4 Ansell, Mike, Colonel Sir. Foreword By H.R.H. The Prince Philip. SOLDIER ON: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY.
London Peter Davies 1973 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good+ Inscribed By Author
180 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). **Inscribed on half title page: "G_____ A_____ Best wishes Mike Ansell Oct. 14th 1973". B&w plates. "In June, 1940, when Colonel Mike had just been awarded the D.S.O. and was the youngest Commanding Officer in the Army, disaster struck: he was blinded in a hail of bullets at St Valery. The way he has overcome this handicap, and other more heartbreaking losses, is the inspiring theme of this book. For Colonel Mike has never failed to 'soldier on' in the face of adversities that would have broken lesser men. Whether catching salmon on the Torridge in Devon, creating the beautiful garden at his home near Bideford, planning a new show-jumping course with his specially designed magnetic board, attending St Dunstan's reunions or sitting in his study typing this book, to everything he does Colonel Mike bring his own unique brand of enthusiasm and professionalism - just as he did before the war, when, for example, he organised the famous Trick Ride for his regiment, the 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards, and show-jumped for England. Chairman of the British Show-Jumping Association and of the British Horse Society for some twenty-five years and now President of the British Equestrian Federation, he has done more than any other single man to make Britain one of the leading equestrian nations in the world, and to stimulate the ever-growing interest in riding as a competitive and leisure sport." Publishers' promotional material laid-in. Scattered tiny foxing marks on top third of both boards and on edges of text bkock, light wear at corners. Dust jacket has bee price-clipped, heavy creases at top corner of rear flap-fold, tiny foxing marks on top inside edge, some light edge wear/wrinkling, small closed tear on front hinge, small repair at top edge - archivally taped.

" 'If there is no objection, I will take my Division tomorrow and go to Gettysburg.' With these words Major- General Henry Heth set in train the course of events culminating in the titanic clash around the small Pennsylvania town of Gettysburg. On 1 July two Confederate Corps swept towards this strategic crossroads as Federal troops fought a desper a t e d e l aying action. The men of the Army of Northern Virginia were the best in the Confederacy. Under Robert E. Lee they had whipped every Federal force sent against them, and they were confident this time would be no exception. As the firs t at ta c ks s we pt forward full of confidence they were met by a storm of fire. Judging from the determination of their bluecoated adversaries this was going to be no ordinary fight." "(This series) presents the military enthusiast with a new a ng le on th e m ajo r b attlefields of history. Supported by comprehensive organisation diagrams the forces involved are examined unit-by-unit, including the 'tooth' combat elements and the vital 'tail' support troops. The objectives of the operat ion ar e a nal ysed and thi s 'theory' contrasted with the realities of the battle itself." 6 Arpin, P.E., foreword. FINDING THE SUN'S TRUE BEARING. PRECOMPUTED TABLES.
Ottawa Civil Aviation Branch, Department of Transport Soft Cover Very Good
112 pp + blank pages for notes, oblong (7 15/16" H x 10 1/2" D). No date. Erratum sheet laid in. "From aviation's earliest days, pilots of aircraft have been conscious of the need for accurate directional information. The development of the magnetic and gyro compass has, for general purposes, kept pace with aviation needs in most areas of the world. Flight operations in Northern Canada, however, present problems which are unique by virtue of the position of the North Magnetic Pole. - - In response to a need for the provision of directional information simply and to within one degree the Flight Standards and Regulations Division of the Civil Aviation Branch has arranged the development of these tables from which the Sun's True Bearing can be extracted directly knowing date, correct Local Civil time (within reasonable limits) and approximate Latitude and Longitude. - - It is also significant to note that these Tables are not limited to Canada only, but include any areas of the earth north of 40 degrees North Latitude, and for all practical purposes will maintain usable accuracy for an indefinite period." From the Foreword. Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownwership marks. Exterior - small soiling mark on top of textblock, some very light rubbing/soiling on rear cover.

DIEPPE 1942: THE JUBILEE DISASTER., Atkin, Ronald.
7 Atkin, Ronald. DIEPPE 1942: THE JUBILEE DISASTER.
Macmillan, London, 1980, first edition.
306 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0333191870 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "At dawn on 19 August 1942, five thousand Allied soldiers landed at the French port of Dieppe in the first major test of the defence of the G erman-held coastline of Europe since Dunkirk. The codename given to the operation was 'Jubilee' and its aim was to capture Dieppe and the headlands which dominate the town, hold them for a few hours and provide the Allied war planners with t h e v i t a l information they needed about enemy preparedness for the Second Front demanded by the Russians to relieve their sorely-pressed armies in the East. In nine hours of carnage and horror 'Jubilee' became a disaster. A combination of ove r- ri g id p la nn ing, inadequate supporting firepower and - in the final hours before the raid - sheer bad luck, inflicted on the Allies one of their worst defeats in a war which was already going badly. British Commandos carried out the flank a tta cks a gai nst co ast al gun batteries which dominated the seaward approaches to Dieppe and one of these raids, led by Lord Lovat, was spectacularly successful. But the assault on the port itself and the beaches on either side of Dieppe, the t ask of t he Cana dian 2nd Div ision, was a disastrous and bloody failure....Ronald Atkin has pieced together the full story of that day at Dieppe from all sides - British, Canadian, German and French - and from sources which include official docu ment s and re ports and most graph ic of all, the reminiscences of the men of both sides who planned and fought in Operation 'Jubilee'. The result is a masterly account of one of the most extraordinary - and tragic - episodes of the Second World War." Mino r fi nger m ark o n fro nt fre e end paper, tiny fain stain on fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket has been price clipped, has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very light rubbing. Very Good+/V ery Go od

London Viking 2012 0670917559 / 9780670917556 Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
466 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, floor plans, map, family tree. "At 6 a.m. on 21 April 1940 John, the 9th Duke of Rutland, and one of Britain's wealthiest men, ended his days, virtually alone, lying on a makeshift bed in a dank, cramped suite of rooms in the servants' quarters of his own home, Belvoir Castle. For weeks, as his health deteriorated, his family, his servants - even the King's doctor - had pleaded with him to come out, but he had refused. After his death, his son and heir, Charles, the 10th Duke of Rutland, ordered that the rooms be locked up and they remained untouched for sixty years. What lay behind this extraordinary set of circumstances? (The author) unravels a complex and compelling tale of love, honour and betrayal, played out in the grand salons of Britain's stately homes at the turn of the twentieth century, and on the battlefields of the Western Front." The beachhead was a chaotic mess, with sheets of murderous lead raining down upon the pinned troops....Highly detailed and insightful, (this book) offers a fascinating look at the struggle from the point of view of the men who fought it. Based on interviews with the men of the fighti n g 2 9 t h a s well as unit battle histories, the book examines the opposing armies, including the field tactics, equipment and training of each. The author has included 30 specially prepared maps which follow the 29th Division through its final l ib e ra ti on o f t he village of St. Lo, a victory that proved forever the particular combination of qualities that made the American GI more than a match for any enemy." RHODESIA: THE ROAD TO REBELLION., Barber, James.
10 Barber, James. RHODESIA: THE ROAD TO REBELLION.
Oxford University Press / Institute of Race Relations, London, 1967, first edition.
338 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "As a result of the dramatic Unilateral Declaration of Independence by Ian Smith and his Cabinet in November 1965, Rhodesia is now the centre of an international crisis, a focal point in a rapidly changing scene. But the act should not be seen as an isolated incident; it is part of a political and constitutional pattern which has developed gradually, and of which the outstanding feature is the division between Europeans and Africans. In thi s careful and thorough study Mr. Barber traces the various strands which make up this pattern, analysing the origins of this tragically divided society and its relations with the rest of Southern Africa, and giving a detailed account of the politi c a l developments since 1960 which culminated in the U.D.I." THE DESERT GENERALS., Barnett, Correlli.
11 Barnett, Correlli. THE DESERT GENERALS.
William Kimber, London, 1960, second edition.
320 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "The first portrait is of Sir Richard O'Connor, who won the fantastic victories over Graziani's Italians in 1940. The author shows that th e credit for the daring and unorthodox planning is due to O'Connor and not to Wavell; he puts forward a convincing argument to show that Tripoli could have been taken - and the North African campaign ended - in February, 1941, if the Prime Mi n i s t e r had not diverted forces to Greece. Of Sir Alan Cunningham, first commander of 8th Army, there is a picture of imaginative insight. The author shows that the crisis in the 'Crusader' battle of November, 1941, was caused by twenty years o f ne gl ec t a nd traditionalism, although the brunt fell on Cunningham, then a sick man. In Sir Neil Ritchie, next 8th Army commander, the author sees personified the characteristics of the Establishment - rigidity, social charm and professiona l c on ser vat ism . H e shows how Ritchie was beaten in the summer battles of 1942 by the dynamism of German leadership. With 8th Army in danger of complete collapse, the C.-in-C., Sir Claude Auchinleck, took over direct command in order to try t o sa ve the Midd le E as t a nd its vital oil. In the next few weeks he won a great but never officially acknowledged victory in the First Battle of Alamein. The author believes that this was the true turning point of the war, making possible the ' Torch ' l andi ngs i n Fre nch Nor th Africa. Auchinleck's reward was dismissal - as, the author shows, a political scapegoat. Although Field-Marshal Montgomery has recounted his own story, there is another side to it, told here for the first tim e. Th e au thor discus ses th e pl ans f or Montgomery's first victory of Alam Halfa which had been made by Auchinleck and his officers; he submits that the Battle of Alamein was not impeccably handled, and that Rommel's escape afterwards was not o wing to rain , but to the hesita nt, ' broad front' pursuit - the very error of which Montgomery was to accuse Eisenhower in 1944." Previous owner's small bookplate and small light stain on front pastedown, light browning to edges of text block, minor w rinkli ng at top/bott om of sp ine, o ne pag e with tiny edge tear and crease. Dust jacket has wear/wrinkles/tiny chips at top/bottom of hinges and flap-folds, small surface paper loss at top of spine, light browning on spine and flap-fold s, two ed ge tear s with creases - old tap e repai r, one tiny edge tear, light wear on flap-folds. 336 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). Pictorial endpapers, b&w maps. "On a chill Easter Monday in 1917, with a blizzard blowing in their faces, the four divisions of the Canadian Corps in France did what neither the British nor the French armies had been able to do in more than two years of fighting. They seized and held the best-defended German bastion on the Western Front - a muddy scarp known as the Vimy Ridge. The French, who had lost 150,000 men trying to take the ridge, didn't believe it could be done. Nor did the Germans; even the British were skeptical. But the Canadians triumphed. They went over the top at dawn; by lunch time, most of the ridge was in their hands - at a cost of only ten thousand casualties. How could an army of civilians from a nation without a military tradition secure the first enduring Imperial victory in thirty-two months of warfare? The answer, as Pierre Berton makes vividly clear in his haunting account, was precisely that these men were civilians, with flexible minds unfettered by military rules." 158 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850520290 B&w photographs, reproductions, music to Regimental March. Errata sheet tipped in on half-title page. "Since their formation in the mid-eighteenth century the 43rd and 52nd Regim ents of Foot have had a variety of changes in title, achieving in 1908 the name by which they will always be remembered, that of the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, although the old cherished numbers, by which the regiments w e r e k n o w n before the Cardwell Reforms, have always b een unofficially used by the regular battalions. In 1803 they were the first regiments to become light infantry in Sir John Moore's Light Brigade, and achieved further fame in the Penins ul ar W ar as p ar t of Craufurd's Light Division. Perhaps the 52 nd's most famous success was at Waterloo, when, under Sir John Colborne's skilful handling, they made the famous charge which carried the day for the allies. With customary skill an d c our age suc cee din g generations in the Regiment lived up to their illustrious predecessors, particularly in the First and Second World Wars; their stand on the Somme in 1918 against the full weight of the German army, and their part in th e gl ider -bor ne l a ndin gs a t D- Da y are only two examples of the fighting skill which has made this regiment famous. Together with the 60th Rifles and the Rifle Brigade they are now part of the Royal Green Jackets - indeed a happy issue out o f the affl ictio n of po st wa r org anisa tio n." Toronto Dundurn Press 1997 1550022946 / 9781550022940 First Edition Soft Cover with Self Flaps Very Good+ Inscribed By Author
171 pp, 8vo (9" H). Inscribed by author on title page. B&w photographs. "A first-hand account of the experiences of a young Canadian airwoman who served both in Canada and on overseas duty, this series of 150 letters brings home the day-to-day immediacy of life in uniform during the Second World War. Moments of hilarity interspersed with impatience and frustration are recorded verbatim, along with an underlying sense of urgency about winning a war that hung in the balance for too long. Written to the Dean of Women at Macdonald College in Ste. Anne de Bellevue, Mary Buch's letters lay untouched for over fifty years after her return to Canada from England in 1945. Today they serve as a looking-glass into the War Years that is tinged with the freshness of youthful spontaneity and the promise of a brighter tomorrow. Carolyn Gossage has interwoven colourful contextual sidebars that provide today's readers with an overview of the times and circumstances that have become increasingly elusive in the intervening years." "They were feared, hated and respected as one of the premier divisions of the Waffen SS, wearing the sinister silver insignia of the Death's Head on the collar of their black uniforms, to signify 'SS Totenkopf Division'. One of the most powerful and destructive military forces in history, many in its ranks began their training not in military academies but as concentration camp guards. Their brutal architect was Alsatian-born former psychiatric-clinic inmate Theodor Eike, who rose to become the ruthless, indomitable commander of the 3rd SS Panzer Division Totenkopf. In the early days of the war in Russia, the Division covered itself with glory for Hitler as a cruel, fearless technician of war. In defeat, however, the men of Totenkopf crashed to shame and ignominy - leaving behind a legacy of loathing unique in the annals of the battlefield."
