THE INVASION OF CANADA, 1812-1813., Berton, Pierre.
5 Berton, Pierre. THE INVASION OF CANADA, 1812-1813.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1980 0771012357 / 9780771012358 Limited First Edition, Specially Bound. Hard Cover Near Fine Tom McNeely, endpapers.
363 pp, 9 3/4" H. Pictorial endpapers, maps/battle plans. Blue (faux?) leather spine with gilt lettering & decoration, gray boards with blue decoration on front board. "This first edition copy - is one of a limited number (unspecified) which have been specially bound and slipcased" from the copyright page. " To America's leaders in 1812, an invasion of Canada seemed the best way to bloody John Bull's nose. It would, as Thomas Jefferson confidently predicted, be 'a mere matter of marching'. How could a nation of eight million fail to subdue a struggling colony of 300,000? Yet, when the campaign of 1812 ended on the bloody banks of the River Raisin, the only Americans left on Canadian soil were prisoners of war. Three American armies had been forced to surrender, and the British were in control of all of Michigan Territory and much of Indiana and Ohio. Drawing on personal memoirs and diaries as well as official dispatches, the author has been able to get inside the characters of the men who fought the war - the common soldier as well as the generals. (C)owards and heroes, flawed generals and bumbling bureaucrats, traitors, loyalists, war profiteers, military incompetents and geniuses. (T)he War of 1812, or more properly the myth of the war, served to give the new settlers (of Upper Canada) a sense of community and set them on a different course from that of their neighbours. The Canadian way of life, says Berton, has its roots in the invasion of Canada." Tiny area of glue residue at the edge of the rear board leather. Slipcase has a tiny edge scuff on rear panel, a few very small minor soiling marks on front panel.

7 Bowyer, Chaz. BOMBER BARONS.
Barnsley, South Yorkshire Leo Cooper 2001 085052802X / 9780850528022 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
222 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs. "By the end of the Second World War, a grim total of 55,000 air crew of Bomber Command has lost their lives. This figure comprised no less than seventy per cent of RAF fatalities. Yet, unlike their more glamorous fighter pilot colleagues, very few bomber pilots or crewmen were familiar household names to the general public. However, within the ranks of the RAF itself, some individuals stood out gaining high reputations for their courage and leadership, a respect achieved regardless of the decorations they had won or the number of sorties flown. These were the 'Bomber Barons'. In this authoritative book, (the author) chooses a selection of these men. Some like Leonard Cheshire, Guy Gibson and Hughie Edwards, are today well known but others such as Nick Knilans, Syd Clayton and Jo Lancaster, are familiar only to those 'in the know'. For each, the author details their careers and relates episodes that reflect the qualities that made them outstanding. At the same time, the reader learns of the unfolding dramatic development of Bomber Command from the comparatively uncoordinated, non-cohesive raids of the early part of the war to the highly-trained and deadly offensive weapon it became under Sir Arthur Harris, from 1942 AOC-in-C of Bomber Command, and the Greatest Baron of them all." Small very light stain in margin of page 16. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, a few very tiny dints, very minor rubbing.

9 Crumb, R. (Robert Dennis) THE BOOK OF GENESIS.
New York W.W. Norton 2009 0393061027 / 9780393061024 4th Printing Hard Cover Fine Very Good+ R. Crumb.
Unpaginated, 11 1/8" H. "Envisioning the first book of the Bible like no one before him, R. Crumb, the legendary illustrator, retells the story of Genesis in a profoundly honest and deeply moving way. Originally thinking that he would do a takeoff of Adam and Eve, Crumb became so fascinated with the Bible's language, 'a text so great and so strange that it lends itself readily to graphic depictions', that he decided instead to do a literal interpretation assembled primarily from the translations of Robert Alter and the King James Version. Now readers of every persuasion - Crumb fans, comic book lovers, and believers - can gain astonishing new insights from these harrowing, tragic and even juicy stories." Profusely illustrated in b&w comic strip fashion at an "adult" level, with an Introduction and Commentary by Crumb. Dust jacket has some very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top edge.

THE SPIRITUAL MANDELA: FAITH AND RELIGION IN THE LIFE OF NELSON MANDELA., Cruywagen, Dennis. (Nelson Mandela.)
10 Cruywagen, Dennis. (Nelson Mandela.) THE SPIRITUAL MANDELA: FAITH AND RELIGION IN THE LIFE OF NELSON MANDELA.
Watertown, MA Imagine 2018 1623545307 / 9781623545307 First American Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
224 pp, 9 1/4" H. "Nelson Mandela revealed nothing about his personal religious beliefs in his writings or in his public pronouncements. He purposely avoided discussing them in his autobiography for political reasons, but those who were closest to him knew he held Christian views. At Mandela's request, the final components of his funeral followed the Methodist service. 'The Spiritual Mandela' explores the ways in which Nelson Mandela balanced Christianity with traditional African beliefs and with his political views, and how he reconciled his faith with the fact that religion had often been used as a tool to oppress his people. (The author) traces the spiritual aspects of Mandela's life from his youth in a Thembu village, to his education at Wesleyan and Methodist mission schools, to his time as an activist, his incarceration on Robben Island, and the years thereafter." A few very tiny dents on bottom edge of boards. Dust jacket has minor edge wear/wrinkling, minor rubbing.

640 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, tables. "(1920-1940) was a critical period when the Mennonites' survival in Canada was under a variety of external threats. It was also an age in which Mennonite history was marked by fragmentation even in their own communities. During this twenty-year timespan the battle for separate schooling led to a significant emigration of Canadian Mennonites to Latin America, while another struggle was waged with our immigration authorities to allow the entry of Russian Mennonites into Canada. The book also covers the impact of the Depression on the Mennonites and their efforts to preserve their culture and racial identity. The book ends with the response of the Mennonites to the outbreak of the Second World War." Montreal McGill - Queen's University Press 1979 0773503218 / 9780773503212 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good
246 pp, 9 3/8" H. Dark blue boards with lighter blue and white lettering on spine and front board - no dust jacket (as issued). Map. "(T)he first full account of a major social and political movement of the interwar years in Canada: the campaign for 'Maritime Rights' which erupted in the Atlantic provinces after World War I. (T)races the history of the movement from its origins in the decline in relative status and influence of the Maritimes that accompanied the rise of the West and the growing dominance of the Central Canadian metropolises. Maritimers saw their political influence reduced, the underpinnings of their economy - especially in the critical areas of tariffs, freight rates, and subsidies - whittled away, and Canada defined in terms that seemed to exclude them. Adopting a strategy characteristic of the progressive movements of the period, they attempted through organization and agitation to restore their position. Farmers, fishermen, manufacturers, and organized labour articulated their demands, through the provincial press, boards of trade, union locals, educational conferences, and mass delegations to Ottawa. Although their efforts were largely defeated by the conflicting interests of stronger regions, and by the King government's adroitness in defusing protest through a policy of study and delay, the author believes that the aroused Maritimers had succeeded in establishing their difficulties in the public's mind as a national problem." Light edge wear, tear at top of last index page archivally taped, light wrinkling on page leaf 123/124.

"(Describes) the deveopment and careers of the last of the fighting biplanes, the little Gloster Gladiator, which carried something of the First World War into that second epic struggle; that indomitable trio of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps fighters, the Wildcat, Hellcat and Corsair, which destroyed the myth of Japanese aerial invincibility founded by the Zero-Sen; the fighter versions of the Junkers Ju 88 whose nocturnal depredations in the R.A.F.'s bomber stream over the Third Reich were so impressive at one period of the War that the abandoning of large-scale night attacks on German targets was seriously considered; the highly manoeuvrable Macchi C.202 Folgore with its beautifully co-ordianted controls - a pilot's aeroplane in every respect; the Japanese Army's equivalent of the Zero-Sen, the Nakamima Ki.43 Hayabusa, and its successor, the Ki.84 Hayate which could out-climb and out-manoeuvre the most advanced versions of the Mustang and Thunderbolt; Heinkel's superlative He 219 night fighter which, but for ministerial muddle and confusion, would have provided the Allies with some serious headaches. These and many other fighters, both successful and unsuccessful, but all 'famous', are surveyed with hundreds of rare photographs, highly detailed full-page tone drawings by Peter Endsleigh Castle, and comparative side views of the many variants of each aircraft by Dennis I. HANCOCK., Hancock, Freddie and Nathan, David.
19 Hancock, Freddie and Nathan, David. HANCOCK.
Kimber, London, 1969.
191 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs. "(Tony Hancock) led a life fragmented by laughter and despair as he ceaselessly sought an unattainable truth in comedy until it ended in a dreary room in Australia with one final drink, one last handful of pills. But before that happened he created more laughter for more people than any other man of his generation. The search for the truth about this extraordinarily complex clown involves drawing on the memories and perceptions of writers like Alan Simpson and Ray Galton, who, in a sense, hewed the Half Hour Hancock out of the whole man, J.B. Priestley who put him, thinly disguised, into a novel, Phillip Oakes, who wrote him a screenplay, and Denis Norden who w rote material he convulsed audiences with for years. There are, too, the writer/performers like John Osborne, Spike Milligan and Eric Sykes, the comedians who knew him or worked with him like Harry Secombe, Joan Turner, Kenneth Williams and Grah a m Stark; showman Bernard Delfont; actress Sylvia Syms, his radio and television directors Dennis Main Wilson and Duncan Wood and scores of others of lesser fame but crucial importance in Hancock's life." Slight fading at top edge of spine, light w ri n kling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wear/wrinkling, a few very small closed tears, minor rubbing, slight fading to spine color.
