160 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "Why did the airship R101 crash on her voyage to India? How did the great Australian pioneer aviatior, Charles Kingsford-Smith, leave such a trail of death behind him when he disappared in 'Lady Southern Cross' in 1935? How did the pilots of the Fairey Postal Mono-plane in 1929 know that they were going to die? Why did so many of the first women who tried to emulate Lindbergh's solo flight across the Atlantic disappear in mysterious circumstances? What was the jinx that befell Stratocruiser propellers in the 1950s, and was it a coincidence that two Stratocruiser captains met in mid-Atlantic on Christmas Day 1957? What was the strange link between the Comet take-off accidents and the Comets that exploded in mid-air? Many flying mysteries of the past have since been explained by the advance of technology, but many remain, particularly those connected to time, coincidence and precognition of events. None of the aircraft disasters described in this book, which have taken place this century in uncertain and even mysterious circumstances, have ever been fully eplained." LAKONIA., Bond, Geoffrey.
6 Bond, Geoffrey. LAKONIA.
Oldbourne, London, 1966, first edition.
200 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, frontispiece. "During the evening of 19 December 1963 the twin-screw Motor Ship 'Lakonia' slid through the grey waters of the Solent, bound for sunshine and warmer seas. Her hull and superstructure gleamed like 'a newly iced Christmas cake, for she had been recently overhauled and completely redecorated'. (651) passengers were aboard the liner for her Christmas cruise --- The 'Lakonia' began to burn on Sunday, 22 Decem b e r . Four days later she was a pitiful, smoke-grimed wreck, wallowing at the mercy of the waves. On Sunday, 29 December - just a week after the initial diaster - she slid beneath the waters of the North Atlantic to her last resting-place. (Th is ) is t he story of unfortunate, originally minor circumstances, slowly building up until they finally overwhelmed the ship, her crew and passengers. But the pattern of crew and passenger heroism is at least as great as that of any perhaps more dra ma tic di saster. Reluctant to leave the ship, the crew - and many passengers - tried desperately to overcome events and save her. There was no panic - from first to last. Air-sea-rescue, radio, telephone, and computers went into action to s ave tho se i n pe ril on the sea - and it was the first time that the system of A.M.V.E.R. (Atlantic Merchant Vessel Emergency Report), had been used in any major shipping disaster. Ships of all nationalities sped towards the stricken liner. The B riti sh f reigh ter ' Montcalm', the Argentine 'Salta', the Pakistani 'Mehi' - and then there was the ship that passed 'Lakonia' by in her hour of need ---. (This) is a graphic account of the strength and bravery of ordinary persons under threat of deat h. I t is a n open , objective and factual reconstruction of what happened." "In this carefully structured explanatory volume, the author charts the history of the defence of Britain and the threats it has faced, befo re discussing the constituents of home defence policy, from the role of the armed forces, reservist units, police and local government, to the warning and monitory systems available, the means by which key points would be protected and the t r a i n i n g undertaken by those involved to maintain a state of readiness. As we enter an era where many previously perceived threats are thought to be reducing, the need for vigilance and preparation has not yet been removed. Whether, as has b ee n pr op os ed , f uture home defence practices become interwoven with an all hazards approach to the subject - where defence facilities could switch to non military emergencies and disasters - or the status quo is maintained, the protection of th e c ou ntr y a nd its p eo ple should be studied outside the boundaries of political debate and beyond biased viewpoints. This volume will benefit reasoned discussion and advance knowledge of this crucial subject." Very light wrinkling at top /bot tom of spin e, s lig ht w avi nes s to fore-edge of textblock. THE RIDDLE OF THE TITANIC., Gardiner, Robin and Van der Vat, Dan.
9 Gardiner, Robin and Van der Vat, Dan. THE RIDDLE OF THE TITANIC.
Weidenfeld and Nicolson, London, 1995, first edition.
312 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0297815288 Pictorial endpapers, b&w plates. "Why did Captain Smith accelerate in uniquely treacherous weather towards an exceptionally dangerous ice-field of which he had been warned many times? In t he disaster that followed more than 1,500 people died while barely 700 were saved. This book lays bare as no other the full scope of Smith's astonishing accident record and explores his motives - and the pressures on him - anew. W hat caused the hol e near the bow? The notorious iceberg cracked the plates for 300 feet along the ship's side, but the hole looks more like an explosion. Why is the position of the wreck - pinpointed by the latest technology - irreconcilabl e w i t h the Titanic's SOS calls? The authors conclude that the apparently ruthless American disaster hearings covered up the role of the ship's true owner, the arch-capitalist J.Pierpont Morgan; that the apparently dispassionate British enquiry , d om in at ed by an insider-deal ing Attorney-General, whitewashed a complacent government; and that White Star covered up its own gross negligence by bribing key witnesses. And what of the wreck itself? Here the mystery deepens. When Dr Rober t Ba lla rd - w ho first located the Ti tanic in 1895 - explored the wreck a year later he found the bulkhead not shown on any plans. The most diligent searches have since failed to trace the imposing stern nameplate with its embossed letters eight ee n i nche s h igh. T he authors have gone so far as to explore the breathtaking idea that the Titanic was replaced by her sister-ship, the seriously damaged Olympic, in a plot to recover the huge losses she ran up. The results are tantalising." T hree heav y bu mps a t to p of boards at spine, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light water mark at fore-edge of rear board. Dust jacket has moderate wrinkling at top of spine and hinges, light water mark on inside of rear flap-fold. Good+/ Very Good -

Fighting uphill battles against 'the powers that be', Gibbs remained utterly dedicated to the airborne torpedoes as a weapon of war against shipping, and succeeded in changing not only tactical but also strategic policy - very rare indeed for a junior officer. "....looks back at some of the mishaps and disasters involving ships that sailed the Great Lakes long ago. Many of these incidents happened during the fierce storms of autumn, others were the result of horrific fires, groundings, collisions or sinkings. Sudden storms proved deadly for some ships, driving them onto shore where helpless onlookers watched or ca tching them in the open lake where they sank without a trace, taking the entire crew to their deaths. Each of the Great Lakes has its own history and particular reputation for danger to shipping. Each of them has shoal areas littered with w r e c k s a nd also holds undiscovered 'graveyards' in deeper waters where ships have gone down. Sport divers and history buffs have located some of these long-lost wrecks, while many remain elusive. A few of the Great Lakes ships noted in this b oo k le ft t h e inland seas to work in saltwater. During the war years many were pressed into service and successfully aided the war effort - some returned, while others became the victims of enemy action or casualties of the elements. Sometim es, to o, th e i nci de nt s described were minor mishaps with no loss of life, but all these stories record the accidents and the challenges that faced the brave men and women who sailed the Great Lakes." "This is the first comprehensive account of every peacetime submarine disaster from 1774 to the present day. It is, however, very far from being just a list of what sunk, where, when and why, for the author examines most of the important sinkings in considerable detail, analysing what went wrong and describing the attempts made at rescuing the crew and/or the vessel. In this way he traces t he development of the submarine from the earliest experimental submersibles of the late eighteenth century down to the nuclear-powered monsters of today, describing in parallel the developments of underwater rescue operations and survival tec h n i q u e s ....The appendices include the most comprehensive and accurate list of submarine disasters ever printed, updated to June 1985, in the compilation of which the author has had the co-operation of the US, French, Italian, Danish and Japan es e Na vi es , as well as that of the RN Submarine Museum and the German 'U-Boot Archiv'." 362 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). "(G)limpses the world of actors as experienced by Canadian performers. In their own words, more than two hundred actors share shocking, funny, terrifying, sometimes poignant stories of adventures, mishaps, gaffes, disasters, and moments of joy they have known in the course of their working lives on and off stage. The collection of over 450 stories begins with tales of 'The Audition' and early performing experiences of some familiers faces, such as Wayne and Schuster, William Shatner, Robert Goulet, and Martin Short. It chronicles life on tour from Russia to the Ozarks to above the Arctic circle. It elucidates the trials of props, sets, and wardrobe that refuse to function as intended, the agonies of surviving the unexpected, whether it be a four-legged cast member going into labour, an actor who has somehow forgotten an entrance, a sudden on-stage bout with very real food poisoning, or the often hilarious contributions from members of the audience." 430 pp, 9 1/2" H. "(A) chronicle of shipping disasters during the last great war of the age of sail, based almost exclusively on the reporting of the time. Listed are some fifteen hundred ships, vessels naval and mercantile, of many nations whose tribulations were covered in the national and local newspapers as well as the specialist press like the 'Naval Chronicle'. These reports run the whole gamut of maritime tragedies - the bizarre, curious and quirky, as well as the familiar - and in all their inconsequential detail. Through the medium of the reporting of the time, what is here presented is a truly contemporary perspective of events, in itself a fascinating revelation of the mores and attitutudes of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Given the sheer number of craft lost at sea, it cannot be entirely exhaustive, but no other book contains so much non-technical information on the maritime disasters of the period 1793-1815." Harmondsworth Viking 1984 0670800007 / 9780670800001 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
337 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w maps, photographs. "In March 1954 an army of 30,000 men sailed from Portsmouth to the Crimea to defend the crumbling Turkish empire against invasion by Russia. Led by Lord Raglan, a veteran of Waterloo but, after forty years, out of touch with the realities of warfare, they embarked for an unknown country to defend a cause few understood or even cared about. Nevertheless enthusiasm and confidence were high among the men of what 'The Times' described as 'the finest army that has ever left these shores'. The euphoria was short-lived and the campaign quickly degenerated into a series of humiliating military disasters caused largely by incompetence at the highest level, bitter personal rivalries among the divisional commanders, and criminal inadequacies of transport, clothing and medical supplies. A scapegoat had to be found if the British Government was to survive, and it was Lord Raglan who bore the brunt of the virulent anti-war campaign mounted by the newspapers. Misunderstood and maligned by his contemporaries, his reputation blackened for posterity, Lord Raglan died a broken man only weeks before the French finally defeated the Russians at Malakoff, with little help from their demoralized British allies. In this fair, scholarly and vividly written account of the confused tragedy of the Crimea, Christopher Hibbert has done much to redeem the reputation of a sensitive and courageous man who simply lacked the necessary qualities of leadership and intellect to extricate his army with honour from an ill-conceived and bloody campaign. Drawing on contemporary letters, papers, reports and diaries, the author strongly suggests that the chaos of the Crimea was the result, not of one man's neglect, but of a whole nation's folly." 2" split at top of gutter between index pages 336/337, one tiny corner bump. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling, light rubbing - mainly on rear panel, two wrinkles in laminate down front cover.

19 Hugill, Stan. SONGS OF THE SEA: THE TALES AND TUNES OF SAILORS AND SAILING SHIPS.
McGraw-Hill, Maidenhead, 1977.
198 pp, small 4to (10" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0070311382 Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour with reproductions, photographs, musical notation. "Life was short, brutal, lonely and joyless for the 'jolly tar', except for strong dr ink, women - and the solace of song. So he sang: short, rhythmic, onomatopoeic chants to time his backbreaking work at capstan and halyard, the famous 'shanties'. Or longer, ribald or forlorn ditties for idle moments, called 'forebitters' a f t e r t h e metal bollards on the fo'c's'lehead. He sang bravura songs when outward bound; yearning, sexier songs for the homeward reach; warning songs of pirates, press gangs, and faithless maidens; and songs of admiration for the likes of s u ch s ai lo rs as ' Bold MacCarteney'....And here they are, the authentic words and music of more than a hundred sea songs and chants in half a dozen languages. Some are as old as the mists of time, some as new as the great steel-hulled four-ma st ers in th e n itr a te run s of the 1890s....To describe and interpret that history, the book begins with an illustrated look at the sailors' varied machines: ships, brigs, barks, schooners, sloops and so on - and their marvelously complex rigg ing s. Ther e is a h andy g los sary of terms and vernacular, and many clear explanations of customs and language, from the above-mentioned forebitters to the gruesome 'Nelson's Blood' and the ever-present 'Armstrong's Patent' - the muscle power that ma de ev eryth ing g o. T he sail or's skills, dress, pay, superstitions, drink, food - and loves - are clearly described and pictured. There are anecdotes galore: stories of shanghaiing and mutiny, shipwreck and cannabilism, storms and trop ical isle s. Ev ery so ng is transl ate d int o Eng lish (and cleaned up a bit) where necessary, and accompanied by a brief history of its origins and its travels from country to country.
