Only Skyla, the witch-girl, was left alive - at the mercy of her own rampant magic and a clan of vengeful enemies. The Dark Elves had triumphed. Old Eyjarr took the discouraging news calmly. Hadn't he seen defeat before, in other lives, in strand after strand of the Web of Life? But he knew that if he could thwart the curse of the Dark Elves even once, the infernal curse would finally disappear from all the strands, for all time. The trick, Eyjarr assured his astonished pupil, would be to learn from their mistakes - and to search again for the one, improbable strand where a couple of clever wizards could cheat an implacable fate...." "Landover was a genuine magic kingdom, with fairy folk and wizardry, just as the advertisement had promised. But after he purchased it, Ben Holiday (former Chicago lawyer) learned that there were a few details the ad had failed to mention. The kingdom was a ruin. The Barons refused to recognize a king, and the peasants were without hope. A dragon was laying waste the countryside, while an evil witch plotted to destroy everything. Ben's only followers were the incompetent Court Magician; Abernathy, the talking dog who served as Court Scribe; and the lovely Willow - but she had a habit of putting down roots in the moonlight and turning into a tree. The Paladin, legendary champion of the Kings of Landover, seemed to be only a myth and an empty suit of armor - ." 9 Castaneda, Carlos. Foreword by Walter Goldschmidt. THE TEACHINGS OF DON JUAN: A YAQUI WAY OF KNOWLEDGE.

288 pp, 8 1/2" H. Complete number string beginning with 1, although first printed by the University of California Press in 1968. "(F)irst introduces to the reader the elusive, magical, powerful, haunting and perplexing person of Don Juan, the Yaqui brujo, or sorcerer, whose apprentice Castaneda becomes. Their relationship - in which a reluctant and demanding Don Juan instructs Castaneda in the disciplines of becoming a 'man of knowledge' by means of a series of mystical experiences and deceptively simple parables - has been described (by Time magazine) as 'one of the most fortunate literary encounters since Boswell was introduced to Dr. Johnston.' (This book) is nothing less than a revlation, a startling and illuminating journey into a world of 'nonordinary reality' that is not just the record of a remarkable and unprecedented inititation, but a glimpse of a new way of spiritual knowledge, comparable in its complexity, its subtle perceptions of human nature, its pragmatic system of ethics, to the great religions of the East - yet rooted in the forgotten culture of (North America). Above all, (it) cannot fail to leave the reader with the strongest impression of the nobility, depth and authority of Don Juan and his teachings." 10 Cremony, John C. LIFE AMONG THE APACHES.
New York Indian Head Books 1991 0880296526 / 9780880296526 Facsimile Reprint. Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
322 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). Facsimile reprint of 1868 edition. From the Introduction: "We have never striven to make ourselves intelligently acquainted with (the various tribes occupying the vast region which extends from the Colorado river on the west, to the settlements of Texas on the east, and from Taos in New Mexico to Durango in the Mexican Republic). Nearly all that relates to them is quite as uncertain and indefinite to our comprehension as that which obtains in the center of Africa. Those who were best informed on the matter, and had given it the closest attention, were, at the time - most unfortunately - the least capable of imparting their information; while those who were ignorant of the subject have been the most forward to give the results of their fragmentary gleanings. If this volume shall have the effect of bettering our present deplorable Indian policy, by letting in some light, it will accomplish the author's object." The author was "Interpreter to the U.S. Boundary Commission, under the Hon. John R. Bartlett, in 1849, '50 and '51, and late Major of California Volunteer Cavalry, operating in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Western Arkansas." Dust jacket has a few areas of very minor edge wrinkling.
