5 Birney, Earle. DOWN THE LONG TABLE.
Toronto McClelland and Stewart 1955 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Signed by Author
298 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H). Signed and dated by author on title page: "Earle Birney 22 Oct 1967 Toronto". "Readers who experienced the years of the great depression, in this country or elsewhere, will find their memories painfully and perhaps fruitfully stirred; younger readers will doubtless gain new understanding of the struggles, miseries and frustrations of those heartbreaking times that preceded the excitement and activity of war. Students of politics and the social scene should find much to interest them in the story of Communist, Trotskyist and other organizations that formed and operated in Canada during the long years of poverty, unemployment and unrest. Its blend of sympathy, irony and humour, and its frank discussions of so many questions which are close to us all earn for this compelling novel a rightful place beside the major novels of this decade." Previous owner's name in pen at top of front free endpaper, very light edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light browning to edges of text block, minor soiling mark on bottom of edge block. Dust jacket has moderate browning on spine and light browning at edges, light edge wear - includes a few tiny chips, light rubbing/soiling.

427 pp, 8vo (9 1/4" H). "Through war, depression, and social upheaval, the first half of the twentieth century was a period of unprecedented turbulence in Canada. In this lively and perhaps contentious survey, (the authors) explore the political and economic forces that shaped this era of change. Beginning at the turn of the century, they consider the status of Canada in the empire and the world, the burgeoning growth of its economy, and the development of social and labour problems, up to the eruption of war in 1914. They discuss the political currents running through Canada during two wars, the interwar economic boom and depression, and the plans for post-war reconstruction, and assess the impact of these and other events on Canada's political, economic, social, and cultural institutions." BELLEVILLE: A POPULAR HISTORY., Boyce, Gerry.
7 Boyce, Gerry. BELLEVILLE: A POPULAR HISTORY.
Toronto Natural Heritage / Dundurn 2008 1550028634 / 9781550028638 First Edition Soft Cover Fine
310 pp, square large 8vo (9" x 9"). B&w photographs, reproductions, maps. "(A) treasure trove of stories - 'glorious and not-so-glorious' - embodying the history of the city of Belleville (Ontario) and its beautiful surroundings. Gerry Boyce, the dean of the area's historians, has done a masterful job of pulling together the best of Belleville's storied past, episode by episode, decade by decade: here one learns about the Native roots of the place, its debatable 'discovery' by Champlain, its hot-headed pre-Confederation politics, its involvement in Spiritualism in the 1850s and the spread of prostitution in the Victorian 1870s. Moving forward from the days of Susanna Moodie and Mackenzie Bowell, it provides an entertaining and probing stroll through the past 110 years, reminding readers of such national events as the sensational 1959 victory by the Belleville MacFarlands over the Russians at the World Amateur Hockey Championship in Prague; and then, less well known, the financially crippling news of secret payments made to the players. Gerry Boyce (reminds) us that our history, be it local or national, is much more lively and intriguing than we often realize." Michael Peterman . Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - clean and bright.

8 Brockhouse, Robert. THE ROYAL ALEXANDRA THEATRE: A CELEBRATION OF 100 YEARS.
Toronto McArthur 2007 155278648X / 9781552786482 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+ Edward Burtynsky, photographer.
346 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated in colour, b&w and sepiatone with photographs/reproductions. "It was one of those grand civic gestures so loved by the aristocracy of the Gilded Age: a gift to Toronto meant to call the world's attention to its blossoming as a great city. The giver was Cawthra Mulock, 'the boy millionaire', one of the wealthiest men in Canada. The gift was the Royal Alexandra, a magnificent new theatre built - with no regard to cost - to equal the most splendid houses of London, Paris and New York. It was to be the lodestar of North American theatres, attracting the finest performers and the very best in dramatic art to a city that still smarted under the nickname 'Hogtown'. If Cawthra Mulock had known what obstacles lay in the way, he might never have broken ground. He could not have foreseen the cut-throat rivals who would seek to bankrupt him; nor the two World Wars; nor the coming of the movies, radio and television; nor the Great Depression that would close every other theatre in the country. This book tells the story of a Canadian national landmark and beloved Toronto institution, and of the remarkable, dogged and devoted champions - from Mulock to Mirvish - who have kept it alive, thriving and triumphant over 100 years." Small crease at top edge of pages 193 to 204., light waviness to edges og text block, very light wrinking at bottom of spine. Dust jacket very minor edge wrinkling, very minor rubbing, very soft wrinkle on rear panel.

438 pp, 9 1/4" H. Inscribed on title page: "Harold H. Peacock: / With warm regards and appreciation / for a long friendship / Duncan C. Campbell / April 1985." B&w photographs. "In 1928, the year in which Alcan began its own journey, the fledgling company's prospects were not bright, and within four years they had dimmed still further thanks to the Great Depression's deadly stranglehold. Alcan had, however, some gilt-edged assets: its employees, men and women of talent, loyalty and above all industry, led by a team cast from the same mold and headed by that brilliant entrepreneur-scholar, Edward K. Davis. (This) is the story of these people and their company. Through a blend of skill, far sightedness, luck and plain hard work they made Alcan what it is today: a world leader in the aluminum industry. From its modest birth through its precarious infancy they nurtured its growth into the giant Canadian multinational enterprise now recognized around the world, thereby realizing that dream of a a global mission which had inspired its founders." 11 Cazort, Mimi, edited and with introduction by. Foreword By Dr. Rene Pomerleau. (Henry Alexander Carmichael Jackson.) MR JACKSON'S MUSHROOMS.
Ottawa National Gallery of Canada 1979 088884364X / 9780888843647 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good Henry Alexander Carmichael Jackson.
161 pp, 13" H. "(T)he record of a Canadian naturalist and artist, Henry Jackson, elder brother of A.Y. Jackson. It is also his record of changes, both social and environmental, that took place in Montreal and the Quebec countryside during the Depression, the Second World War, and the period immediately following. It is finally a testament to the rich inner recources of a man who, with very little money and no formal education, celebrated the abundance and variety of the natural world around him. The forty-two full-colour plates, forty reproduced actual size, reveal Jackson's extraordinary eye for detail and total command of technique. His masterful colouring and delicacy of touch fully transcend the original documentary purposes of his works. The detailed notebooks carefully kept from 1927 to 1954 richly illustrate not only Jackson's genuine, almost escapist, love of nature, but also his deep affection for people, especially the countryfolk, among whom he lived and worked." Very small area of color loss on rear board cloth. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling, one tiny dent on rear flap-fold, a few tiny edge tears.

Burlington, Ontario Windsor Publications 1988 0897812573 / 9780897812573 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
184 pp, 11 1/4" H. B&w and colour photographs, reproductions. "(The authors) describe Manitoba's beginnings as a fur trade empire under the Hudson's Bay Company. They depict the development of the province's resources and potential as a national priority when, in 1870, a very small Province of Manitoba was created to spearhead the development of a western agrarian empire. Working within a changing social and economic climate, entrepreneurs struggled to establish Winnipeg as the West's premier city, and situated that city as the hub of a transportation and distribution network that supported the province's heartland. Ranging forward, the authors' accounting of the province's role in agriculture, industry, hydro, mining, and tourism is given within the context of national and international forces. Roger Newman has prepared histories of selected Manitoba businesses and organizations whose contributions to the development of the Keystone Province should not go unrecorded." Minor wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling.

177 pp, 11 1/4" H. "Saskatoon began as a vision of the Temperance Colonization Society. Its members formulated a scheme for a colony in the West where a way of life free from the evils of alcohol might be fostered. Early in the spring of 1882, an advance party travelled by rail and wagon to examine their grant of land and to choose the administrative site for the settlement. By the beginning of the twentieth century, the temperance ideals had become secondary to boosterism. By 1905 discussions were underway to amalgamate the original Nutana settlement with 'Saskatoon' and Riversdale on the west side of the river. Their combined population of 4,500 allowed Saskatoon a charter under city status in 1906. By 1908 the city was served by three railway companies and the 'Hub City' station was one of the busiest in the West. (This book) brings the story of the city to life through nearly 300 photographs. It registers changes through two world wars, during the periods of prosperity and recession, into the optimism of the fifties and sixties and the more speculative expansion of the seventies." Christmas gift inscription in ink on front free endpaper, book is lightly cocked, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor glue residue at top edge of rear endpapers. It was also an age in which Mennonite history was marked by fragmentation even in their own communities. During this twenty-year timespan the battle for separate schooling led to a significant emigration of Canadian Mennonites to Latin America, while another struggle was waged with our immigration authorities to allow the entry of Russian Mennonites into Canada. The book also covers the impact of the Depression on the Mennonites and their efforts to preserve their culture and racial identity.
