill, Betrand Russell, Anna Pavlova, Jack Dempsey, Glenn Gould, Dr. Spock, George Gershwin, Sir Wilfrid Laurier, Isadora Duncan, Stompin' Tom Connors, Rudyard Kipling, Sergei Rachmaninov, Thomas Mann, Charlie Parker, Tom Longboat, Igor Stravinsky, Eleanor Roosevelt, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Will Rogers, the Dalai Lama, and the Barenaked Ladies. All have trodden the boards of the Old Lady of Shuter Street, which has served as a kind of magic lantern displaying the tastes and passions of Canadians in the 20th century. Chronicles the personalities behind the building of the Hall and the formation of the world-renowned Mendelssohn Choir and Toronto Symphony. We meet Hart Almerrin Massey, the family patriarch who bankrolled the Hall and dedicated it to the memory of Charles Albert, one of his sons. And we encounter the genius of Dr. Augustus Vogt, the founder of the Mendelssohn, and witness the mastery and merriment of the Toronto Symphony's Sir Ernest MacMillan, a man Roberston Davies has said 'set new standards of taste, purged the repertoire, and demanded a new quality of attention'. In the end, though, it is Massey Hall that emerges as the chief character in Kilbourn's lyrical evocation of time and place." Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top of spine.

302 pp, 9 1/4" H. Pictorial endpapers, b&w illustrations. Through them, he revisits thrilling turning points in American history, including the single sniper shot that turned the tide of the Revolutionary War, the firearms designs that proved decisive at Gettsyburg, the 'gun that won the West', and the weapons that gave U.S. soldiers an edge in the world wars and beyond. This is also the story of how firearms innovation, creativity, and industrial genius has constantly pushed American history - and power - forward." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine. THE CREATURE IN THE MAP: A JOURNEY TO EL DORADO., Nicholl, Charles.
15 Nicholl, Charles. THE CREATURE IN THE MAP: A JOURNEY TO EL DORADO.
New York William Morrow 1995 0688146007 / 9780688146009 First American Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
398 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w illustrations. "In May 1595, a hundred Englishmen - 'gentlemen, soldiers, rowers, boat-keepers, boys, and of all sorts' - rowed up a river in South America in search of the lost golden city of El Dorado. They were led by Sir Walter Ralegh, forty years old, ready to hazard his fading reputation on this doomed gamble. Four hundred years later Charles Nicholl follows their trail into the strange terrain of this enduring international obsession. The journey begins with Ralegh's curious 'charte' in the British Museum and leads through the labyrinthine delta of the Orinoco River and up into the rugged Guiana highlands of southern Venezuela, the setting of Conan Doyle's 'The Lost World'. A night with a Warao tobacco shaman, an encounter with the jungle-hermit Laime, bush pilot Jimmy Angel's stories of earlier days, life in the shantytowns of the region's gold diggers - these color and deepen the book's intense recollection of that original Elizabethan expedition. In this vivid reconstruction, Nicholls blends historical scholarship with idiosyncratic reportage in a unique and fascinating mix." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has some light wrinkling at top of spine and top edge, slight fading to some of the spine and front hinge colour.

17 Snow, Hank. With Jack Ownbey and Bob Burris. THE HANK SNOW STORY.
Urbana University of Illinois Press / Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame 1994 0252020898 / 9780252020896 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
555 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "(Traces Hank Snow's) life from humble beginnings, through his emergence as an entertainer in Canada, the United States, and throughout the world, to his stature as one of the most influential figures in country music today. But more than a rags-to-riches memoir, this book presents Hank's life and career in his own voice, with remarkable candor and incredible detail. It provides the first extensive look at the early development of country music in Canada, reveals the inner workings of the music industry (including Hank's vital and unsung role in launching Elvis Presley's career), frankly discusses the nonglamorous side of stardom, and offers the reflections of an outspoken artist who has been professionally involved with country music for nearly sixty years. Through Ernest Tubb's intercession, he made his debut on Nashville's Grand Ole Opry. Disheartened by the lack of audience response, Hank nearly abandoned his dream. Then he recorded a song he had written, 'I'm Movin' On'. It climbed to the top of the charts, staying at number one for twenty-nine weeks. More hits followed, and his life and career changed forever. Over the years, Hank has entertained servicepeople on military bases in Korea, Europe, and Vietnam. Remembering his own (difficult) childhood, he established the Hank Snow Foundation for the Prevention of Child Abuse. (He was) elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame and to the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame." Minor twist to spine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling otherwise clean and bright.

POLTERGEIST! A STUDY IN DESTRUCTIVE HAUNTING., Wilson, Colin.
18 Wilson, Colin. POLTERGEIST! A STUDY IN DESTRUCTIVE HAUNTING.
London New English Library 1981 0450048802 / 9780450048807 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good-
382 pp, 8 3/4" H. "The Black Monk of Pontefract began disturbing the Pritchard family in 1966. Bangings in the night, objects flying across rooms, and a mysterious black-robed figure, whose appearances became more and more frequent. The police, the local MP and the vicar were all witness to the extraordinary happenings which continued to plague the household, and all attempts to exorcise the presence were met with mockery. In this definitive work (Colin Wilson) examines the recorded evidence of this and other famous poltergeists. Cases of hauntings have been recorded since ancient Greece and Rome. Poltergeist means 'banging ghost', because of their habit of making loud noises and throwing objects around. This book is not about Black Magic. But it is about the strange forces that surround us, and of which most of us are totally unaware. These forces may make us feel uncomfortable and may even terrify us, but there is not point in closing our eyes to them." Chapter headings: Professor Lombroso Investigates; Possession is Nine Points in the Law; Cases Ancient and Modern; The Black Monk of Pontefract; Fairies, Elementals and Dead Monks; The Black Magic Connection; Ghost Hunters and Ghost Seers; Speculations and Conclusions. A few very tiny light stains on title page, a 1"x3/4" area of surface paper loss at top corner of front pastedown - paper is glued to top corner of free front endpaper, small bump/wrinkle at bottom edge of pages 300 to 328, very small remainder mark on bottom of text block - migrates into bottom edge of some pages, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, one tiny corner bump, very minor foxing on top of text block. 312 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w and colour illustrations. "Murder - a dark, shameful deed, the last resort of the desperate or a vile tool of the greedy. And a very strange obsession. But where did this fixation develop? And what does it tell us about ourselves? (The author) explores this phenomenon in forensic detail, revisiting notorious crimes like the Ratcliff Highway Murders, which caused a nationwide panic in the early nineteenth century, and the case of Frederick and Maria Manning, the suburban couple who were hanged after killing Maria's lover and burying him under their kitchen floor. Our fascination with crimes like these became a form of entertainment, inspiring novels and plays, prose and paintings, poetry and true-crime journalism. At a point during the birth of the modern era, murder entered the popular psyche, and it's been a part of us ever since. (This) is a unique exploration of the art of crime - and a riveting investigation into the English criminal soul - by one of our finest historians."
