548 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. Of the 1,350 Victoria Crosses awarded since 1856, only 51 have been conferred on airmen. "Here, for the first time, are the complete and accurate biographies of each of those 51 men. Though primarily regarded as a British honour, of those 51 airmen, 16 were not British-born; coming from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Eire willingly to pledge their lives in Britain's cause during the two major world wars of this century. Resulting from several decades of private research on an international scale, and profusely illustrated, this book has undoubtedly become the standard reference work on the subject of air VCs. It also provides a lasting record of their lives and astonishing courage - a permanent tribute to every airman ever awarded a Victoria Cross." Very minor wrinkle at bottom of spine. 3 Busch, Wilhelm. Edited and annotated by H. Arthur Klein. Translated by H. Arthur Klein and others. MAX AND MORITZ, WITH MANY MORE MISCHIEF-MAKERS MORE OR LESS HUMAN AND APPROXIMATELY ANIMAL.
Dover, New York, 1962.
216 pp + publisher's catalog, 8vo (8 7/16" H), soft cover. Profusely illustrated with Busch's b&w cartoons. Bilingual text (English/German). "Wilhelm Busch (1832-1908), endowed with an equipotent facility with sketch-pad and rhyming dictionary, c reated during his career some of the most arresting sketches and drollest verses the world has ever seen. Few men since his time have shown the same ability to match simple yet penetrating pictures with rollicking, quotable verse. In his n a t i v e G e rmany he is still by all odds the best-loved creator of illustrated light verse....(Many of his pithy aphorisms have long since become folk sayings among the Germans.) The variety of tone and subject matter is wide: Busch is in tur n ma le vo le nt , j ov ial, sardonic, diabolical and even bloodthirsty as he castigates hypocrisy, stodginess, stupidity, egotism, drunkenness, and other human foibles....The English translations are both ingenious and faithful; in most cases they a re the fi rst En gl ish tr anslations ever made. Those who do not read German may be certain that the original has been translated into English with its spiciness and sense intact. Both the German and the English appear side by side, so that re ade rs o f Ge rman may sa vor Busc h's own delightful rhymes, while those who are learning German will find it an enjoyable way to gain familiarity with the langauge...." 5 Byng, John, Viscount Torrington. Edited by Donald Adamson. RIDES ROUND BRITAIN.
London Folio Society 1996 Hard Cover Very Good Anne Hayward.
505 pp, 8vo (8" H). Bound in quarter orange-brown buckram, Ann Muir marbled paper boards; dark brown endpapers. Plain dark brown slipcase. Frontispiece and 25 half-page and smaller b&w engravings by Anne Hayward, 9 maps by Denys Baker. A countryman at heart, Byng travelled throughout Britain on horseback whenever his position at the Stamp Office would allow him to escape from London. As a chronicler of the eighteenth-century, "Byng travels with an observant though never a roving eye. At times it is the eye of the modern photo-journalist, as when he records a meeting with Humphrey Repton, visits Sarah Siddons in her dressing-room at Birmingham, or glimpses Warren Hastings changing horses on his way to Daylesford. At other times his eye is more like that of the self-taught but well-trained artist, as when he admires the flickering tapers of Yordas Cave or the Kentish hop-pickers working in all haste among the twinkling lights of the hopfields. At Cromford in Derbyshire the bustle and brilliance of Arkwright's great cotton 'manufactory' even blind him to what he basically regards as the horrors of creeping industrialism: 'The cotton mills,' he observes, 'seven storeys high and fill'd with inhabitants, remind me of a first-rate man of war and, when they are lighted up on a dark night, look most luminously beautiful.' As is now widely acknowledged, (Byng) is one of the greatest British travellers of the eighteenth or indeed of any century. Not only has he produced an excellent travel guide (as, in a way, he intended to do); his work is also a major contribution to the social history of England and Wales - and especially Welsh social history. (This book) is, finally, a masterpiece of social observation, written with as fine an eye for detail as Jane Austen's and (like Pepys diary) superb in its delineation of its author's own character." Some light rubbing to paper on boards. Slipcase has minor rubbing and one very small edge bump.

6 Clayton, Aileen. Foreword by Air Chief Marshal Sir Frederick Rosier. THE ENEMY IS LISTENING. THE STORY OF THE Y SERVICE.
Crecy 1993 0947554289 / 9780947554286 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good-
381 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps. "The story is told by Aileen Clayton who was selected to work with the Y-Service, the branch of the RAF responsible for the interception of enemy communications, at the beginning of the war. Known at the time as 'Mike' Morris, she was the first WAAF to be commissioned as an intelligence officer and was the first to be awarded the MBE for her service in this field. Her account of the development of the Y-Service and its activities in the Battle of Britain, in the Western Desert, the Middle East and the Mediterranean is a major contribution to our knowledge of the intelligence aspects of the Second World War. It is also the dramatic and frequently moving story of a very young woman doing often dangerous and increasingly complex work in what was then very much a man's world, and of a body of talented, devoted and courageous men and women whose work frequently took them into front line conditions, whether they were suffering aerial bombardment on the South Coast of England, or advancing with the tanks in the Western Desert, or taking part in the landings at Salerno and Anzio. Because of the secrecy in which their work was shrouded during the war and for years afterwards their contribution to the Allied war effort has gone largely unrecognised. (This) is finally and above all a tribute by a remarkable woman to a tenacious and gifted band of men and women." A line of very small creases on front free endpaper, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of rear hinge. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, two corner creases on rear flap, rubbing on panels, three timy edge tears.

397 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs, drawings, reproductions. "(This) is a history, but it's also a love story, an unexpected unveiling of the first days of women's liberation in Canada, and a retrospective look at how more than 21,000 Canadian women convinced a federal government, a reluctant Army and a doubting Canadian public that they not only had the right to serve their country in time of war, but could be of valuable assistance as well." CAMDEN'S BRITANNIA: KENT. FROM THE EDITION OF 1789 BY RICHARD GOUGH., Copley, Gordon J., annotated and edited by.
8 Copley, Gordon J., annotated and edited by. CAMDEN'S BRITANNIA: KENT. FROM THE EDITION OF 1789 BY RICHARD GOUGH.
Hutchinson, London, 1977.
96 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0091252407 B&w reproductions, double-page map. "William Camden provided in his 'Britannia' a historical and topographical survey, county by county, of England - and to a lesser extent - of Scotland and Ireland. Since he travelled the country at the vital period when the monasteries had only just been dissolved and before the destruction of ancient monuments in the Civil War and later centuries, his book remains a primar y s o u r c e o f great value. Yet, to be restored to its full usefulness as a tool for the modern archaeologist, historian and topographer, it requires comprehensive annotation in the light of subsequent research. This immense task has been und er t ak en b y Dr G o rd on Copley, who has himself an enviable reputation in all three of these allied fields. He has collected and collated information from any sources, and personally travelled thousands of miles to visit the sites mentioned b y C am den as th ey ca n b e see n today. This opening volume of a series intended to cover the same ground described by the Tudor historian shows how much, despite the destruction of time and the vandalism of the developer, survives of our hist oric he rita ge. Not th e le ast of its attractions is the rich turn of phrase which makes the notes a joy to read, and rivals the quality of Gough's English verion of Camden's original Latin." Tiny dint on front free endpaper - migrates into preli mina ry pa ges. It is the summer of 1917, Britain is losing the war against the U-boats and Commander David Cochrane Smith listens to the delirious mumbling of a dying U-baot c ommander: 'Swordbearer'. Smith believes it is the code name for an operation, a threat to Britain, but nobody will listen to him. The threat haunts him. He meets a wild, beautiful, tragic girl and she solves a tiny part of the mystery, en o u g h t o set a clock ticking, counting down. Smith has come home with a bloody victory to his credit but he is still under suspicion of being reckless, a wild man, at best just lucky. He believes the answer to the U-boat lies in convoys but h e is g iv e n a f lotilla 'to take offensive action against U-boats and bases'. The flotilla turns out to be one ancient destroyer, a turtle-back 'thirty-knotter' known as 'Bloody Mary'. It is backed up by a 'ship of force', but that is no more t ha n a mo nit or , ne ar -new and with fifteen-inch guns. Her engines are defective, she is slow and spends more time in the dockyard than at sea. The flotilla is a sick joke; the two ships are the lepers of the Dover Patrol. With them Smith has to take on shor e b at ter ies and bigger, faster enemy destroyers. He has to fight the hostility of his commanding officer and is plunged into the world of espionage behind the enemy lines. 16 Kieser, Egbert. Translated by Helmut Bogler. HITLER ON THE DOORSTEP. OPERATION 'SEA LION': THE GERMAN PLAN TO INVADE BRITAIN, 1940.
Naval Institute Press, Annapolis, Maryland, 1997.
287 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1557503907 B&w photographs, maps. "During the summer of 1940, the world held its breath. The greatest operation in German military history thus far - an invasion of the British Isles - was Hitler's next logical step. After the rapid overthrow of France, Great Britain was the only opponent still left. In London, the invasion was considered absolutely inevitable. Joseph Kennedy, the American Ambassador, described an even darker scenario in his reports to Washington. He not only questioned the effectiveness of the military defence, but considered the island kingdom to be in such a state of decadence and decay that any moral resistance would collapse under a German a s s a u l t . All Britain was convinced that the Germans would come. They had nothing left with which to oppose the German panzers. In only five weeks the Germans had crushed France and expelled the BEF from Belgium. Now those panzers stood on t he C ha nn el c oast, waiting for the order to send them to England. But it was remarkably difficult for the German military leadership to come to a decision. Greatest haste appeared to be called for if the unique opportunity were to be seized a nd the wa r e nde d w ith a short campaign in England. The Kriegsmarine had already converted all available ship space for the transportation of troops and brought it to the Channel coast. By day and by night, German bomber and fighter formations fl ew i nto Engl and to b reak British resistance. The Luftwaffe was to create the primary condition for Operation 'Sea Lion' - gaining command of the air, without which a landing on the English coast was impossible. The fight developed into the 'Bat tle o f Br itain ', i n whi ch the very existence of Great Britain was at stake. If the German squadrons could not only gain the upper hand in the air battles, but also destroy the major ports and paralyse British aircaft industry, nothing mor e wou ld sta nd in the w ay of the i nvasion. Those events and the decision made during Britian's nightmare summer of 1940 receive a fresh and penetrating analysis in this book." 20 Mika, Nick and Mika, Helma. With Larry Turner. HISTORIC MILLS OF ONTARIO.
Belleville, Ontario Mika Publishing 1987 0921341083 / 9780921341086 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
208 pp, 11 1/8" H. Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w photographs, reproductions. "(C)oncentrates on Ontario's saw, grist, flour and woollen mills, beginning with some of the early mills built by government before the 1800s to supply the needs of Loyalist settlers who came to Upper Canada. Although these mills have long since disappeared, they have been depicted by contemporary artists and their portrayals have been reproduced. Enterprising pioneers and later immigrants and their descendants in the 19th century harnessed the magnificent water power of Ontario's rivers and creeks, and the mills they erected on their banks in various counties are featured (here) in text and pictures.
