HISTORIC ARCHITECTURE OF THE ROYAL NAVY: AN INTRODUCTION., Coad, J.G. (Jonathan)
3 Coad, J.G. (Jonathan) HISTORIC ARCHITECTURE OF THE ROYAL NAVY: AN INTRODUCTION.
London Victor Gollancz, London, 1983. 1983 0575032774 / 9780575032774 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
160 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). Profusely illustrated in b&w with photographs, reproductions, plans, elevations, maps. "From the 1690s to the First World War, British maritime power, though often challenged, ruled supreme. It was a key factor in the nation's commercial growth which fuelled and underpinned industrial and imperial expansion. Central to the creation and maintenance of that supremacy were the royal dockyards, and the naval hospitals. Without these there could have been no Royal Navy, and Britain's modern history would have been very different. (This book) concentrates on the period from 1700 to 1900, with particular emphasis on the dockyards built to service the sailing navy. They are rich in naval and architectural history and were industrial centres in England well before the Industrial Revolution. They go far towards explaining how it was that Britain was able to maintain and sustain one of the greatest navies the world has seen. With numerous illustrations featuring surviving buildings in Chatham, Sheerness, Portsmouth, Devonport, Harwich, Gibraltar, Minorca, Malta, Bermuda and Antigua, (it) is a fascinating and important book." Tiny corner bumps, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

7 Gray, Edward. MANCHESTER SHIP CANAL. SUTTON'S PHOTOGRAPHIC HISTORY OF TRANSPORT SERIES.
Stroud, Gloucestershire Sutton 1997 0750914599 / 9780750914598 Soft Cover Very Good+
126 pp, 9 9/16" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "The building of the Manchester Ship Canal was hailed as the greatest engineering achievement of Victorian times. The dissatisfaction of Manchester merchants with high railway rates and excessive port dues charged on imports and exports passing through Liverpool led to a movement to excavate a waterway as wide and as deep as the Suez Canal, so that ocean-going steamships would be able to load and discharge in the heartland of the south-east Lancashire industrial area. The opening of the canal in 1894 dramatically reduced transport costs for industrialists and transformed an inland city into a major port. This history of its construction and operation is divided into themes. A selection of over 200 photographs covers the whole 36-mile length of the canal, from the Mersey Estuary, through Ellesmere Port and Runcorn, to the terminal docks in Salford. Included are sections on the construction period 1887-94, the early operating practices, major shipping companies, tug-boats, canal railways, special features, and the centenary. The vast majority of illustrations are previously unpublished photographs, many from official sources, charting the progress and development of the canal since its inception. The final chapter bring the story up to date with current plans as the canal moves into its second century of operation. This book will be of interest to local historians, industrial archaeologists, waterway enthusiasts, and ship-lovers everywhere." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - light waviness to book, minor rubbing.

HISTORY OF THE CANADIAN PACIFIC RAILWAY., Lamb, W. Kaye.
9 Lamb, W. Kaye. HISTORY OF THE CANADIAN PACIFIC RAILWAY.
New York Macmillan 1977 0025676601 / 9780025676602 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good- Good+
491 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). One of the 'Railroads of America' series. B&w photographs, maps. "In 1881 a company was formed to lay the 1,900 miles of railway that would connect Montreal and British Columbia in just five years. There were two separate and distinct sections. The first extended through the forbidding Laurentian Shield north of Lake Huron and Lake Superior, between Callander and Thunder Bay. The second spanned the 1,250 miles between Red River and Kamloops, starting with 850 miles of relatively easy going across the prairies, followed by 400 mountainous miles through the Rockies and on to the Pacific. On November 7, 1885, with a minimum of ceremony, the last spike in the track was driven at Craigellachie. There followed the years of expansion. The railroad was doing its job and now it ws the turn of ocean liners, Great Lakes steamers and finally, the airlines. Diversification, the prevailing pattern in the middle twentieth century, had been foreseen by the Canadian Pacific in the 1870s. Its original charter empowered it to own telegraph and telephone lines and to build wharves, docks, and grain elevators, and an early critic's remark that he 'did not know of anything they are not authorized to do' is still appropriate." Wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light wear on bottom edge of boards, shelf soiling on bottom of stext block. two very small corner bumps. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light rubbing, a few very small tears and tiny chips

11 Macfarlane, David. Foreword by Hon. Hilary M. Weston. AT THE OJIBWAY. (100 SUMMERS ON GEORGIAN BAY).
N.P. Nancy Lang 2006 0978040503 / 9780978040505 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
169 pp, oblong (9" H x 12 1/8" D). Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w photographs, reproductions. "They came by rail and by steamer, from Rochester, from Cleveland, from Pittsburgh, from Hamilton and Toronto. They came to an island retreat on the windswept shores of Georgian Bay to escape the summer heat and to enjoy 'beautiful scenery and bracing air'. And, of course, to fish. There, to meet them on the stone stairs leading to the gracious veranda, was Hamilton Davis, the enterprising American who built the Ojibway Hotel in 1906. One hundred years later, with its weathered shingles, its expansive dock, its stately tower, the Ojibway is still there - the hub of a remarkable summer community. It's the kind of place that elsewhere, often, has been allowed to disappear. Of the 110 such lodges built at the turn of the century in the Georgian Bay-Muskoka region, fewer than 10 remain. Its survival is miraculous, and now it stands - as witness to what has gone and to what, like a treasured regatta ribbon pinned to an old cottage rafter, has been saved from the passage of time. (The author) chronicles the story of this beloved hotel. Recapturing summers past, unearthing treasured stories from guests, staff and cottagers, he relates them with wit and immediacy. Macfarlane creates more than just a history of this hotel. He offers a glimpse into a way of life that is disappearing and tells the story of a community committed to preseving the focal point of its past. For all those who understand the beauty and bittersweet brevity of a northern summer, (this) is a book to be treasured." Minor rubbing on rear board. Dust jacket has soft curl at top and bottom edges of panels, minor rubbing.
