256 pp, oblong 8vo (8 3/4" H x 10" D), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photos, maps, reproductions. "...provides a lively account of the organizational life of the Women's Institutes of Ontario. First established in 1897 in Stoney Creek, Ontario, the WI set out to improve the conditions of life for rural women through the promotion of domestic science education. That mandate soon expanded to include self-improvement, government lobbying, and community betterment. At the same time the organization spread geographically, with branches forming in virtually every rural community in Ontario, then across the country and around the world. Tracing that growth, this history concentrates on the activities of members in their own communities, and explains the enduring popularlity of the Women's Institutes...based on extensive research in provincial records, local Institute sources from across the province, and oral history interviews with dozens of members..." ARCHITECTURE IN ENGLAND., Daniels, Jeffery. Drawings by Leonora Ison.
17 Daniels, Jeffery. Drawings by Leonora Ison. ARCHITECTURE IN ENGLAND.
Weidenfeld & Nicolson (Educational), London, 1968.
128 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 298762102 B&w drawings, floor plans, elevations. "Illustrated with over 70 line drawings and plans, the text spans over 2,000 years of architecture in England. The account begins with a discussion of the villas, camps and roads of Roman Britain, and shows how this heritage slowly decayed, giving way to the Romanesque imported by the conquering Normans. The soaring Gothic of the middle ages yields in its turn to another E u r o p e a n influence, the Renaissance, which acquires its own English character. The Baroque, Pallandian and Neo-Classic movements are then analysed, and the survey is brought right up to date with the industrial and scientific revolutions of t he n in et ee nt h and twentieth centuries, and their effects on techniques and styles. Dominant architectural styles are fully defined and illustrated, and the many examples given will stimulate a study in depth by means of visits to churches, ho use s, cas tle s, mus eu ms and modern streets and office blocks. The special value of this book for the student of architecture is the care taken by the author to illustrate his text at every point, with examples drawn from every field of arch itec ture - eccl esia sti cal and secular, domestic and institutional." Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has one small closed tear, very light edge wear. Very Good+/Very Good

ENGLISH COURT LIFE, FROM HENRY VII TO GEORGE II., Dutton, Ralph.
19 Dutton, Ralph. ENGLISH COURT LIFE, FROM HENRY VII TO GEORGE II.
London B.T. Batsford 1963 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
232 pp, 9" H. B&w illustrations. "The atmosphere of a Court is enclosed and artificial. The monarch has in the past enjoyed a wide degree of power without a corresponding sense of obligation or responsibility; and for the courtiers, whose position depended on their agreeableness, flattery has always been at a premium just as frankness has been inhibited. How do men and women react in circumstances where normal standards of behaviour are inapplicable? This is the question which, by implication, Ralph Dutton answers in this book. Since his survey covers the three centuries from Henry VII to George VII it is natural that, in so many different courts and under the reign of so various a series of kings and queens, Court Life should appear in most of its possible forms. But in the moral forcing house of the Court a constant element, from 1485 to 1760, has been the tendency for personal virtues and defects of character to become exaggerated to an extent seldom met with in the prosaic outside world. As to the Courts themselves: the Coronations, Drawing-rooms, Progresses, Births and Funerals; the favourites, mistresses and politicians, and the palaces in which they met, intrigued and lived: as to all these, they provide Mr. Dutton with a rich topic on which to exercise his accustomed gifts for description, quotation and deprecatory comment." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, very light edge and corner wear, bump at top corner of front board - migrates as a small bump at top corner of pages up to approx. page 40, small store label at bottom of front pastedown. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor browning at top edge of flaps, small crease at bottom corner of rear flap.

ANGLO-AMERICAN RELATIONS AND THE FRANCO QUESTION 1945-1955., Edwards, Jill.
20 Edwards, Jill. ANGLO-AMERICAN RELATIONS AND THE FRANCO QUESTION 1945-1955.
Clarendon Press, Oxford, 1999, first edition.
291 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0198228716 "...examines the formulation of British and American policy between 1945 and 1955 towards one of the most hated regimes of this century. The Franco question, though apparently not of the first importance in the evolution of Cold War policy, nevertheless haunted British and American governments during this period. It posed a problem which epitomizes the difficulty of dealing with pariah regimes. As such it highlights for historians the attempts of these two governments to straddle the contradictions inherent in the emerging dual system of the United Nations, or internationalism, on the one hand, and the older system of balance of power, played out by the superpowers as the Cold War. Set as it is in the domestic and international context, it also exemplifies problems faced today by individual governments and by the United Nations in dealing with questions of intervention or non-intervention in distasteful regimes." Light bump to top of spine/rear hinge area. Dust jacket has very light rubbing, very minor edge wear, light wrinkling at top of spine/rear hinge area. VG+/VG+
